More From Tom Welling on Smallville Season 10, Bringing Back Lex Luthor and Wearing the Suit!

The Smallville actor talks about bringing back Lex, shares his feelings on finally wearing the iconic costume and speculates about what we'll see in the show's final season...

In an interview with IGN TV, Tom Welling goes into even more detail about the end of Smallville and what he'd like to see in the show's 10th season. Below, are some of the main points from the interview but to read the full, unedited, version follow the link at the bottom of the article!

On finding out that Season 10 would be the last and whether he was asked to sit down to talk about it:

I don't know if it really goes like that. I don't know if it's like at family dinners. I think it's more of it being an edict of being like, "Look guys, this is your last year. Do a good job." But you know, 10's a great number; 11 is a great number.

Who knows what's going to happen? I just know that I would love to see a lot of the people we've seen in the past come back. We saw Annette O'Toole last year. I'd love to see John Schneider again. I definitely want to see Michael Rosenbaum. I've got to see Lex.

On why it's important to bring Lex Luthor back to Smallville:

Whatever we're going to do this year with Clark being propelled into being Superman, how do you do that without a Lex Luthor? You know what I mean? That doesn't make sense to me. So I hope to see him.

On whether it's a given that Clark will be wearing the Superman suit from the start of Season 10:

I don't know if it's a given. I actually just don't know. I don't know what the storyline is. What we've done in the past is we've been able to tease it, and I think keep it interesting for fans. And I think that they'll be more. We'll see more of the suit this year – I would think we'd have to.

On how he feels about finally donning the costume:

Terrified. Absolutely terrified!

On Granny Goodness and what we might see in Season 10:

I honestly don't know. I wish I could tease something! The idea of Granny Goodness -- which they had to explain to me, as we were shooting it -- I thought was awesome. And I believe that she has this group of younger girls who work for her. I would imagine they would be around this year.

JoshW: I've been one of Smallville's biggest critics recently as the show has continued, in my opinion, to go downhill. However, after a much improved Season 9 it does feel like a pity that it's coming to an end now it's finally starting to get better! Hopefully, they'll end the show with a bang and after 10 long years will finally let Clark fly! However, I still have my fingers crossed for a (fully costumed) Superman spin-off! :)

Last season of Smallville! Clark has to wear the suit and Lex has to come back. There cant be a Superman without a Lex. They have to bring all they got for all the Smallville fans to keep watching until the season is over and bring back past fans that loved the show. i believe Smallville is a great show and it has gotten better with every season so I hope I get to see Past actors (Supergirl, Inpulse, Aquaman, Lex luther, Cyborg, Lana Lang) and anyone else i forgot.

Despite it's flaws, I still remain a loyal Smallville fan. I just don't know if it's a good idea to be doing Apokolips stories on a tv budget. I wish WB would get crackalackin' on a JLA movie and save Darkseid and company for the big screen.

I doubt he realized it, but Tom verified that was Granny Goodness in the season finale. Many of us suspected, but he just confirmed it. He said, "The idea of Granny Goodness -- which they had to explain to me, as we were shooting it -- I thought was awesome. And I believe that she has this group of younger girls who work for her." Why would they have to explain a character that wouldn't be in the show?

@ least even HE was saying they need to bring Lex back. If they don't....f#ck this show. I think thats more important than the suit coming into play before the finale.

I really lost interest on this show and my perception of Tom Welling was that he was a bit of a douche. After reading his interview and some of the comments here, I think I may have been mistaken. Sounds like the show has improved and Tom may actually give rat's ass about it. I really stuck around for the 1st eight seasons and then got really annoyed at how they would go to such ridiculous lengths to keep Clark from flying or wearing the suit. I think I may actually tune in for the series finale and maybe even catch up on some of what I missed. Thanks Josh! Cool article.

p.s. I did tune in just to watch the JSA episode, and though it was far from perfect, I totally geeked out from seeing the JSA in live action.

The show has always operated with a "no tights, no flights" requirement from the beginning. Smallville started out as a good show . . . I remember my entire family sitting down to watch each new episode. I didn't worry about departures from cannon -- Smallville is its own re-telling of the Superman story, but every reference added to the fun.

Then they turned into the stupid years. Emo Clark and overuse of She-who-must-not-be-named, stupid stories and generally bad writing. The too much sex made it inapproprate for my young kids.

