SUPERGIRL Cast Acknowledge Pressure To Deliver

Supergirl's Melissa Benoist and Mechad Brooks on the Pressure to Deliver a Worthy Addition to the Superman Mythos

DC Comics television adaptations have a working formula that's firing at all cylinders on The CW.  However, Constantine on NBC has proved to be a ratings disappointment and Fox's Gotham started with strong ratings but finished on a downward trajectory.  So how will Supergirl fare on CBS?  It's anyone's guess at this point but the show will air on the nation's most watched network (though NBC currently has the crown for the coveted 18-49 demographic).  Speaking to IGN various cast members of Supergirl addressed the pressure of delivering a fan-pleasing product on one of the big three American television networks.

Said star Melissa Benoist-  "There’s a lot of pressure, but the good kind to just blow everyone out of the water and inspire some people."

Jimmy Olsen actor Mechad Brooks added - "I’m ecstatic, as we all are. It’s a dream come true but at the same time, it’s also our job so we have to respect the world we’re stepping into but also bring our own voice to it. That’s exciting, doing that juggling act and trying to have a good time and not be stressed out about it."

Brooks goes on to add that Jimmy Olsen will be in somewhat of a mentor role to Benoist's Supergirl as Superman asked Jimmy to watch over his cousin.  "Like any good mentor, I think you step back and you allow someone to be who they are and then you tweak if they ask for advice. Superman asked me to come -- that’s so weird to say, “Superman asked me to come.” Superman asked my character to come and watch over his cousin, who he cares about very much, and help her reach her potential. So it isn’t about me as it is I’m a tool to help her get there.
"

Supergirl will premiere on October 26th on CBS.  A screening of the pilot will premiere at this year's SDCC during the DCTV panel.

Yeah yeah I totally agree the Jimmy Olson thing is silly at best, but they have to have some eye candy for the tennis boppers to look at!

I enjoyed the pilot as well, but they really need to tone down the feminist stuff. Yes, we got a strong female leading character, but having to continually point that out sort of goes against it. It's like they don't believe they can right a good character that happens to be female, but rather they have to point out that it's a FEMALE character. Does that make sense?

@Lemons

You are making complete sense, I agree it did come off a little insecure with all liberal, feminist take in the pilot.

Just like any show it needs to find its footing through the first 7 episodes.

"...but they really need to tone down the feminist stuff."

I get what you mean, but that's probably a sentence that you should never catch yourself saying. People said the same thing about Agent Carter (even though it made perfect sense for the time period, AND it probably was toned down compared to how it realistically was), people are saying it about Supergirl, and people will most likely say the same about Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel. And it's so misguided.

When there are so few movies/shows about female comic book characters being made (and there's a pretty disturbing reason for that, too), it's so important to make those shows/movies have a strong feminist message. Not only is it important for young girls and women to see that, but it's JUST as important for guys to watch and challenge us, too.

You might not like it or see the point of it, but it's on us to gain perspective, educate ourselves, and realize why it's there. Of course it needs to be executed in a clever, well-written, non-cheesy, non-cringey way (I haven't watched the leaked pilot), but feminism (and specifically feminism in our entertainment) isn't just going to go away. Nor should it.

The show will find its footing it is only about to begin its freshmen year. Like Arrow and AOS took the time to find the proper footing for each show respectively. If its like the Flash tho it can blow viewers mind.

I really enjoyed the pilot i was left wanting more

I liked the pilot & am excited to see the series do well. But I don't like Jimmy's character. He's too much of a buff, confident, good-looking dude. Jimmy should be like the everyday normal guy. I personally know alot of professional Photographers, & this Jimmy is like a model. The way the actor portrays Winslow Schott is more of a modern day "Jimmy Olsen" to me

I'm happy to watch a show with a strong female character and especially female Superheroine but the first trailer seemed like a show where she's looking for a boyfriend and rying to juggle her job. Looked like The Devil Wear Prada or something. Anyway I hope it's good and steps up like The Flash did.

"Superman asked my character to come and watch over his cousin..."

The Jimmy Olsen presence is good; or other creative ways could have been done. Superman could have sent Kelex; and the robot could create a holographed humanoid image of itself that befriends and aides Kara with villain knowledge, danger, threats or krypton knowledge. Something like Aya from the Green Lantern CGI cartoon series. I think that would be much cooler.

Supergirl looks pretty desperate. Can't see it going beyond a single season.

@SauronsBANE, honestly, I liked Agent Carter very much and I didn't feel they did any of that. Much of it was just her proving herself to be better than the boys while they were just being asses. It wasn't all in your face like with Supergirl when they have dialogues like "Finally, a female superhero my daughter can look up to" or "You think she can't do it because she's a girl?!" or stuff like that. It doesn't need to be like that to get the point across that we have a strong female character. Agent Carter was very badass.

Maybe the phrase "tone that the feminist stuff" was wrong, but what I meant was they needed to not write it in in such a cheesy or cringey manner. If you have to keep pointing it out and acknowledging it, it defeats the purpose of a female character being on equal levels to like a similar male character because it just seems as if they don't think a female character can be, which I think is what irks me.

@Lemons I gotcha, that's extremely fair. It's just that the phrase you used sends up a few warning flags to me, especially on this site where most users aren't nearly as level-headed or logical as you seem to be. Good stuff!

I don't care if the heroes are male/female, black/white, whatever. Just give me good characters with good storylines & a decent budget & I'm all in.

I didnt like the CGI very much. The characters are not very interesting yet, and Melissa Benoit is the same whiny character she was in Glee. I'm a still give it a chance.

@Lemons

I completely agree with all your comments. It was just the pilot, so maybe they will have worked out those kinks by the 7th episode or so. And you're right - it does defeat the purpose of having a strong female character when they feel they need to [in every bit of dialog] continually remind you that she's a strong female character. Kara can make a feminist statement without having to hit you over the head with it. That dumb's down the character IMHO.

The the other thing that struck me right off the bat was how they down-play that she's an alien. My hope is that the show will use that to tell different compelling stories. Not just stories that stretch feminism. The CW is letting the Flash BE the Flash. CBS needs to let Supergirl BE Supergirl.

Looking forward to Supergirl the Pilot was really good. And I like the passion they have for wanting to make a good show and deliver. It has a lot of potential and I really liked Jimmy Olson in the episode too.
