Stellan Skarsgard Talks About Thor Deleted Scenes, The Avengers, & Thor 2

If you have had the pleasure of viewing the deleted scenes for Thor then you're probably scratching your head at all the great material that didn't make the final cut. Stellan gives his reason why one of those deserving scenes missed the cut.

Thor Deleted Scenes

SHH: Right, you have two deleted scenes on there, so did you and Chris ever get a chance to have a real drinking contest between Sweden or Australia?

Skarsgard: No, I wouldn't do that to him. He was working so hard. I wouldn't destroy his body to do that. (chuckles)

SHH: There's another scene where your character almost gets killed, so do you know why Kenneth took that out of the movie? It's a very poignant scene.

Skarsgard: I don't know. I think he eventually had too much material, but it's a layered process, and you never know exactly what you will need at the end when you put it together. Scenes that are very good can harm the film if they come in the wrong place of the story, so it's a very delicate work deciding what to keep in the film or not, and I don't think it was because the scene was bad that he took it out.

SHH: No, not at all, which is why I was surprised it didn't make it into the movie.

Skarsgard: I don't think you want the audience to suddenly start worrying about whether Selvig will die or not in the end fight there.

The Avengers

SHH: It's an interesting tag scene because we don't know if you were possessed by Loki or if he was just looking on, so before shooting that scene, did you know what part your character would play in "Avengers"?

Skarsgard: I knew what was going to happen later when we did the tag scene.

SHH: So are you just working as a scientist in the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier then?

Skarsgard: No, but we shot a lot in the desert and we did a rooftop in New York in the desert outside Albuquerque, so you shoot in the most strange ways. We shot in Albuquerque, we shot in Cleveland and now we're in New York.

SHH: You're involved in all of those scenes? I thought you just did a couple days.

Skarsgard: No, I'm flying in and out, a couple of days here, a couple days there. It's not a big role but it's pivotal.

Thor 2

SHH: What about the "Thor" sequel? Have you heard whether or not they're going to bring you back for the sequel yet. Earth plays such a big part of the first movie but the movie ends with him in Asgard.

Skarsgard: No, well, they mentioned it, and they've talked to my agent about it, but I haven't seen any script or anything yet.

I am shocked at how many deleted scenes in the Thor DVD release are so good. I can't remember another movie's deleted scenes that seemed so essential to the story, or would've just been great character builders, like this film has.

I'd say the most unbelievable cut was the Loki and Thor scene when they are playfully bantering back and forth like real brothers. That scene seems light and fluffy, but it actually gives some meat to the battles later on. When I watched the theatrical release I did feel a lack of a sibling bond, and that deleted scene would of cured that.

Even the drinking scene with Stellan and Thor was something I had wished they had shown when I watched the film the first time. I just hope the DVD has a feature that allows me to include all the deleted scenes into the film.

The Thor sequel shouldn't be on earth at all. It needs to be in Asgard. His earth time can be had in The Avengers.

I completely agree... But with him possibly being in Thor 2, doesn't that make you believe it'll be part Midgard at least?

agreeing to however many people say it.......I hope Thor 2 is much more than 50% on Asgard. tons of great material and foundation there, but lots of room for improvement. Marvel is in a similar position with Thor to how they WB was with Batman Begins, and that turned out damn well!

From watching the majority of deleted scenes(most of which were VERY good and could have fleshed out the characters MUCH more...poor Rene Russo), the ONLY reason they were left out is because these PU***Y F***IN producers get SKIRRRED that us moviegoers don't have the patience to sit in our seats 5 minutes past the two hour mark. Furthermore, the shorter a film is(even by minutes), the more showtimes during the day and night these theatres can show it. It's ALL about the friggin' money, and VERY little about 'creative compromise. Ever notice in films before the DVD revolution any 'extra' footage from films were either outtakes or a few random ideas the director had on the fly? Now, the FIRST thing they scream at us when the DVD comes out is "...NOW with TWO DAYS of EXTRA footage!!"

It's almost like the movie itself is just the FIRST part of some TWO part tease to get as much money outta us as possible. It's expensive ENOUGH to just go to SEE a movie nowadays...add in food, a crappy 3D option, an overpriced DVD a few months later and soon, yer gettin calls from debt collectors about the small loan you had to take out to SEE 4 or 5 movies during the summer!

Stanley Kubrick was right, and 2001 warned how technology could be used for sin in the future, in this case, greed. Back in the day, you went to see a movie 20 times because the next time you saw it might not be until years later when HBO got it or it MIGHT be released on VHS! Now that we know it'll be out a school semester later, the urgency to make it epic and get it definitively right the first time has fallen by the wayside. The fans and the art of the genre itself loses.

As a final point, I read years ago that the producers of Goodfellas wanted Scorsese to take out the scene where Tommy kills Spider not because it was too violent, but because it was one of the unneccessary scenes that made the movie too long. Scorcese rightly defended the scene, explaining that it was for the dramatic purpose of showing not only Henry how sociopathic he was, but the audience. Can you IMAGINE how less effective the point of a classic movie like that would have been if the studioclods would have gotten their greedy way?

I say all this to say to Mr. Whedon, PLEASE let it all hang out for Avengers. Get it right the first time, TAKE yer time, and make the THEATRE version the one you'd want buried in a time capsule as 'Movie History's Best SuperHero Movie To Date'.

In the leaked script Selvigg and Thor had a bar fight, also.

That's why he says "he drank, he fought, he made his ancestors proud".

Thor was a perfect panel to panel comic adaptation to screen. There's no need for criticism with this particular film.

If we had the deleted scenes included in the film, it would take Thor about 15 minutes to get to his coronation.

On a related note (haha I crack myself up...) it'd be fun to see Alexander Skargård play Balder. Let him be a true Viking god :P

I was shocked at how many scenes took place in Asgard. From the trailers, it looked like it would be all of about the first 20 minutes of the film and the rest on Midgard. But the sequel would definitely need to take place more on Asgard.