The last few years have been better . . . still problems, but the more they have added in references to the DC universe, the better the show has gotten -- mostly. Doomsday was meh, and we never got to see a huge fight (budget concerns, I'm sure). I found the actor who played Zod to be annoying and one-dimentional. Some effort was made to make him a more complex character, but it really didn't work for me.

Tom Welling does a nice job in the role, but I would have liked to see more of a separation of Clark Kent and his alter-ego. Smallville's Clark is too much of a hero for anyone to believe that just a pair of Glasses would be enough to hide his identity. (Maybe they have some plans for that . . . a post-hynotic suggestion to everyone he knows?)

Erica Durrance is the best Lois Lane ever put on screen. I like Hartley's Oliver/Green Arrow. Michael Rosenbaum was a great Lex, and was very good at making the character complex. The addition of the JLA/JSA has really given a boost to the show. The Legion, on the other hand, was kind of lame. Loved Zatana -- perfect casting. Same with Laura Vander-whatever as Supergirl.

I hope that they add in the Glasses early in the next season. There needs to be some basis that reasonably intelligent people wouldn't instantly know that Clark and Superman are the same person. I expect the Suit to be teased for quite a while. It will be interesting to see the explanation of why Clark hasn't been able to fly while the other Kryptonians have.

@ Local Man - you know I was thinking about this the other since on HD Net channel in the mornings they show repeats of Smallville. I was asking why didn't they just start off with Clark and his glasses. To me it was the writers trying to reinvent the wheel or just didn't have confidence that the show will last 10 seasons. I don't see what would've been the harm of him having to start off with glasses already.

@ Superdog - I agree I rather have the writers go that route, use Dark's thugs to cause harm rather showing him.
I just don't see a true transition to the small scene especially with a small budget.

I can also see why he will be terrified to don the suit. It's a big step after so many years. I think it will make or brake the everyone's final opinion on the show. But it be interesting to see if he does don the whole entire suit in season 10, how would he look? would it spark Nolan's interest to at least allow him to read for the part in MOS?
It be interesting to see.

It would be great to finally see Clark wear the Superman costume, and Tom shouldn't be terrified of wearing it,especially now that by the looks of season 9 Tom is back in fairly decent shape, he was slightly out of shape for a while there. He already has a good muscular build,he would need to just tone up just a bit more and he'll look great in Supe's costume. Anyhow the last episode of season 9 was pretty great, loved the scene where Clark clocks Zod in to thy sky "or orbit" and saves Lois from going splat on the phone booth, as well as the last fight between Clark and Zod at the end of the show...very awesome.

Granny Goodness was pretty much confirmed by Welling. That's a nice little tidbit of information. Clark already donned the glasses this past season, he just isn't wearing them full time yet.

Looking forward to Season 10!

I don't know about you guys, but I thought having Lex disappear was a good thing for smallville. If he never left, the writers would've continued to write storylines involving the lex/clark, or lex/Green Arrow feud, and probably would've never gotten around to incorporating so many of the other DC universe in the show. Do you think that we would've seen the Legion, Checkmate, Amanda Waller, Icicle, Black Canary, etc? they probably would've still done Doomsday, the JSA and Zod, but would it have been as in depth in storyline? I think it gave them an opportunity to do more diverse storylines, and put some well deserving characters in the spotlight. I do agree that Lex needs to come back in the last season, even if it's in the last episode, for series closure, but if they don't, what can u do? cancel the show?.....lol

It still bugs me that Tom knows absolutely NOTHING about comic books, but he did okay last season. Season 9 was their best season. Season 10 is going to be really hard to pull off. No matter what happens, I think it's time to end the show but I'll really, really miss it when it's gone.

Granny Goodness and the Furies are like the Stepmother and her Daughters to Cinderella. Its like Supergirl defeating her enemies. Remember watching "LITTLE GIRL LOST" in Superman: Animated Series Kara saves her big brother Superman from being kidnapped and slaved him to the hands of Darkseid. That might mimic the whole thing to season 10 for Kara meeting her newest foes of Apokolips are Granny Goodness and the Furies. To save her big brother Clark from the clutches of Darkseid.

@Talontd - yeah dude, I realize that now, But I was really fed up with the trench coat mafia look and the bullshit episodes that really seemed to be going no where. The thing is that it is so freaking hard to find these episodes on line. I've been on the web site and the WB makes it a point not to have the episodes available on line. Another thing that made it difficult for me was the move to Friday nights. I don't have a DVR and if I wasn't home to watch it, it meant I wasn't going to see it for a while. I guess I'll have to wait for it to come out on DVD ...
