THOR Actress Natalie Portman Says She's Open To Reprising Her Role As Jane Foster In The MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is filled with supporting characters we'll more than likely never see again, but as it turns out, we might not have seen the last of a Natalie Portman's Jane Foster...

It has become a common state of affairs in the MCU for supporting players to be phased out, or set up, but never return, be it due to character or actor issues. Tim Blake Nelson's The Leader was teased at the end of The Incredible Hulk but was never heard from again , and Hugo Weaving seemingly closed the door on reprising his role as Red Skull, for example.

One character that we thought we'd never see again due to an actor's less than enthusiastic experience working with the franchise is Thor's love interes,t Jane Foster. But that might not be the case any more!

Natalie Portman reportedly refused to return for reshoots on the 2013's Thor: The Dark World and neither she nor Kevin Feige and the folks at Marvel have really had anything substantial or positive to say about one another since. With her character quietly being phased out to the point that when in 2016 Portman was asked about reprising her role in the then yet to be released Thor: Ragnarok by the Wall Street Journal, she stated:

As far as I know, I’m done. I don’t know if, maybe, one day they’ll ask for an Avengers 7 or whatever. I have no idea! But as far as I know I’m done.
Has she sofened her stance on returning since? Well, asked about ever reprising her role in the comic book franchise during an interview for her upcoming film Alex Garland's Annihilation, Portman had this to say:

I’m completely open to everything, but I have no news about that. (Laughs)

While this is certainly not an indication that she will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with her hat thrown into the ring it could well become a reality - especially with the recent anniversary and legacy sensibilities the series of films has switched into as it leads into its "finale". This franchise culmination approach has seen in recent years the surprise return of William Hurt's General Ross in Captain America: Civil War and Gwyneth Paltrow also returned from her extended leave of absence as Pepper Potts for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

What do you think? Would you like to see Portman and Foster return? Or has the ship sailed on that relationship and character? Are you still annoyed at the way the character was treated in THOR: The Dark World? Leave your thoughts below.

I like Natalie Portman but don't really care for her Jane Foster. What a dilemma.

Rewatching Phase One, I've always wondered why Selvig was used as the scientist studying the Tessaract, instead of Jane. It could have been an interesting dynamic having Loki brainwash her, and Thor having to deal with that. Although that could needlessly complicate things.

@BlindWedjat - thought I read something about Whedon not wanting to bring any of the love interests from the solo movies into the film, cos it might diverge into their individual lives/stories when it didn't need to or something. Obviously Pepper ended up appearing but apparently that was one of Downey's special requests, which Whedon went through with.

@BlindWedjat - You're so right. Jane being brainwashed would have been much more powerful and motivating, and given her a lot more reason to be pissed in the Thor sequel.

(Plus, I'm sure the Stonehenge scene would have been a lot more... erh... nevermind.)

@Kurne - I can see that being a legitimate reason, yeah. The movie would have been complicated as it is.

@Spock0Clock - She should be more important. At least he genius should be. The woman has her own theory for goodness sake.

@Spock0Clock - (And yes I would have been more tolerant of naked Natalie)

My fingers are crossed she does. My only problem with her Jane is that they made her an astrophysicist (which only really served that one movie and seemed a bit too coincidental). But Jane as a paramedic would have been much more grounded and grounding for Thor's time on Earth.

Jane Foster is much more interesting as Thor's ex than she is as a love interest, and the premise of Jane Foster-Cancer-Thor is such an absolutely strong foundation for a film arc. Just a brief stint in the Avengers, or a stand-alone solo film, or as a major supporting character for a Valkyrie movie or a member of a Valkyrie-led Liberators team. We all know that Mjolnir is likely to be coming back, and having it be Jane's for a spell would be a great diversion before the long-term post-Infinity War plans start kicking off.

(Though, I never would have expected Portman to sound potentially more open to returning that Hemsworth, but here we are.)

@Spock0Clock - we seem to be switching Jane articles back and forth... still, I read your pitch for a Jane Foster arc on Jessica Jones, and it would indeed have great potential!

I actually watched Wonder Woman for the first time last night, and while I liked it well enough it really made me wish for another WWII Cap adventure. I always figured that they included that montage bit in the First Avenger to leave room for more 1940’s Cap adventures, but they simply haven’t had the time or need to exploit it.

The MCU really does leave so much potential untapped by being a movie series.

@Chewtoy - Yeah. The best chance to do that was probably related to the Agent Carter show (i.e. the Marvel TV show that had actual buy-in from Feige, the Russos, and Markus/McFeely). But the general whiff on the Howling Commandos doesn't make it all that appealing.

But I'm such a sucker for the old-school comic structure. I would love for Marvel Studios to drop a fifteen minute one-shot into a blu-ray somewhere. It's winter at the Avengers mansion, set sometime before Civil War. A school bus arrives with a few dozen kids from P.S.123 for a tour. They'd won an essay-writing contest about why the world needs protecting, and they get to meet the Avengers. It's all schmaltz, hot cocoa, and Rhodey wearing a fake Santa beard.

And the weather takes a turn for the worst, the roads close, and the kids and their teacher spend the night. Over a crackling fire, Steve settles into an armchair and tells the kids about "a story they don't teach about the war". And they do a five minute flashback scene of Cap, a mysterious fish man, and an android on fire storming a beachhead.

After the lights are out, one of the kids sees the Vision phase through the ceiling to the kitchen, stare into the refrigerator for twenty solid seconds, and then close it and float back upstairs.

There's very much no room for that kind of nonsense in a blockbuster schedule, but this is why I'm so excited to see what "the Next Feige" can do. Whether it's Marvel or otherwise, someone is going to figure out a way to coordinate across platforms to do the big stuff on the big screen, the small stuff on a small screen, and the give room for the weird stuff somewhere. I mean, we got Doctor Strange doing a kid's birthday party for a dumb Kimmel sketch. There's an appetite for the mundane at least when it comes to promotion.

I never hated her character. She wasn’t stand out, but she could’ve been used better. If she came back, it would be interesting to see what they do with her. Not opposed to Jane-Thor, either

Bring back Lady Sif. Her and Thor had better chemistry

If she were to return I would hope they would go with the "Lady Thor" route with her character.

It's a good time to do it. Thor isn't reliant on Mjonir.

They could have Mjonir be re-constructed and appear to Jane. The mystery could be why and how did Mjonir was re-constructed.

Her being a major annoyance in the both more comic-accurate Thor adaptions and her portrayed character an horrendous replacement for the Son of Odin in the current comics make express myself in a negative fashion.

Hope she comes back to MCU.

Oh, and, for you-know-who:

It wasn't entirely her fault how the Jane Foster character turned out. The MCU was lucky to have her, especially at the height of her career. Also, I never felt that she was bitter. It was just a bunch of fans blowing it out of proportion.

Anyways, her re-appearing as Thor's ex would be interesting. She could join SWORD and help discover more cosmic entities. Then, she could become a supporting character for other heroes like Captain Marvel or Nova (much like Karen Page aiding The Punisher). To be honest, I like that idea and I just came up with it on the spot. Do it Feige!

I like when characters are further fleshed out, rather than being thrown in the wayside. General Ross being in Civil War was really cool IMO
