Idris Elba's Agent reacts To Heimdall Casting

An article about his casting, fans reaction and his agent reaction:

A very interesting articles about the various reaction fans for the Elba casting about the races, but also Elba reaction himself and his publicist about the comment of his client.

However, his publicist flatly dismissed any suggestion of a row between fans and film-makers, telling the Guardian that the actor was merely being mischievous. "There's no controversy," said Rupert Fowler. "Idris was being flippant in the [TV Times] interview."

His UK agent, Roger Charteris, said Elba had chosen the role of Heimdall on artistic rather than political grounds. "He just wanted to do the movie and work with Kenneth Branagh.

"He liked the script and he liked the movie and he had always wanted to work with Kenneth Branagh. It wasn't like a statement: 'Oh, I'm going to do this.' It's always a purely creative decision."

"It's different for Gods"

That's what I always think when I hear someone complain about Heimdall being black and not looking like Sif.I was reading a recent issue of Marvel's Dark Avengers:Ares miniseries, where he was training a group of soldiers.A group of his offspring wanted revenge and attacked him.One of his children was a horse god/demigod.When a soldier said, "One of your sons is a horse?", Ares just replies, "It's different for Gods".

So if a god can have a white child like Phobos and then have a horse, it's not a real stretch to have a black one and a white one.

Elba is just doing his job, leave him alone. Personally I was hoping Tyler Mane would get the part but let's see what happens, Elba is a great actor.

@SirPrize

his not pulling a Sharpton and his not trying to get publicity. he must of been confronted by some racist or he read online i.e. IMDB about some people are upest about a black man playing heimdall.

@Anil Rickly

he still could play Sif brother since we dont even know Sif and Heimdall parents also they could be adopted. you got to remember Kenneth Branagh always cast people of different race anyway have you seen "Much Ado About Nothing" directed by Kenneth Branagh. it had Denzel Washington and Keanu Reeves as brothers.

Jaimie and Elba are contracted to not give any info about the storyline on twitter she cant tell you if they are siblings or not. she can say she finished filming or say her costume for thor is amazing but can not give you too much info before she get sue or blacklisted.

Kenneth Branagh wont say anything cause his busy filming Thor. if they not brother and sister well thats not a big deal cause in Norse mythology they aint brother and sister the first place.

What does it matter? They're Gods. Most mythic dietys have appeared in numerous forms to include bird, beast and fish. They have appeared also in human forms not their own. I don't see this as an issue if the actor does the role justice.

Why does it matter so much to people?!? Eartha Kitt played Freya in Terry Jones's "Erik the Viking." The actual Vikings traded amber with the cultures of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, so were no strangers to people with brown skin. Jack Kirby himself was a pioneer in introducing black heroes in his various groups of alien gods for Marvel and DC. Get over it.

Also, there is only one race, Homo sapiens sapiens.

Absolutely correct. Loki frequently shape-shifted into various forms in the "Edda," often as a woman.

I like him as an actor but a black viking still makes no sense. And i know its fantasy but even for fantasy it still makes no sense. Thats like having a samurai played by an italian guy

Tom Cruise played a white samurai.

AngusMac
AngusMac - 5/4/2010, 11:42 PM
Tom cruise played an american soldier sent to japan where he learned the way of the samurai. Daniel Day Lewis played Natty Bumpo "Hawleye" from James Fenimore Cooper's Last of the Mohicans, a European colonist and trapper who was blood brothers with the two Mohigan Indians and adopted many of their customs. Those two examples dont work. Nice try though, what else you got? ;)
AngusMac
AngusMac - 5/4/2010, 11:56 PM
that is to say that in the Last Samurai they did not try to pass off Tom Cruise as Japanese (which would have looked as ridiculous as Idris Elba playing a viking god) or Daniel Day Lewis as a Mohican native tribes member (which, again, would look as ridiculous as Idris Elba playing a norse god).

Dude its a skin color who cares? And whos to say that there couldnt be a black norse god? Have you ever seen path finder? Karl Urban played a viking born indian. He was born of viking decent but was raised by indians. He was a white indian. And what about all the stories about Zeus in greek mythology. He was constantly going to earth and getting it on with mortals. If you apply that to norse mythology a black norse god is believeable. I mean come on Odin addopted Loki whos father was the Frost Giant Laufey. I just think its very narrow minded and ignorant to think that any of these gods could not be of a different skin color than white. As long as he does a good job playing the character i could care less what skin color he is.
KiddSoul

AngusMac : None of us seen the film yet so we really can't say how ridiculous it will look. Thor does not look ridiculous neither the Destroyer. I wonder what Heimdall will look like? I can't speak out of assuming that he will look ridiculous for I know nothing about the film. Only the two pictures Marvel gave us which is "so far,so good" ok!

This movie is incomparable to movies already made! I'll save my judgement til I see heimdall's picture.

Also they are not vikings, though loosely based on them. They are Asgardian beings in another cosmic realm that is what they are in the comics. They are loosely and heavily based on Norse Gods.

