So, Brandon Routh or Tom Welling? If you had asked me a year ago I probably would have said neither of them. However, Routh has really impressed me recently in Chuck and <> and although the Superman Returns direction/script was appalling, there's no denying that he made a great Clark Kent. Tom Welling meanwhile has been preparing for the role of Superman for 10 years during his tenure on Smallville and despite the fact some dreadful story lines have been thrown his way over the years, he's shown again and again that he could handle the responsibility of playing the big screen version of the character. Furthermore, both actors have recently expressed a great amount of interest in playing the Man of Steel in Nolan's forthcoming reboot, so it's not hard to imagine they both have a decent shot of getting the role.
Of course, the past links to Superman which make them such fan favourites are also the very things which could be the downside of either of them once again reprising the role. As far as we know, this Chris Nolan scripted movie is supposed to be a fresh start for the character. Will regular movie-goers look at it as either a sequel to Superman Returns or Smallville? A new supporting cast for either actor would probably get rid of any confusion as would the time that's elapsed since Routh last played him. (at least 6 years by the time this new movie comes out) I've seen plenty of other great suggestions for who should play Superman but as the casting decisions for Captain America and Spider-Man surely prove, the studios very rarely pick the actors we want but still manage to make even better ones than we ever thought of!
And that is why, rather than list ALL of the favourite candidates here, I thought I'd see once and for all which of the two most popular picks really is the #1 choice with fans. Any Superman article posted here on CBM is always dominated by these two actors so now it's time to decide! For those of you who want neither of them, I've included an "Other" option as it'll be just as interesting to see how many of you there are. As usual, results will be announced in three days time on Thursday, September 2nd.
