David Harewood Talks 'Hank Henshaw'; Calls Melissa Benoist A "Fantastic" SUPERGIRL

Earlier this week, Greg Berlanti's Supergirl bagged a series order over on CBS. Playing the role of the villain will be Homeland's David Harewood, who recently expressed his love for comics, and talked about his take on the Cyborg Superman...

While speaking to Digital Spy at last night's BAFTA Television Awards, Homeland alum David Harewood had a few words to say about TV's next superhero hit. After confirming that he's about to head out to LA to start shooting Supergirl's debut season, the British actor expressed his excitement about the CBS show, and called it a potential "surprise package" for television audiences.

He was quizzed about his character, Hank Henshaw, and how he planned on bringing the 'Cyborg Superman' from the page to the screen:

"People always ask me that question, and at the end of the day you've got to bring it to life, and you've got to bring it to life the best way you think is fit... I've taken a lot of hints and clues from what people have said about him, and done a lot of background reading and I've put that together... He's a pretty 'gruff' guy - I'm hoping he's entertaining, but also... frightening."

Harewood also revealed he was a big comic-book fan as a child, and was particularly fond of 2000AD's Bad Company series, for its diversity and dark storytelling. He also had plenty of good things to say about his co-star (and future onscreen nemesis), Melissa Benoist. "I think she's going to be a fantastic Supergirl", Harewood claimed. "I've got two little girls, and I think they're going to be tremendously excited when they see Supergirl flying and kicking serious butt."

What do you think of Harewood's comments? After the show's pick-up this week, are you excited about the thought of Supergirl flying onto your TV screens? As usual, let us know down below! You can also check out the full interview here:

Doesn't Supergirl have her own villains? Is this going to be like Arrow where they use the rogues of other superheroes?

I don't really agree with that. At the moment some of the best stories are being told on TV, the special effects for TV shows have improved greatly over the years, I see no reason why a Supergirl show is a bad thing.

Hell look at The Flash, I never in my life imagined that we would get a modern Flash series and actually have it turn out good.

Question...I'm a marvel comic fan so all my knowledge is in that universe. Got a friend who is DC so we swapping books now n putting each other on. In the middle of sinestro corps GL story so I am seeing cyborg superman, and I own superman doomsday DVD. I have no problem with gender/race change for characters as long as it fits the story and doesn't take away from the core essence of a character.

So my question is...if he is an African American cyborg superman, then are all the supermen(or at least Clark Kent) black in this CBS universe??

@freebirdink843

Well there is sort of black Superman in the comics called Val-Zod and for what we now he might be the "Superman" they will use... Heck there are some (myself included) that suspect Jimmy Olsens race change in the show that Jimmy Olsen will be Val-Zods human alias (even do that is not a thing from the comics)

@freenirdink843 they'll most likely make a new origin for him. hank he share has had two in the comics, and several other superman villains like Braniac and Bizzaro have aswell. No biggy

Why would you not want Kara in the movies? Plus her involvement in the CBS show does not make her not avaiable for the movies. Just look at Flash

Hank Henshaw was pretty much just a Reed Richards clone. He was a scientist and he went into space with his wife, her brother and his friend. They experienced a similar accident as the Fantastic Four. They returned to Earth and couldn't control their powers. Superman thought they were attacking the city and fought them. He eventually realized what was happening and got them help, but not before Henshaw "died."

Henshaw gained the ability to move his consciousness in and out of electronics and could shape them any way he wanted. He reformed himself a couple times in an attempt to communicate his wife who was being treated for cancer. She was repulsed by him, rejected him and then died. Henshaw just kind of went away.

Fast forward about 20 years later...

Superman has been "killed" by Doomsday. Henshaw blames Superman for the death of his family and friends, believing that if Superman hadn't attacked them then they all would have gotten help in time. His consciousness somehow gets into the tech in the Fortress of Solitude. Henshaw is able to get some of Superman's DNA from the regeneration matrix and form a body that is partly made of Superman's tissues. His plan is to pose as Superman and then forever destroy his good name, so that everyone thinks of him as a villain instead of a hero. This story is told in The Return of Superman, which follows The Death of Superman.

The short of it is that Superman doesn't have to be black because Cyborg Superman is made of Superman's tissue, not Hank Henshaw's. Henshaw's tissues were destroyed when he "died" following the accident. The only part left of him is his consciousness.

Off-topic - The Sinestro Corps War you are reading is badass. You really need to read Crisis on Infinite Earths and then Infinite Crisis to become familiar with the people Sinestro has recruited. The Anti-Monitor is a Galactus-ish being who nearly destroyed the multiverse. Superboy-Prime is probably the most powerful version of Superman in existence. You are going to see him whip some major ass.

Alternatively, you could always Google a synopsis of Crisis on Infinite Earths and Infinite Crisis, although you would be missing out on some great reading. You'll be doing yourself a disservice reading through DC stuff without some basic history of the universe. You'll spend half the time wondering who people are and why certain things are important. It would be like skipping right to the last Harry Potter book and just reading the part about the big battle

@Emblemmaniac

I think the reason soforizo suggests leaving Kara out of the films is that unlike the comic books, there are limitations to these comic book cinematic universes that people just aren't getting.

Continuously introducing more and more Kryptonians drastically takes away from the "Last Son of Krypton" - it becomes, "Except also his cousin survived...oh yeah and so did his other second cousin...oh and also his uncle, yeah he lived too...and by the way a whole city of other Kryptonians survived as well."

This would absolutely diminish the Jor-El & Lara-El sacrifice from the DCCU.

At some point it's like ok so in the next film which other 'extinct' person from this 'extinct' planet will be non-extinct? Again, this stuff works in the comics because they had to tell stories for the past 50 years, and the next 50 to come - it could be very problematic in the films.

I forgot some more information that you will find helpful while reading the Sinestro Corps War...

Each of the lantern corps have an entity that embodies the emotion from which they draw their power. Parallax is the fear entity for the Sinestro Corps. Ion is the willpower entity for the Green Lantern Corps. These entities can possess and control a host, which makes the host tremendously powerful.

Finally, Sodam Yat is a Daxamite. A Daxamite is basically a Kryptonian, only their weakness is to lead instead of kryptonite.

in case, you're still perplexed. Henshaw's race does not matter.
He's Cyborg Superman because he made a robotic Superman body,
and transferred his mind into it.

@buckycap that's kind of an unfortunate weakness. Sounds like earth would have no problem fending off a daxamite invasion. handful of people with hand guns could get it done