KiddSoul
KiddSoul - 5/5/2010, 3:25 PM
I trust Kenneth Branagh vision in what he's trying to do. I sense he is trying to bridge the Asgardian world in the comics with our world. How will that ever be believable if all the Asgardian beings are caucasian? To explain that extradimensional world with Earth, I think Kenneth(as well as Marvel) felt it necessary to change the character's race.

I feel that Asgard indeed has a guy in that realm that looks like me...it's Heimdall baby! Or maybe even Asian it's Hogun! Asgard is indeed the color of humanity...

Now how can anyone be angry or directly belligerent at Marvel or Kenneth? Decisions are to be made and I am not making them nor anyone who is angry about it. I think its wise if they see something in Idris. Obviously its more than his skin color thats for sure. Alright let's move on...
AngusMac
AngusMac - 5/7/2010, 5:05 AM
Hi Kiddsoul
I'm not angry or belligerant i just think that a Black Viking makes no sense and is going to look kind of silly on film. If they felt that they need a more culturally diverse cast then they could have introduced a member or members of one of the African Pantheons that are in the comics. Or they could have introduced a character or characters when Thor gets to Earth. Either way both of these methods would make more sense than a Norse god with a deeper tan than all the rest. Personally i hope i am wrong and he nails the part, and meshes well with the movie and allows moviegoers to emerse themselves in the story. Unfortunately i dont think that is going to happen.
KiddSoul
KiddSoul - 5/7/2010, 8:58 PM
Yeah you have every right as a Thor fan or Norse aficionado to point that casting out. Fortunately I think it will be more amazing than any negativity thrown at the idea of it. Especially with a 200 million dollar budget, great director and writers. It can't get any fortunate than that. Maybe it can with Disney's financial backing! Think outside the box! ;)

Doesn't matter what colour he is.He's a great actor. And he's playing a god.Surely a god can appear as any colour he likes.I think they've just picked the best actor for the role. There should be more bravery like this in Hollywood.

Oookay...
I have to give my opinion too.
I have nothing against the actor.
Yes , originally, Thor was a red head guy (in "real" mythology).
Yes I was first shocked by a black Kingpin (in such a bad movie as Johnson's Daredevil, in my opinion) but it can make sense and I got used to it (the black Kingpin, not the Daredevil movie)
Neither I was shocked by a Samuel L. Jackson 's Fury (the Ultimate's Fury was drawned from the actor).
Yes, native american marvel characters were represented (I guess Warpath and Mirage had a cameo in X2) and a non asian Yinseng in Iron Man tickled me but the action taking place nowadays (and not in Viet Nam, why not...?) , and Hogun looking as Attila is close to my own interpretation of what could be the dark character.
But Heimdall, a Norse god, well known......black....seriously.....?
Odin had several "unions", why not Heimdall's father making it with a black beauty, but that's....something's disturbing me, according to my vision of the asgardians in the Marvel universe.
And I remember too Asgardians beeing surprised seeing the New mutant Sunspot, calling him the shadowskin (I don't remember if it was due to his skin or due to his power).
I don't know what to think about the movie, anyway....
Brannagh seemed to be the right person, actors look good, I find costumes are....quite "power rangering" though, and seeing Thor in a t-shirt and hairs on his face reminds me more of Thunderstrike/Masterson and not Don Blake.....
Have you ever seen Thor in civilian dressing? And I mean Thor, not Blake.....
Something tells me he won't fly with Mjolnir, that there will be no Blake, and that the accent wuold be great fun.
Let's see....
But as someone said:

" Someone showed me this, so i thought i should share it: Don't know what the Marvel mythology says, but according to the real mythology; Heimdal wasn't a Asgardian, he was regarded as one but he really wasn't. The name Heimdal comes from; Heim = World and dallr = tree, etymologi tells that the name refer to "Yggdrasil", the worldtree, a Norse/Viking definition of the universe/Milky Way, if you like he was "the god of heaven". Heimdal was not Odins son, thereby not a Asgardian, ge was instead son to the "nine mothers", they are thought to represent the nine worlds of the nordic cosmology. He observed the world and always carried a horn in which to blow when Ragnarok approached. Well; so if they are free to make anyone of the gods politically correct, Heimdal would be a perfect candidate. "

Oh, I forgot....I'm black........lol

@ Phook: Very very well said my friend.
I was unaware of Heimdall's history as per traditional norse mythology. Thanks for the knowledge. I that description, Heimdall need not be Norse.

I am simply exhausted with directors/screenwriters who seem have little knowledge and or respect for 50 + years of history in some cases of some comic books,
"re-imagining" characters, making up stories when they have a huge history to draw from...
If the cast of Thor is truly multi-cultural, "multi-color", terrific. If not, a huge cast of blond haired blue eyed people and one Mr Elba... I need to say it... gonna look a little/a lot out of place.
Don't give a damn to what a bunch of douche bags are complaining about, just make a good movie.
Another interesting thought though: Could we cast Brad Pitt as T'Challa? The Black Panther?
In this bullcrap turned upside down PC world who we cast should not matter right??
@ Phook : I also agree with you when I saw Thor in the t-shirt, I immediately though Thunderstrike! They should have cast a smaller slighter fellow as Don Blake.
And while I got my bitch on, can someone explain why Natalie Portman is in 30 movies this year? Let her go she not talented.
