Though it may still be a while before we find out who will take over from Henry Cavill as the next big-screen Man of Steel, the wheels are now in motion.
Superman: Legacy writer/director James Gunn has confirmed that a casting director has been hired for the DCU reboot. He didn't mention who it was, but we're hearing John Papsidera - who has worked with Gunn on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker - is the man who has been enlisted to find the actor who will don the iconic red and blue suit.
Gunn has already debunked several potential candidates for the role, but has previously given us some idea of how he envisions this new take on the legendary DC Comics hero.
"He's a big old galoot. He is a farm boy from Kansas who is very idealistic. His greatest weakness is that he’ll never kill anybody and doesn’t want to hurt a living soul. And I like that sort of innate goodness about Superman as his defining characteristic.”
Some feel that Gunn's style doesn't really lend itself to a character like Superman, but the filmmaker is well aware that he'll need to change things up a bit for this movie.
“I learned so much from making these movies,” Gunn said of his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy during an interview with Rolling Stone. “But it’s not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie. It’s actually quite different.”
Right now, all we really know about Superman: Legacy is that it's set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and will focus on the early days of the character.
“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world," said Gunn during the slate announcement. "I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”
Who would you like to see take to the skies as the next Superman?
