POLL: Brandon Routh Vs. Tom Welling. Who Should Play Superman?

POLL: Brandon Routh Vs. Tom Welling. Who Should Play Superman?

It seems that the majority of CBM is split down the middle when it comes to which of these actors should be Chris Nolan's #1 choice to play Superman in his next big screen outing, so here's your chance to decide...

So, Brandon Routh or Tom Welling? If you had asked me a year ago I probably would have said neither of them. However, Routh has really impressed me recently in Chuck and <> and although the Superman Returns direction/script was appalling, there's no denying that he made a great Clark Kent. Tom Welling meanwhile has been preparing for the role of Superman for 10 years during his tenure on Smallville and despite the fact some dreadful story lines have been thrown his way over the years, he's shown again and again that he could handle the responsibility of playing the big screen version of the character. Furthermore, both actors have recently expressed a great amount of interest in playing the Man of Steel in Nolan's forthcoming reboot, so it's not hard to imagine they both have a decent shot of getting the role.

Of course, the past links to Superman which make them such fan favourites are also the very things which could be the downside of either of them once again reprising the role. As far as we know, this Chris Nolan scripted movie is supposed to be a fresh start for the character. Will regular movie-goers look at it as either a sequel to Superman Returns or Smallville? A new supporting cast for either actor would probably get rid of any confusion as would the time that's elapsed since Routh last played him. (at least 6 years by the time this new movie comes out) I've seen plenty of other great suggestions for who should play Superman but as the casting decisions for Captain America and Spider-Man surely prove, the studios very rarely pick the actors we want but still manage to make even better ones than we ever thought of!

And that is why, rather than list ALL of the favourite candidates here, I thought I'd see once and for all which of the two most popular picks really is the #1 choice with fans. Any Superman article posted here on CBM is always dominated by these two actors so now it's time to decide! For those of you who want neither of them, I've included an "Other" option as it'll be just as interesting to see how many of you there are. As usual, results will be announced in three days time on Thursday, September 2nd.

Well, I'm not voting because I don't believe fans should have any influence over casting. Fan pressure ruins more films than it helps.

But on a less downer note, once Smallville is over I think that'll be it for Tom Wellings acting career. He has played this one character too long. But if he was to continue on, and be interested in playing Superman in feature films, or voice over for future cartoons - I think that would be cool. He has been Clark Kent for so long and doesn't seem resentful about getting typecasted. Which is an admirable attitude I think most would agree.

Who ever plays Superman next I'm sure they'll do a good job.

super hard choice....

Since ive seen Ruth in the suit id have to lean towards Ruth.

But he only beats Tom in my books by like 2%. Tom W. on the big screen would confuse some peps and I can see a bunch of people who use to watch smallville way back thinking its a smallvile movie.

In the end Routh have the more mature/confident look.
He sort of looks more superMAN, vs superYOUNGMAN.

SoulAllFlush, fan pressure doesn't do squat to movie productions. It's all studio influences.

New actor neither should come back the next film needs to establish itself on it's own.

It sucks for Routh I think he could be great in the role but you tend not to recast the lead in a reboot.

As for Tom Welling I think he doesn't even want to play Superman and I'd rather someone who likes the role play Superman then someone who doesn't.

SMALLVILLE'S too [frick]ed up to ever consider TOM WELLING for a Big Screen SUPERMAN, TV yes... but not Big Screen!

Imagine the sh1tty JLA we would get, plus WELLING don't have the chops, he barely has on SMALLVILLE!

I think CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 3D for him I'm afraid! ; D

I'm going with other. Simply because Nolan wants a fresh take on the Superman franchise. Routh is a victim of a piss poor script. So I see why he wants another crack at Superman.

Welling's version is okay at best. To me he did an alright job of modernizing the character. However we've yet to see him do a true version of Superman(Glasses come to mind, as well as the suit.) So picking Tom just sounds to risky.

Routh or anybody other than Welling!!!
The Superman movies need to be, IN NO WAY related to that bastardization called Smallville. If Welling gets in there, they might as well call it "Smallville: The Movie".

flames809 - 8/30/2010, 11:52 AM

Welling can't act. Period. I've seen him in a couple big screen films and he was awful. Not to mention, If he were to get the role, too many people would associate him with Smalleville, therefore thinking it would be a continuation of the television show.

The same could be said for Routh, but to a lesser extent. He can somewhat act, at least. Hell, look at how well he did acting like Christopher Reeve!

I would rather see someone else play the role, but between these two, I'd say Routh.
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 8/30/2010, 11:57 AM
WTF????

WELLING would kill the character on the Big Screen... and he can't [frick]ing act??!

ECKS @ EXACTLY DUDE!

People are not seeing the big picture... anyone that wants WELLING really wants to destroy the SUPERMAN franchise!

WELLING would make SUPERMAN RETURNS look like 'The Godfather!!'

I think people who don't appreciate Welling as a good Superman should be headbutted, I don't know why people are so against it, I don't see either one of them being castas Superman, Why? Because no one respects the character anymore, NOLAN is not a God! The Dark Knight is a good version of Batman But Admit it the movie was Boring as Hell! I like the film as a Film but it doesn't feel like a Batman movie when i watch them, Much like The resident evil movie doesn't make me think of the game. Welling has earned his right to play a Big Budget Superman Film, But no one respects that, He doesn't write Smallville so what he does on that show thats wrong to fans isn't his fault he has the longest running Superman Series and deserves a shot, Routh looks Like Reeves you can't get away from that Either way those are the only choices for me, but I am almost 100% sure with Nolan involved we are going to get a very Strange Casting Choice that no one will expect and Since people love to suck on the teets of Nolan everyone is going accept it, which is really ridiculous. I knew Superman Returns was going to be Lame before it went into production the Costume was cool but what did Superman do that was Super? Besides being a peeping Tom, a geek and a dead beat father. That movie could have be accepted had they not thrown in a Kid, Kids Ruin all the great Films, The Mummy Series, Hellboy, Indiana Jones, Shrek,Crocodile Dundee, The Xfiles (when Scully got pregnant), Jurrassic Park 2 (Jeff Goldblum saves his kid)....Screw Brien Singer!

Jon Hamm or some underrated actor

the next Superman movie is going to be a reboot so Routh aint going to play Superman ever again.

Tom Welling is just a fricking TV actor who have no presents in Hollywood films. we all know he played Clark Kent in Smallville thats its nothing else.

I'm not sure. I think that I'd have to choose Brandon Routh because he was pretty much the only good thing about Superman Returns and is an all round excellent actor. On the other hand, I'd like to see what Welling could do in the role! However, it would be just as interesting for them to go for an unknown as Marvel did with Chris Hemsworth in Thor!
flames809
flames809 - 8/30/2010, 12:03 PM
arrion- your right people don't see that tom welling has earn the rights to play superman but since they saw routh in the suit and looked like reeve they just fell in love with him.

Unmasked

@ Flames thanks dude :)

Routh could work. Similar to how Sony is treating Ghost Rider.(Yeah I know that sounds awful lol, but hear me out.) Just set the story years later and ignore the fact that Superman has a kid. It could work, but like I said earlier, Nolan wants a fresh start. I think a totally different actor works better.

I'm sure Nolan will pick someone great for the role. He's one of those directors that knows how to bring the best out of his actors.
