Jeffrey Dean Morgan Talks The Losers, Watchmen, Lobo And Supernatural

Jeffrey Dean Morgan gives his thoughts on The Losers, Watchmen, Lobo, Supernatural and being a leading man.

SHH sat down with Jeffrey Dean Morgan recently on the set of The Losers to talk about the movie. However the conversation quickly expanded to Watchmen. Morgan also mentions he is interested in the part of Lobo, and a possible return to Supernatural.

This from SHH....

Q: Tell us a little about the character.

Morgan:
Frank Clay is a special forces colonel and it's about this group of guys who kind of get set up and it's the story of revenge and I'm the leader of this group. There's a lot of kicking ass. A lot of explosions. A lot of fights. A lot of all the stuff that we go to movies for. What this is is Joel Silver doing what Joel Silver became Joel Silver for doing with the "Die Hards" and the "Predators." It's very much a movie reminiscent of those old kind of action movies. There's some tongue-in-cheek humor and a little sex. All that stuff that we like. All the stuff I like.

Q: Coming off of "Watchmen," how is this character similar or different to playing the Comedian?

Morgan:
This guy has a real, actually much better sense of humor than the Comedian did. He's not nihilistic. It's completely different. This is much lighter. A much lighter load for me. There's also kind of room for me to interpret this as a project where, in "Watchmen," you had to - look, I was playing the Comedian in the most revered comic book ever written. I was confined to that. In this, I could fine-tune a lot of what I thought Frank Clay is and get to play with it a lot more. In "Watchmen" I didn't want to change an ounce of the dialogue. For this, I could play around and have more fun. It's more freedom as an actor to just mess around with stuff. It's very refreshing.

Q: In the comic book, Clay is kind of the guy who takes the sh*t with Max most personally. How do you work in being the leader and the guy who has to pull things together for everyone else?

Morgan:
As a character? He does take the stuff with Max exceedingly hard. Harder than everyone else. He probably makes a lot of bad decisions along the way. I think a lot of this movie has to do with Clay not coming to terms with the fact that he's not doing what's best for his team.

Q: Coming off of "Watchmen," were you concerned about doing another graphic novel adaptation?

Morgan:
No, I love it. We talked briefly about that. There's so many people now. It's kind of an untapped world, this comic book world. I read the same scripts over and over again and comic books are just apt. There's this big, wide universe out there. If you've seen the stuff that has come out and the stuff that they're making, it's a trend that's going to continue for a while. I'm happy to be in this world. I'm loving it. I love this. I could do comic book movies forever.

Q: Are there any other comic book properties that you have your eyes on?

Morgan:
You know, they're making "Lobo" right now. That would be cool. "Lobo" would be very cool. I don't think that I'm as big as Lobo is, but if you could, like, transplant Mickey Rourke's body on my head, that would be just great. But I don't know. It's an untapped world for me as well. Every time I kind of hear about something I go out and get the book or I look it up on one of your guys' sites. We'll see. You're always looking for material that's kind of smart and fun and this seems to be where it is right now. The studios are really gravitating towards it. More than I've ever seen them gravitate towards anything in a long time. Comic books are really the thing right now and I don't see that going away for at least the next couple of years.

Q: Well, you do have an in with Joel Silver doing this and doing that.

Morgan:
That's true. And I think that Akiva Goldsman is doing it as well. So I do have an in. I'll be elbowing somebody soon..

Q: Do you have any plans to go back to "Supernatural" or are you too busy with films?

Morgan:
I don't know. I just read somewhere that [Eric] Kripke wants me back. That guy, I think he's probably lying, but if it is, in fact, their last year, I'd like to come back. If it really is going to be cancelled after this year, I'd like to come back. I've been saying for the last four years that that storyline got cut out too soon. I'd love to go back for at least one episode or something. I love those guys. I love Jared and Jenson so much. We'll see. No one has contacted me.

Q: I've heard that he's planning on wrapping up the arc that started with season one this season and possibly doing a new kind of thing.

