Many of the best Hollywood film makers start out directing much smaller, more "arty" movies that take them to the next level through critical acclaim. Shane Carruth may just be poised to take that step after his pretty incredible sophomore effort; the beguiling but beautiful Upstream Color. But would the director even want to try his hand? Over at the Bullseye Podcast they put the question to him, and he answered by giving his takes on both a 007 flick and the Man Of Steel himself, Superman.
"The only James Bond movie I would ever want to see is the one where he loses a hand. And the only Superman movie I'd ever want to see is the one where Superman comes to understand that people have become too reliant on him and he cant' be their God anymore. And he basically, actively, doesn't help them. And people end up dying in the learning process that they can't rely on their God anymore. That's the only way to get near these stories for me, and nobody would ever pay for that, so…I don't think I'm the right guy for those stories."
Interesting, and I see where he's coming from in wanting to shake up the status quoa but of course he's right -- character development is one thing but people don't like their icons to go through THAT big a transformation. Would you like to see a Bond movie where 007 had to get by with just one hand? Or a Superman movie where Kal El stopped being a hero? Sound off below.
