During Wondercon, Andrew Kreisberg finally settles the score on the proper way to say, Ra's Al Ghul!

During a press panel at Wondercon, CINECHEW reports that Andrew Kreisberg was asked during the Q&A on the proper way to prounced the head of the leagues name. 

Kreisberg said, "This is actually something that came up a lot when we were making the show. Before the nolan franchise, a lot of comic book fans pronounced it 'Raysh', but once Nolan started to pronounce it 'Rawz' - it changed everything. We wanted to please both the people who were fans of the comics and fans of just the films/shows. So we decided that members of the league would pronounce it 'Raysh' on the show, and non members would pronounce it 'Rawz'. "

Personally, I think we know there's only one way to say it which is 'Raysh', but I think this gives us a lot of insight to the confusion on why literally every character on the show pronounces it differently.

Its Raws. Saying Raysh is like saying cool hwhip like Stewie does on Family Guy. It is pronounced Raws in Arabic, the language used.

@Canon108 They pronounced it Raysh in the animated series because that is how Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams, the creators pronounce it. But in all honesty I believe when they created the character they didn't bother to get the right pronunciation and just stuck with it ever since

For Christ sake, both Nolan and BTAS are the right way of saying it. Dennis O'Neal said BTAS is how you say it but the correct Arabic pronunciation of it is the Nolan films.

So both are right in terms of how to say Ra's.

@knightinarkham1 It isn't obvious to most. Both of his pronunciations are wrong.
If it's رأس الغول then it's neither 'Raysh' nor 'Rahz', but 'Rahs'. The reason it is spelled Ra's would be because when you pronounce the 'ah' sound, you're supposed to stop right before pronouncing the 's', so that it's a bit like 'rah_s'. But this is comic book land, where languages aren't pronounced correctly.

It's pronounced Rahs! Doesn't matter what Dennis O'Neal says because he didn't create the Arabic word.

If you want to be REALLY authentic, then neither is correct. It would HAVE to be pronounced "Raa-is", with a guttural stop after the long A (rather than an I, i just put it there to make it easier to read". "Raaz" is a close approximation, so it's forgiven. RAYSH IS JUST PLAIN WRONG!!

RAYSH means FEATHER. Everytime he introduces himself as Raysh, he's basically calling himself the Feather of the Demon.

The person who asked the question was probably trying to get Kreisberg to pick one pronunciation over the other, and this was his cop-out answer. Also, people who have only been fans of Batman and DC Comics since the Nolanverse may not have gotten it so easily.

As for people who think it should be 'Raz' because that is the proper Arabic, as opposed to 'Raysh', you completely fail to understand the origin of the character. Ra's was raised by nomads who migrated from China to Arabia. It would not be surprising if they had their own dialect of Arabic. Different dialects can be very different for the same language. For example, in the Bengali language, people from Bangladesh will use an 'ss' sound in certain words, while people from West Bengal in India will use a 'ch' sound instead, for the same words. The creators of the character call him 'Raysh' so that's how it should be.

Both ways are pronounced wrong. It is like how you pronounce the name Ross. It isn't that hard at all to say. Yet so many people say it wrong.

Well, "ra'is". And technically, "Ra's al-Ghul" doesn't mean "Demon's head", but "Ghoul's head"

@krylonshadow: Your point about dialects is quite solid. However, i cannot concede because despite dialects, Raysh is an entirely different word altogether. You can only bend the rules so far before you're breaking them entirely.
