UPDATE #2: MAN OF STEEL Is No Match For Monsters Or Zombies After A $12.7M Friday

While Man of Steel impressed many by earning a little under $170 million over the course of seven days, Superman now looks set to fall victim to the monsters of Monsters University and the zombies of World War Z as it enters its second week of release. Read on for details!

Last night, we presented you with some rough estimates which seemed to indicate that Man of Steel would battle it out with World War Z for second place at the North American box office, while Pixar's Monsters University would quite comfortably dominate the top spot. While the latter point remains to be the case - it took $29 million on Friday and is now likely to hit upwards of $80 million this weekend in part thanks to a glowing 'A' CinemaScore - the battle for #2 is now not so much of a battle. Despite a mixed (but mostly positive reaction) from critics, a 'B+' CinemaScore helped the PG-13 zombie movie to overperform yesterday with an impressive $24 million and projected $62 million weekend. This is considerably more than the initial $50 million estimates and a good sign that this could potentially be the beginning of a new franchise for Paramount.

Now, Man of Steel. After opening last Thursday, its total as of yesterday was $168.8 million, and when you take out those evening and midnight showings, it had the 17th biggest opening week of all-time. That's obviously a very good start for the Zack Snyder directed and Christopher Nolan produced reboot, but a disappointing $13.2 million Friday (that's a drop of 71%) means that it should finish the weekend with around $42.7 million for a domestic total of $210 million. Now, this is by no means a BAD result and it's worth bearing in mind that the likes of Iron Man 3 and The Avengers didn't have two major new blockbusters to square off against in only their second weeks of release. It remains to be seen what will happen overseas, but we'll be sure to keep you updated!

UPDATE: As you can see from the Tweet below, Man of Steel has in fact performed a little worse than initially reported. We're hoping to receive confirmed numbers either later today or tomorrow.

UPDATE #2: Some more refined numbers for you now once again courtesy of Deadline. Monsters University actually took a whopping $30.8 million, while World War Z earned $25.5 million for a now predicted weekend cum of at least $63 million. Man of Steel did indeed take only $12.7 million, but it's still well on its way to reaching the numbers mentioned above. Again, stay tuned!

If this continues, we're not getting a sequel to Man of Steel at all.

You can tell this gut is a MOS fanboy because he tries to justify why The Avengers and IM3 did better at the box office. Whats the point? Why bring Marvel into this? Its an article about MOS, Monsters University and WWZ. Not a single thing has anything to do with Marvel.

well I was hoping for a better hold since man of steel was a very entertaining movie, and IMDB and metacritic user scores indicated that people liked it very much but actually the drop is quite big for Friday and indicates overall average acceptance by people. but to correct the article iron man fell exactly 71% as well as stated without any competition and in terms of superhero movies which earned $100 mil + in the opening weekend ONLY TDK & Avengers had falls less than 70% in second Friday. so it is actually performing like any other superhero movie, only thing is nothing exceptional which i was hoping it would be.

I could see the ambitious glow slowly drifting away from some of these hardcore DC/Superman fanboys eyes.

What's happening with "The King is Back!" talk? lol.

at the end of it's run MoS will probably be at 450-500m at the box office, enough to warrant a sequel

And no one was surprised.

@Maruader: It'll make enough to warrant a sequel. It's only week 2 and still has some places to be released.

@Astonishing, good point. No reason bringing Marvel into this. If anything you have to give Marvel credit for setting dates on movies so far in advance. It allows other companies to give them a wide berth. DC/WB needs to go ahead and greenlight their shared universe and lock down dates now. This will force companies to give them at least two week before competing.

WWZ is definitely a surprise after being slammed before it was even shown. Looks like it's not a bad movie at all. Going to see it next week.

MoS fanboys have no fear though. This movie will do well at the international box office and should have enough legs to get $350 to $360 domestic. See DC fanboys, even though you were saying international box office didn't matter when you were bashing IM3, it will save MoS. International box office is as important to these studios as domestic, so MoS will have no problem getting a sequel.

Everyone who really wanted to see Man Of Steel seen it last week. Other than those who were going to love it regardless, most were underwhelmed. Its hard to have a top weekend the following weekend with such a bland film.

I'd call for a reboot but the casting was actually good. Remove Nolan & Snyder from this series ASAP and go in a completely different direction on the next film.

Its all been downhill since the dark knight. The avengers was able to succeed on nostalgia despite the fact was average at best same goes for all the CBM shit that has followed and all the same bland shit to come (Thor and cap)

It was a decent film plain and simple. But I went in a large group of 16 people for my birthday and only 3 of them wanted to see it with me again. And they were the die hard Superman fans. It was an ok film it wasn't OMGSPECTACULARMASTERPIECE!! Like most people are saying. It was heavy on Character development and action light on plot. And I spent the drive home listening to my friends discuss the film, and how many plot holes and problems there where with the film.

Man of Steel was absolutely amazing. Everyone go out and see it again. See it a 3rd or 4th time so we can get a sequel and Justice League off the ground.

Nothing to do with quality. It's about the other movies taking over the box office. Monsters University scores well with the kids, Brad Pitt will pull anyone in.