Morgan:
. I heard that, too. Getting new actors and everything. Jared and Jenson wouldn't even be in it. Just to fulfill his seven years. I don't know if that's even allowed and, by the way, I can't imagine Warner Bros. saying,"Yeah, that's cool. You can get rid of Jared and Jenson." They were going to, like, take on secondary characters, maybe. I just don't see that happening. If you take out Jared and Jenson, you're going to lose 90 percent of your audience, probably. I can't imagine them doing that, but it makes for a great radar if you say that kind of stuff. I can't imagine that. Warner Bros. is just like, "Yeah, whatever dude. We'll see you next year." But yeah. I'd love to go back. I don't know how I'd find the time, but we'll see.

He was always one of the best parts of Supernatural and it's a damned pity that he was only really around for two seasons...it would be brilliant to see him come back this year though to finish off the story that has been building up right from the very first episode! Great find HAWKS! :)

Lobo = f-yes... JDM for Lobo would be cool but how about Steve Austin? Now before you cast doubt, Stone Cold has alot of badassery about him as well as thick accent which is how I always thought Lobo would sound... Ech nevermind JDM would be way better....

I think Durand and JDM are both on about even ground in terms of Lobo. JDM would give the best performance definitely, and looks more like the character, but Durand is younger, taller, in better shape, and is still a very good actor in his own right. I'd be more than satisfied with either of them.
DogsOfWar
DogsOfWar - 3/25/2010, 8:19 PM
JDM is one of the go to guys for CBM characters. I can't even recall how many times he has been fancasted for someone.

Lobo would be an outstanding choice BTW.

Steve Austin playing Steve Austin would make it the six million dollar ham.

He would be great as LOBO...I think he could bulk up for the role. If that is his main concern. I loved Watchmen.

Definetly Mr. Morgan for Lobo!

He was decent in Supernatural. I think the character was too one-dimensional for him to use his acting skills to their full potential, but he shined bright in Watchmen. If he can portray every character as well as he interpreted the Comedian, then I hope to see him around a lot more often.

Thanks Hawksblueyes.

Nah he can't be Lobo because people would get confused and think he was The Comedian with white face paint or something..cos The Comedian was also in a comic, and he played him in a movie. Confusion.

In my researches and studies of the human condition and in particular the fascination with the pictographs known as "comic books," and the art form of "film." I feel I must say, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is one of the few "Man's Man" archetypes left in Hollywood.

It's weird going to a post where people are talking about casting and LEEE isn't posting up pictures and glitter words.

I for sure want to see him back on Supernatural. I don't know what they'll do with a sixth season. I kind of feel like they're pushing it with their current season. They're beginning to make mistakes.

Really? I love this current season. My favorite so far to be honest. And I do agree I wish JDM would come back also. His storyline with the boys seemed too short.

No contest =

KEVIN DURAND:

Although i'm sure JDM would be good but i'm SICK of all these actors taking MULTIPLE CBM ROLES!

I told you RYAN REYNOLDS was the start of it, now CHRIS EVANS has taken over and probably JDM ....

Its boring and LAZY of HOLLYWOOD keep casting the same actor for CBM roles!!!

Its got to stop or next we'll be having ED NORTON for HANK PYM or BRANDON ROUTH for BATMAN etc etc etc!

Damn LAZY, theres lots of actors out there that are amazing actors and deserve the chance to shine in a CBM!!!

Great actor, awesome guy. If they keep finding good CBM roles for this guy, I say let him do as many as he wants. I'd rather have someone who is a good actor and passionate for these roles than some pretty boy flavor of the month doing it for the paycheck and phoning it in.

Leee, I love ya, buddy, but your arguement about this subject just strikes me as unimportant in the grand scheme of things. I'm all for different actors that you wouldn't think of getting CBM roles. I mean that's how we get the Heath Ledgers and RDJs. But if someone enjoys doing it and is good at it, why not?

The last part about Supernatural is totally wrong. Eric Kripke is stepping down from the show and Jensen and Jared for comfrimed for season 6. I don't know about season 7 but they are on board for the 6th season...even though they both want out of there contracts with the show.

And i think JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN would make a kick ass Wolverine...he's not 6'5 and sings and dances on broadway and host the Tony awards..!!!!

And isn't this movie The loser a rip off of the A -Team basically ??
