THOR Star Chris Hemsworth Blasts Actors Who've Criticized The MCU After Appearing In Movies That "Didn't Work"

After recently hitting back at directors who've slated superhero movies, Chris Hemsworth is now calling out actors who have been critical of the MCU after appearing in movies that "didn't work."

Chris Hemsworth is not here for any MCU hate!

The Thor star recently responded to major film directors - including the likes of Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Francis Ford Coppola - who have shared a negative opinion of comic book movies (more specifically, how the likes of Marvel Studios' output dominates the marketplace).

“It felt harsh, and it bothers me, especially from heroes. It was an eye-roll for me, people bashing the superhero space,” Hemsworth told The UK Times. “Those guys had films that didn’t work too — we all have. When they talked about what was wrong with superheroes, I thought, cool, tell that to the billions who watch them. Were they all wrong?”

“Cinema-going did not change because of superheroes, but because of smartphones and social media," he added. "Superhero films actually kept people in the cinemas during that transition and now people are coming back. So they deserve a little more appreciation.”

Now, the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga star has turned his attention to actors who were critical of Marvel Studios movies or their MCU experience after appearing in projects that may not have worked.

“It’s, like, ‘They’re films that are successful — put me in one. Oh, mine didn’t work? I’ll bash them,’” Hemsworth said. “Look, I grew up on a soap opera. And it used to bother me when actors would later talk about the show with guilt or shame. Humility goes a long way. One of the older actors on Home and Away said, ‘We don’t get paid to make the good lines sound good, but to make the bad ones work.’ That stuck with me."

The Aussie actor didn't name anyone specifically, but The Times mentioned Idris Elba and Christian Bale - who have both featured in Thor movies alongside Hemsworth - as examples.

“But hey, it’s all a lesson,” Hemsworth continued. “And if I ever went back to [Thor] I’d wonder how we could change it again. But there is a superhero curse in the sense you get pigeonholed, and I’ve felt a little hamstrung with what I could do, so [I] desperately wanted something to scare the shit out of me. And Furiosa did.”

Hemsworth was recently critical of his own performance in Thor: Love and Thunder ("I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing"), so if and when he does reprise the role (we'd be very surprised if he didn't show up in one of or both of the upcoming Avengers movies), we can probably expect a very different take on the Odinson.

Yeah, can't fault anything he says - especially after he was critical of his own performance in Love and Thunder. These movies aren't aiming for high art, but they tend to be held to that standard.

@MarkCassidy Maybe even at a higher standard than other genres, the CBM community tends to get so critical about the smallest things, ranging from character's lines to their height! I remember watching Scorsese The Irishman a while back and watching DeNiro acting like he was twenty years younger with bad CGI. And yet that got great reviews (think even nominated for stuff) whereas a CBM would be dead on arrival.

@Kadara - That's quite an interesting angle.

@Kadara - I will stand by this: I'd rather watch every 2019 CBM (yes, even that disappointing Hellboy) over The Irishman any day. And this is coming from someone who loves Goodfellas & considers The Wolf of Wall Street one of my favorite movies of all time.

It's refreshing to see an actor that's so self aware and down to earth, he comes across as a genuinely nice guy.

I love how respecful he is of the genre, even when admiting its flaws. He's always honest about what didn't work about his Thor movies and takes responsability for it, but he's proud of the work he's done and what it means to people.
Thank you, Chris.

Has Christian Bale slated Love & Thunder?

@Orphix - I remember reading he called the filming monotonous due to blue/green screen.

@Orphix - I think he just said he found working on the movie monotonous or something.

@Orphix - not that I’m aware of

If anything , last I heard was him prasing Taika and how much enjoyed playing the character and doing the movie for his kids.

@Orphix - he did say that he did find the green screen acting to get monotonous but that’s all I could find negative.

@TheVisionary25 - Ah - I did wonder. I remember Idris Elba being critical of The Dark World when he was promoting his Nelson Mandela movie.

@Orphix - if I rember that was moreso him not being given a lot to do then the movie itself but I could be wrong.

Blasts should not be in the article's title. He gave his opinion in the most respectful way possible. People here should take notes.

Bunch of A$$HOLes here.

Hemsworth seems to think he's an actor. He's just a performer like some hack on SNL.

He's absolutely right. Superhero movies never killed cinema. They coincidentally came along around the same era where streaming was taking off thanks to faster internet lines and HD TVs, high-quality home TV Series were blooming, an epidemic effectively curtailed theatre visits, and changing viewer habits were all taking place - and it's my belief that those things are what had the biggest negative effect on cinema. For all we know, tentpole features like the Avengers movies may be the things that kept cinema audiences interested - maybe the decline in cinema-going would have been even worse without superhero films.
elgaz
elgaz - 5/14/2024, 7:37 AM
@elgaz - I also think that having high calibre actors jumping between movies and TV is having an effect - good for TV, not so good for movies. I remember reading an old 1950s interview with an actor who was offered a TV gig when he was down on his luck, but he was holding out for a movie offer - "if people can see me on TV every week at home, why would they pay to come see me in the theatre?". It may not be strictly true, but I can see how it affects their appeal. Would the big Tom Cruise movies be such cinematic events if he was on a Netflix series every week?

When they talked about what was wrong with Hitler, I thought, cool, tell that to the billions who praised him. Were they all wrong?
Polaris
Polaris - 5/14/2024, 7:42 AM
@Spawnnn - Right, because that's the same thing 🙄

If people find enjoyment in a movie are they wrong for it, like it's some moral issue?? Should they feel guilty or what? Don't like it, don't watch it, but don't be a pretentious asshole.

@Polaris - well depends on what you're praising him for. Are you praising him for the holocaust? Or are you praising him for starting the first government mandated break rooms and paid holidays?
