With Henry Cavill no longer the DC Extended Universe's Superman, the spotlight is instead being turned to Supergirl. That movie is said to be a priority for Warner Bros. and as the hunt for a filmmaker gets underway, we may now have an idea about who the iconic superhero will be squaring off with.

According to a source that's been reliable quite a few times in the past, Brainiac will be Supergirl's big bad, something which definitely makes some sense given the history between the two characters.

It's fair to say that the vast majority of fans would prefer to see Superman do battle with Brainiac but this is the next best thing and there's definitely a lot of potential for the villain on screen, something which Krypton made evident not too long ago. Regardless, Supergirl is a great character and seeing her square off with the iconic bad guy promises to be a lot of fun if the source material is any indication.

Nothing is set in stone right now, of course, but be sure to let us know your thoughts down below.

Bring on the new Kryptonians.

@aflynn - As long as they aren't the mainstreams, I can dig it. I wouldn't mind seeing Power Girl.

@aflynn - Sure have MBJ be another Kryptonian, just NOT Superman, because the Main Superman isn't black.

I love the character Supergirl, but giving her Braniac first is already furthering my distaste for the WB because it continues to keep giving me vibes that they are going to push Superman completely out of the way and make her take his place in everything.

Until there is actual confirmation can we stop with the whole Cavill isn't Superman thing anymore? One report is sent out and now all of a sudden there are oh so many rumors that just happened to suddenly formulate.

@MosquitoFarmer - I feel the same way. It’s seens people just can’t wait to get in the negative bandwagon. Since the rumour we have already had Cavills replacement article, what next for superman article.

@MosquitoFarmer - ditto

@MosquitoFarmer - And if they are able to reach a reasonable negotiation the headline will be "Cavill returns", with the language being that they can't make up their minds.

@MosquitoFarmer - The problem is WBs has done this kind of thing before and they seem to get a kick out of toying with the public when they've already known that they made their decision about keeping something or getting rid of it.

Do they really expect this to be more successful than a second Superman film?

Chewtoy

@Pantherpool - Probably? According to Deadline: Hollywood’s estimates in their yearly “most profitable blockbuster” tournament, “Man of Steel” only earned the studio $42m, Batman v Superman brought them $105m (only $2m more than Marvel’s original “Ant-Man” film profited), and “Justice League” did too badly to chart.

I suspect they figure “Why not roll the dice on another character with some name recognition that we can do for cheaper and free of lingering bad associations?”

@Chewtoy - Or not spend 300 million dollars on every single film with another 100 million on marketing?

Seriously they need to just make a 100 million dollar film and not hire several actors who together cost half the budget.

Marvel knows how to control their budgets. The WB freaks out halfway through filming and calls for the whole thing to be reshot.

@storyteller - I don’t disagree... this is just likely an area where WB sees that they can save money from the start. Cavill and Amy Adams would be on their 4th appearances as these characters. They reasonably would want a substantial payday, whereas “Supergirl” would let them pay some ingenue starter money for her big break in blockbuster filmmaking.

Considering that the most profitable films that the DCEU have produced are “Wonder Woman” and the Harley-centric “Suicide Squad”, it’s not surprising that they’d be open to this.

With Cavill completely gone I can see them taking their sweet time casting his replacement and pushing Superman to the back burner, let Kara have her day in the sun.

@aflynn - She can but with her own baddies and not his.

@storyteller - Agreed. That's one of the reasons why I stopped watching the tv series. If these characters are supposed to be so great, let them have their own original villains and secondary characters too.

WB is just stupid. This is what happens when there is no DC studios or a man with a wide and long-term plan.

Why in the hell do they produce a Supergirl movie, when there's an universe of Superman stories that can be adapted?
Superman is literally the most popular superhero all over the world, and yet they do not plan a MoS 2 movie?

Such a waste.
