Luke Evans Updates On THE CROW; Says Remake Will Be "Mostly The Same" As Original

The actor talks about playing Eric Draven in F. Javier Gutiérrez's remake of the classic CBM, and what the original movie and its star Brandon Lee meant to him. He also confirms that -- a bit of "reimagining" aside -- it will indeed be a straight remake.

Luke Evans certainly has a busy time ahead of him. Not only will he play Bard The Bowman in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug and the lead role in the new Dracula movie, but he's also signed on to star as Eric Draven in the upcoming remake of The Crow. When this remake was first announced, there were rumors that it would not follow the exact same plot as the original (and of course the original comic from James O'Barr) and veer off into new territory. But while talking to SHH about it, Evans says that although the character will undergo a bit of refreshing, we will be getting pretty much the same story.

"[The Crow] was a very poignant film from my childhood, which I remember vividly. The soundtrack, also. It was such a solid performance that Brandon Lee gave. It was a very tragic end for somebody that probably would have had a very promising career... I'm Eric Draven. I'm the same character. Obviously, he's been refreshed and brought up to date. We're reimagining it to a certain extent, but the story and the plot is mostly the same."

The Crow will shoot next year.

Speaking in general, it would be the same. Eric Draven rising from the dead to avenge his and his lover's murders by systematically targeting those responsible until he makes his way to the top of the food chain is pretty much the same story and plot as both the film and O'Barr's comic (not to mention virtually EVERY Crow story ever published since O'Barr's original).

The devil literally is in the details when it comes to this. That's kind of the important thing that'll make the difference between this being a re-adaptation of the comic vs. a straight up pointless, redundant remake of a movie that still stands on it's own (with a soundtrack that, for the most part, will likely still kick more ass than anything they could cobble together today ).

Sounds to me like Evans is glossing over what's really a very simple, but important distinction. Specifics man. Specifics.

And a soundtrack full whiney emo pop punk bands with their eyeliner and faux hawks. The original character was based on Iggy Pop, not Jared Leto.

Am I the only one that thought the original was pretty campy and Brandon Lee is an overrated actor? I just watched it last weekend on BBC America after not seeing it for years and it's so corny. Lines are so poorly delivered. It could've been just a straight up dark film, but then there's all this camp.

Michael Wincott though needs to make a comeback like Michael Massee.

I had really hoped this would be a more direct adaptation of James O'Barr's comic.

As great as the original was it had very little resemblance to the source material. Now I admit I'm an elder by CBM standards, I was around for the original comic run and collected them as they were slowly released, and I have to say I still prefer the comic to the movie.

The comic story was much darker and the character of Eric was more self destructive. Life was painful for him, both physically and psychically. He was a dead creature forced back to the realm of the living by his own rage and inertia, and yet he could not rest until justice was dealt most viciously to those who had killed he and Shelly. And anyone who has read the comic knows their deaths especially her's were infinitely more hateful and traumatic than the 1993 film dared show at the time. If you've read the books you know what I'm talking about and you can see why it led to an almost degradation of the soul of this man.

Give me a straight adaptation of the books and I will show you a deeper, darker, and far more disturbing movie than the classic was and one I feel will hold its own far better than a straight remake ever could.

If it will mostly be the same then what's the point of doing a remake? Brandon Lee's The Crow does not need a remake.

The Originals a classic,a remake is unnecessary.Unless they make a straight adaptation of the Original Comic,Otherwise theirs no way this film will be better than the original...

@SuspenseSmith - I agree with you 100% I loved rewatching Jurassic Park at the theatre again. I even thought the 3D was damn impressive and I still say to this day that that movie has the most impressive use of cgi than any movie currently made. And that's the point, it doesn't matter how many times you see a movie on TV or DVD, there's something awesome about getting to watch it in a movie theatre. Studios would save millions by not having to shoot a new, and most likely inferior, movie and would still generate revenue by selling movie tickets. Personally, I'd love to see remastered prints of Ghostbusters and Tim Burton's Batman on the silver screen again.

"Obviously, he's been refreshed and brought up to date."

This sounds like it could beither pretty cool or damn embarassing.

"We're reimagining it to a certain extent, but the story and the plot is mostly the same."

...pointless much?

So if it's the same what's the point. You should try and making it better than the original that's the whole point in life trying to better ourselves.
