UPSTREAM COLOR Director Shane Carruth Shares His Ideas For A SUPERMAN Movie

Carruth has produced a stunning, cerebral, and not in the slightest bit mainstream sci-fi flick called Upstream Color. But what if his talents were transferred to the blockbuster? Read on to hear the controversial stipulations that would see him direct both a Superman and a Bond movie.

Many of the best Hollywood film makers start out directing much smaller, more "arty" movies that take them to the next level through critical acclaim. Shane Carruth may just be poised to take that step after his pretty incredible sophomore effort; the beguiling but beautiful Upstream Color. But would the director even want to try his hand? Over at the Bullseye Podcast they put the question to him, and he answered by giving his takes on both a 007 flick and the Man Of Steel himself, Superman.

"The only James Bond movie I would ever want to see is the one where he loses a hand. And the only Superman movie I'd ever want to see is the one where Superman comes to understand that people have become too reliant on him and he cant' be their God anymore. And he basically, actively, doesn't help them. And people end up dying in the learning process that they can't rely on their God anymore. That's the only way to get near these stories for me, and nobody would ever pay for that, so…I don't think I'm the right guy for those stories."

Interesting, and I see where he's coming from in wanting to shake up the status quoa but of course he's right -- character development is one thing but people don't like their icons to go through THAT big a transformation. Would you like to see a Bond movie where 007 had to get by with just one hand? Or a Superman movie where Kal El stopped being a hero? Sound off below.

Both incredibly interesting concepts for films, but both are also status quo shattering ideas which would hinder any sequel potential.

Kingdom Come already kind of dealt with those themes of humanity being too reliant on Superman, and his taking a step back, so I could see any potential movie adaptation dealing with similar concepts.

What an idiot thinking he's thought up some "new idea." Many people have explored the idea fo Superman giving up his powers, or actively not using them. Grounded comes to mind, hell Superman II comes to mind.

Or even any "world without Superman" arc has explored this numerous times, like the Death of Superman. It can be interesting for a short time, but soon gets quite boring and derivative.

The real interesting storylines are always those that involve some sort of moral dilemma for Superman. For instance, how does he deal with the FACT that he can't saved everyone, or be two places at once? How does the world deal with that fact? How does he deal with the idea of putting American disasters ahead of international disasters? Etc etc...

Just making a movie where he decides not to help anyone is not interesting at all.

Extremely intriguing, and I'd actually like to see someone like Carruth taking on projects like these - I just know that he's going to give some radical, yet highly interesting spins on the characters, et cetera. But...well, on the other hand, perhaps he might be TOO radical to drive those concepts all by himself, and indeed I'll never see that happening, so I'll just let him stick with his original ideas. Hey, he's best working that way anyway, and I actually love how his original projects are always stunning, cerebral, and (especially) not in the slightest bit mainstream indeed.

The Superman story points have been covered before and I can't say they have been my favorite.

On Bond, taking 007 to such a serious level misunderstands the original, escapist, good time at the theater intention. Like Indian Jones without a leg?

Instead of heroes facing personal issues, I prefer them to solve external problems using their skill set—while transporting us new places. Fun entertainment. Take us away from personal issues.

Think of Superman as a metaphor for the US government- what SHOULD he do, how much do we WANT him to help or contribute to our safety. Our country is divided, what a facinating way of telling the superman story and to make people see "the other side". Xmen 2 did that to a certain extent with Gays and Muslims.

Also, what if Batman was more directly compared to the CIA- to what extent do we want the entity to work beyond the limits of the law, the rights of the individual.

Superhero as metaphor for public opinion on government, security, human rights.

Glad to see he'll never direct either...the Bond idea is terrible and the Superman idea was covered in Superman Returns.

Interesting. However, I feel like that concept for a Superman story is more about the people's reaction to Superman's decision than a journey for the character himself. I could see it playing out in a television mini-series more so than a Superman film.

beane2099 - 4/28/2013, 11:38 AM
That's not a new Superman concept really. And I wouldn't want to see that movie. Superman Returns was enough emo Supes for me.

Not that it isn't interesting or anything. With comics if a story isn't to your liking there'll be another on along in a few months. With movies you get one shot evey few years. And if noone likes the story the franchise dies and you get no more stories. That sort of concept is better in a serialized format. But then they already got Smallville didn't they?

I think they should do a Bond movie in which we see him battle his personal demons..Such as his fear of Kittens or his addiction to fruit roll ups.

And I want to see the Superman movie we've all been waiting for... "Superman: The Quest For Peace 2".

The Camelot Falls story arc actually dealt with that to a degree in regard to Superman, though in that case, it was a warning from the future that humanity's over-reliance on Superman will cause their downfall unless Superman begins to ween them off his being their constant savior.

The context of the way the question was raised worked. If we're talking the context of a world without heroes other than Superman where he'd quit.... yeah... that'd be a harder sell.
