Marc Guggenheim Says The Flash Is "3 Movies In One", Reveals What We Can Expect From The Story

In an interview with Newsarama, writer Marc Guggenheim speaks a little about what we can expect to see when a big screen outing for The Flash finally comes our way..

Greg Berlanti has mentioned Barry Allen when talking about the upcoming screen outing for The Scarlet Speedster before, now writer Marc Guggenheim confirms that he will be our Flash. He also talks about the tone of the film and his favourite runs on the comic.

"We are working on The Flash movie now and typing away..We are being true to whole Barry Allen science police, [back then] that's what foresic exanimers were, we are being true to those origins and updating them for the 21st century and I feel like, in many ways, the movie, it's three movies in one, it's part thriller, that forensic, cool, se7en, Silence of the Lambs then part superhero movie and part sports movie because there is an athleticism to this character that other superheroes don't have so that's fun to play with and you get to see how all three of those elements form each other and make the whole movie even better.

Guggenheim also says that the run on the comic dearest to his heart is the Mike Baron run, volume 2. Which of course focuses on Wally West! But he quickly goes back to Allen when he says what comics the movie will actually take from.

We're focusing on a lot of different eras. But I think a lot of Geoff Johns stuff, and Marc Wade, with the philosophy of speed is an influence. And we have also tried to take from the old Silver age Barry Allen stories.

Guggenheim was next asked about a possible Green Lantern cross over, to which he replied that those decisions are "a little above my pay grade", but that he has always wanted cross overs and campaigns for them so who knows?

So, sounds like we are in for a pretty strange original film at least! What are your thoughts on the direction so far? You can listen to the full video interview by clicking the link below.

Hopefully it comes out before 2013. I'm interested in seeing the "se7en" aspect of the film.

Focus on the CSI aspect and the superhero aspect for sure. But leave the "sport" shit out. Flash's concept has as much to do with sports as any other superhero's concept. Which is to say not at all. He's not "athletic", he has a super power. Leave the special olympics out of it. The only thing that urked me about Lois & Clark was watching Superman play sports with himself just because he could. For Flash: More Science, less sports.

Shoot me if you like but I've always prefered Wally West! Just finished watching all the JL and JLU cartoons and his dynamic in the group is excellent! I know a JL movie is unlikely but one can hope!

Ron- Personally, even though i loved the cartoons on top of Wally's dynamic in it, i feel that for live action box office feature films, Hal's (Ryan Reynolds) usual toned down sense of humor will be enough dynamic for my tastes. Anything more, like what Wally would contribute, would be too light hearted and would take importance away from tragic events that would happen in the film IMHO.

Set2Fallfirst- Happy birthday :P

Shaman - you make a good point! I plum forgot about RR as Hal! I've been on the cartoons for so long I had the military seriousness of John Stewart in my head! Hal might just bring enough cockyness to the group and I think it's needed, to have that type of character around kept the JL grounded. There was even an episode where they say Flash is their conscience.

Great interview! Not the description I was expecting but I'm really into what he meant about combining those three elements. Something new and interesting, that's got my attention already.

@Shaman
Great sketch! Haven't seen any of those bad boys in a long time! :)

This forensic aspect should make the film less "kiddie", which I believe will make it an awesome film. Phsycological and scientific.

AverageCitizen99- Thanks bud! Click on it to see more ;)

Ron- Yeah, if Hal was as serious as John Stewart from the cartoons, then yes i would totally agree with you that Wally would be needed! But since Ryan plays Hal and the character is also known to be funny/cocky in the books as well as in First Flight, i think Wally would be a funny bone overload :)

As for Castlevania, IMHO it surpasses Symphony of the Night as being the best Castlevania ever!!! They nailed the whip weilding aspect of the belmont character to perfection!!! The story is gripping and the settings are breathtaking!!! The voice cast is nothing short of astonishing and they have incorporated so many fantasy realm aspects in the game, and it feels right! My only pet peeve is that the vampires in this game don't play an as important part as say... the lycans would. They all share the spotlight. They used to be the very soul of the games but it doesn't break it for me here. The important thing is that they are still there in all their glory! And the game as a whole is EPIC!!! :))

Man i can't believe you got BOTH games for your birthday!!! That's AWESOME :)) So, is Vegas better that 3???

