No Taylor Swift, No Supergirl

No Taylor Swift, No Supergirl

It would seem that country music singer Taylor Swift will not be starring in a movie focusing on Supergirl. But, really, do you think we’re getting a Supergirl movie at all?

Sites across the internet are all quoting a DC representative dismissing claims that Taylor Swift will be playing Supergirl in a movie about the Kryptonian survivor. The spokesperson has told Scotland’s Sunday Mail newspaper “That’s as clueless a thing as we’ve heard all year.”

Now presumably “all year” refers to 2009, or else the spokesperson forgot the whole new year stuff happening.

But see, this is where I’m a little baffled. What need does DC have for a Supergirl movie? The character isn’t exactly prime material in the comic universe, so apart from the males going to see her in a short skirt I can’t see a real market for a Supergirl movie.

This comes as even more of a surprise when you take into account DC’s new direction to build up to the Justice League movie, rather than starting straight out. The movies that the comic giant will get involved in are going to be focused on a JL movie, especially if they’re dealing with individual characters.

We’ll probably see a Superman movie, eventually. Green Lantern and Flash movies are in the works, and maybe Joss Whedon will accept an apology from DC and comic back and do his Wonder Woman film. Martian Manhunter, Black Canary, Gren Arrow, Aquaman and Hawkman also are possibly worthy of films.

But Supergirl?

Personally, I certainly hope we do get a Supergirl movie. The first one was a noble attempt (and I personally think they had cast a great actress to portray the Maid of Might), but it obviously fell short in more than a few areas. This is the perfect opportunity for a remake (whether or not Taylor Swift is the leading actress). So, I'm all for it...and here's hoping that DC Entertainment gets moving with the CBM's and catches up to Marvel.

And for the record, I disagree that the character does not have value to audiences outside of the horny male society. The current version of Supergirl is meant to mirror the present day issues surrounding many teenage girls in society (most notably when dealing with emotional stresses involving school, peer pressure, and family/friend interactions). As long as the movie is not entirely portrayed as every fan boys' night time fantasy...I believe that DC/Warner Bros. could profit greatly off of the character from the big screen.

I think seeing this brought to the screen is a longshot, WB can't get ahold of Superman so Supergirl just seems like a wasted effort. Maybe in a decade or so once the DC film Universe is well established and the general public have a taste for the secondary characters of DC, but until then... Don't see it.

I don't see how they can waste any resources making
a Supergirl movie when they need to be concentrating
on bringing Superman to the silver screen in a
reboot and all the other characters of the JL,
leading up to the JL movie.

Superman Returns wasn't completely off-base with
Clark Kent's personaility, it just never should
have added the stupid kid idea or Lex Luthor's
tired ass once again as the villain of the piece.

They need to funnel all the funds into a real
Superman movie and all the other JL characters and
leave Supergirl for later! They need to compete
with Marvel/Disney pronto in getting most of the JL
characters on-screen and gearing everything for THE
JUSTICE LEAGUE movie.

And even if they make a Supergirl movie, TAYLOR SWIFT???
Geez, get a real actress to play Supergirl! That is the
worst casting suggestion I've ever heard!!! YUK!!!

I still say Supergirl has enough to worry about, without a movie.

I like Taylor as a person, but doubt she can act worth a flip. Also, Supergirl would be a fair animated feature, but not a live action one.

Hmm...my comment is gone. Taylor has face of a Supergirl, but she would have to put on at least 20 pounds to her scrawny frame to play the part.

Swift was funny on SNL and I liked the spoof she did on twilight crap. I think if she worked hard she could play a serious role and be a good super girl. On a side note whats with the annoying video ads? Does this site not have a donation set up to help pay to keep it up so that we dont have to see those annoying trailer ads? Or at least keep it from auto starting so we can choose to watch it?

If supergirl is going to be in any film, they should just introduce her in the justice league movie or MAYBE a cameo in a superman film. On second thoughts, maybe just a mention in a superman film, and appearance in a JL film would be good.
