You can tell the SAG-AFTRA strike is over because casting news is once again hitting the trades.

According to Deadline, James Gunn is back at work putting together his Superman: Legacy cast, with Venezuelan actress María Gabriela de Faría (Animal Control) set to play Angela Spica/The Engineer.

In the comics, Angie Spica is the second Engineer, and a member of the Authority. She has a liquid body due to nanites in her bloodstream, and with this metal blood, she can create solid objects. The character was created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, and first appeared in The Authority #1 in 1999.

The trade refers to her as a villain but we're not sure if that means she'll be an antagonist in Gunn's reboot.

There were rumours early on that Superman: Legacy would feature The Authority, though we later heard that was a misdirect to distract from the fact members of the Justice League will appear. Apparently not! It’s unclear whether any other characters from the Wildstorm team are going to show up, though Matthew Vaughn remains a frontrunner to helm The Authority movie and has confirmed he’s met with DC Studios.

De Faría is a rising star who recently appeared in The Exorcism of God. She’s also starred in The Moodys and Deadly Class, a well-received Image Comics adaptation executive produced by the Russo Brothers.

Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

David Corenswet is playing the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to star as Lois Lane. other recent casting additions include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

Skyler Gisondo is rumoured to be playing Jimmy Olsen and we recently learned Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Kurt Russell may be in the running for Jor-El.

Superman: Legacy is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.

I remember her briefly from Deadly Class and I still got to finish the 1st Season of Animal Control, think that I left it hanging just as when her character showed up.

Not sure if we can say the adaptation of Deadly Class was well-received since SyFy canceled it after 1 Season despite the involvement of the Russo brothers. From what I remember it needed to take some liberties like The Boys did because the main characters were quite unlikable saldy.

Well, this confirms at least that The Authority characters are indeed gonna have a presence and role in the first DCU film just as quite many leaks/scoopers were claiming.

Gonna be hard to argue that Legacy isn't being used, one way or the other, to set up the aforementioned Authority film.

That's some nice eye candy. Shame Deadly Class got axed, it had potential.

@TheVisionary25 - oh yeah, kinda forgot about the other two. Could see them be a version of The Terrifics, but preferably still in a minor role

Cool , congrats to her!!.

I can see The Authority being akin to The Elite in the comics where they challenge Superman’s ideals in beliefs but being this “any means necessary” group of “heroes”.

Anyway , I am concerned about overcrowdedness in this but I have faith in Gunn to pull it off so cautiously optimistic overall.

@TheVisionary25 - well the elite was based on the authority

@dracula - Should use them instead considering they're the ones that actually challenged Superman in that well-received story arc that even got an animated movie.

@NinnesMBC - true but the elite only really have 1 story

The authority have a decade of comics to pull from

@dracula - A really good 1 story. How many do these lowkey anti-heroes have? Their only relevance was some years ago with that comic Superman and The Authority, that's it.

@NinnesMBC - havent read the Authority yet, but from what ive heard the Warren Ellis run was top notch.

the other runs, from what ive heard the runs after Ellis left were what "Whats So Funny About Truth, Justice and The American Way" was taking shots at.

was a very popular series.

@dracula - So only one good run and the rest that came afterwards were just riding off the coattails of The Elite and was just salvaged by it's popularity. Sounds meh.

Why the [frick]....is authority characters in superman.

@Tigerman33 - serve the same purpose as the elite but with the added bonus of potential for spin off
FireandBlood

@Tigerman33 - Because this is a DCU build up first and a Superman movie second.

@Tigerman33 - Gunn must want conflict and probably Engineer will have a cool fight against Metamorpho.

But clearly they want this new cinematic universe to already be populated by many powered individuals from the get-go and have to prepare that team for their spinoff film that, I think, takes place right after this one.

@Tigerman33 - my guess is to do that world building these movies are supposed to do. makes more sense than adding all of the other heroes.

I guess the SOLO Superman film was not over stuffed just yet!

@Forthas - They never had any interest in making one of those

@FireandBlood - Did James Gunn not say...

"I was offered Superman years ago — I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved.”

https://variety.com/2023/film/news/james-gunn-superman-legacy-director-1235555507/

I don't think taking more and more of the spotlight away from Superman gives him "...the dignity he deserves"

This is a shameless effort to hyper start a shared universe on the back of Superman. To be fair one could argue it worked for Wolverine who wasintroduced in the first X-men film. But I remain skeptical.

bkmeijer1 - 11/15/2023, 5:08 PM
@Forthas - based in that comment, it does feel like the movie is still gonna be a major focus on Superman.

Could kinda compare it to CATWS. That had multiple heroes and a villain that was gonna be a hero later on as well, yet it was still very much about Cap.

@Forthas - Unfortunately most people in Hollywood, only like Superman because of the Christopher Reeve movies, not necessarily the comic book lore. So it feels like James Gunn sort of got roped into writing a Superman reboot. And the only way he could get excited about it, was if he added others characters in it, that interested him more.
Forthas
Forthas - 11/15/2023, 5:24 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I have to disagree about Winter Soldier...it had six super heroes/ villains and that is counting Nick Fury and Black Widow, and Batroc...three humans!!!

This already has six super powered characters, not including a rumored Lex Luthor, or any other members of the Authority assuming they are part of the story as a team. In addition to that Captain America, Nick Fury and Black widow were already established in the universe from multiple earlier films.

No this film is over stuffed. A lot of people who were ragging on BvS for being overstuffed are going to owe Zack Snyder an apology if they are now supporting this. I say that as a person that believes he is uniquely the MOST responsible for the state of the DC film universe.
