THOR Star Chris Hemsworth Says Martin Scorsese & Quentin Tarantino Are "Two Of My Heroes I Won’t Work With"

Both Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino have said some disparaging things about Marvel movies in the past, which Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth was not pleased to hear...

Several major directors have taken shots at superhero/Marvel movies over the years, but recent comments made by Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino generated a lot of headlines, and one particular MCU actor was left feeling pretty disheartened by what he heard.

During an interview with GQ, Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth was asked about Scorsese and Tarantino's takes on the genre, and had the following response.

“That’s super depressing when I hear that,” said the Aussie actor. “There goes two of my heroes I won’t work with. I guess they’re not a fan of me.”

Scorsese compared Marvel films to theme part rides ("it isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being"), while Tarantino said that, as far as he's concerned, superhero actors aren't movie stars ("Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a zillion times…but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star").

Despite Hemsworth's feeling on the matter, he did add that the filmmakers are "still my heroes," and “in a heartbeat I would leap to work with any of them. But I say it more to the broader opinion around that topic. I don’t think any of us have the answer, but we’re trying.”

“I’m thankful that I have been a part of something that kept people in cinemas. Now, whether or not those films were to the detriment of other films, I don’t know. I don’t love when we start scrutinizing each other when there’s so much fragility in the business and in this space of the arts as it is.”

Hemsworth is certainly not above criticising the MCU, however. When asked about the recent mixed-negative reception to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the actor admitted that he hasn't seen it yet, but based on the trailers alone, he had some ideas about why audiences may not have taken to the threequel.

"That’s the trick: you have to separate all those stories. The moment it’s like [in trailer voice] ‘Your world is in danger, the entire universe!’ It’s like, ‘Yeah, so [it] was the last 24 films.’ It has to become a bit more personal and grounded.”

Hemsworth also weighed-in on Love and Thunder's mixed reception earlier on, and you can find out what he had to say here.

They disregard the genre, so you disregard working with them? My goodness, overreaction much?

@dagenspear - He's saying that they wouldn't work with him because of his involvement in superhero movies, not that he wouldn't work with them.

@dagenspear - Some of the greatest actors and actresses in the game appeared in Marvel movies including Robert Redford and Anthony Hopkins...so I give 2 sh!ts what those directors have to say about superhero movies...keep those damn movies coming and fill those damn seats and keep satisfying the fan base!!!!

“I’m thankful that I have been a part of something that kept people in cinemas.”

Too polite, Chris.

Also, The Irishman released on Netflix.

Never gonna drop that, Marty.

Scorsese's statements were poorly worded but greatly taken outta context. He was talking about how these movies were focus tested and made likable for mass consumption, and he doesn't think movies should be that way. Nothing controversial there.

@CoHost -

Respectfully, they were not taken out of context. They were made during a time were Scorcese was forced into a limited theatrical release for his latest movie, compromising by releasing it widely on a streaming platform instead.

@CoHost - When he called them "theme parks", he wasnt saying that as a bad thing, but just as a definition, the genre (for the most part) has become that, you cant look me in the eye and tell me things like Dr Strange 2 or Black Adam are actual MOVIES.
Martin was 100% on point, and you shouldnt be ashamed if you enjoy "theme parks", just dont make us pretend they are real movies.

@TheHumanSpider2 -

Doctor Strange 2 and Black Adam were filmed, distributed, and projected on theatres. Doctor Strange 2 and Black Adam are, by definition, movies.

Similarly, The Wolf Of Wall Street is a source of several moments that can be misunderstood, simplified, taken out of context and dumbed down as plebian memes, providing shallow joy and quick consumption. In that sense, this movie can be seen as a theme park.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Yeah man, Inception totally felt like a roller coaster ride, it was like I closed my eyes and I was dreaming. Totally a theme park movie, not a ounce of cinema, surely.

@TheHumanSpider2 -

Just like with every inferior peasant's movie that is somehow an insult to Marty's precious golden halls, The Wolf Of Wall Street is distributed through certain companies under a certain financial fee, and in order to be experienced there needs to be a purchase; either for a theatre ticket, or for a digitial or physical copy of its home media.

TLDR: The Wolf Of Wall Street is a product.

@CoHost - Oh, give me a break. He said they aren't cinema and instead they are "theme park rides". That is not just controversial, that's a stupid and uncalled for thing to say. And he had a lot of opportunity to correct himself and he only doubled down because that is very much what he meant to say. He is out-of-touch and refusing to go with time, which is not rare for a man his age.

@TheHumanSpider2 - "you cant look me in the eye and tell me things like Dr Strange 2 or Black Adam are actual MOVIES."

*looks you in the eye*

Of course they are movies, you snob! They consist of 24 frames per second that appear moving to the human eye and tell a story with a beginning, middle and end. That is all a movie has to do to in fact be a movie.
The word "movie", just like the word "art", does not describe a level of quality, but simply the result of an artistic process. And saying that some movies aren't "cinema", even though they clearly play in cinemas, is pretentious gatekeeping that should be beneath a supposed master of his craft.

I'm sure that both Quentin and Marty where both frothing at the mouth to work with multiple time Oscar nominated beefcake Chris hamsworth, they're both no doubt in shambles after hearing this...

Also he'd sign the contract before it hit the table if any of them asked his one note ass to be in their movie, Im sure he could play the guy who gets his head squished in a vice in Casino or maybe the vice itself.

@FriendoGhus - Let's list the Oscar winning actors that have appeared in Marvel movies that these two haters are talking about;

Brei Larson, Cate Banchett, Natalie Portman, Lupita Nyong'o, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tommy Lee Jones, Jeff Bridges, Forest Whitaker, Tilda Swinton, Robert Redford, Jamie Foxx, Matt Damon, William Hurt, Marisa Tomei and sorry to say Angela Bassett was nominated though...now some may have also been nominated only or won Emmys but these movies qualify as art and the superhero movie haters are just gonna have to hate!!!

@FriendoGhus - Hemsworth’s statement about not diminishing the already limited lexicon of the artistic space provided FAR more grace and truth on the current state of cinema than either Scorcese or Tarantino on this matter. Perhaps a little dignity and respect is more in order than ridiculous basement jabs 🤷‍♂️

Chris' career is doing fine without them honestly. I may not like everything he's done but he is a charismatic actor.