LEEE- LOL It's not his birthday, i just granted his wish so to speak LOL

I think the Green Lantern movie is the key in future projects based on DC characters the lesser knowns at least.
If The Flash movie does get made I'm confident, based on what Marc Guggenheim has said, that it will kick MAJOR a$$.
Oh, and Bradley Cooper for Barry Allen/The Flash

Shaman - my birthday was only two days ago so I'm hardly into New Vegas. So far I'd say it's essentially the same as F3, just tweaked and improved here and there. It's a new location, new story (people say it's better but I've only just started) and you have new upgrade options on new weapons. I'd say the difference is similar to the difference between Assassins Creed and AC2. Same thing, just another rung up on the ladder and if a friend was to buy one game in the series you'd recommend the newer over the older.

I personally think they need a 6 member Rogues. The Flash's power is being very fast.Wouldn't you need a group of villains to actually pose a challenge?

Yay! I'm super excited about a live action Flash movie! I was just watching my DVDs of the show last night. As good as that show was for 1990, with a ginormous movie budget the possibilities for this movie are endless. I think I'm still even a little bit in denial about the Green Lantern movie, but I know on opening day I'm gonna have goosebumps the size of golf balls! And the closer a Flash comes to being a reality, I just get more excited every day. It's going to be so refreshing to see other DC superheroes given the big screen treatment other than Supes and Bats (as much as I love them). I really hope this means that some day I'll be able to watch my beloved Justice League (Greatest. Team. Ever.) on the silver screen. I think I'm gonna shit a blue streak (or would it be red in this case?) when I'm finally sitting in a dimmed theater about to watch the Flash! Fanboy wet dream over (for now...).

I'M GONNA GO ON A TANGENT HERE! WHY IS THAT DC COMICS AND WARNER BROS. REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE CREATORS OF THEIR CHARACTERS. I GUARANTEE THAT JOHN BROOME AND GIL KANE WILL NOT GET CREDIT FOR CREATING HAL JORDAN WHEN THE GREEN LANTERN COMES OUT NEXT YEAR. YOU WON'T SEE A
"BY" LINE ON THE OPENING CREDITS. THAT CHAPS MY HIDE. IT SHOWS A LACK OF RESPECT FOR THE CREATORS. THAT'S WHY I CHEERED WHEN MARV WOLFMAN AND GENE COLON SUED TO GET THEIR DUE RESPECT FOR CREATING BLADE. THE SAME WILL BE DONE FOR THE BARRY ALLEN VERSION OF FLASH. WILL GIL KANE, JOHN BROOME AND ROBERT KANIGHER GET CREDIT FOR CREATING HIM? THAT IS ONE QUESTION I WOULD ASK THE HIGHER UPS AT WARNER BROS. GIVE THE PEOPLE THEIR RESPECT AND THEIR HEIRS DESERVE ROYALTIES. STOP GYPIN' PEOPLE AND COMPENSATE THEM OR THEIR RELATIVES FOR THEIR CREATIONS... WHAT SAY YOU PANEL?

MatchesMalone - 10/27/2010, 2:19 PM
@Bryanferryfan- I think it would be great to see the creators get credit for their characters. You always see Seigel and Schuster, Bob Kane, and William Moulton Marston, but give credit where credit is due on ALL of your characters, DC, not just the Holy Trinity.

Commented on Wolvie's article already. But doubled news from different sources is encouraging. I don't think he's blowing smoke the way Millar does (going around and talking about subjects that have no support).

thinks of 45 years ago, when I was 7 and my older brother give me his collection of comic books before going to Vietnam, sure Supes and Bats were my heroes, but GL and Flash were favorites, loved the Flash show straight out, and am waiting with anticipation for the GL and Flash Movies

Pine would be a good choice. I wouldn't mind checking it out if he plays Barry.

Question now is will they use more than one villain? You'll have Capt Cold but who else? Mirror Master? Gorilla Grodd? I think they should use the Jay Garrick's main villain the Shade. That could add a "Dark Knight" feel to the film which would be awesome.
