THOR Takes Over $25.5 Million Last Night; Expected To Hit $65 Million By Monday!

After grossing $3.25 million in midnight screenings on Thursday, the latest movie from Marvel Studios has continued to dominate at the box office! Hit the jump for more...

Variety have revealed that Thor opened up on Friday night with $25.7 million from 3,955 locations across the United States. Out of these, 2,737 were in 3D and only 214 in IMAX. The site also report that after the successful midnight screenings on Thursday (which raked in $3.25 million from approximately 1,800 locations) the worldwide total for the movie now stands at more than $130 million.

Apparently, this should see Thor placed behind Spider-Man and Iron Man in terms of its opening weekend, which is expected to surpass anywhere between or above $60 - $65 Million by Monday. Overall, it's looking as if this will be another big success for Marvel Studios and with weeks to go before we know exactly how much it'll make in total, the chances of a sequel to Thor are already high.

With an all star cast which includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Thor is OUT NOW.

ugh, I saw it twice yesterday. SO good!!! the casting / costumes / story / SHIELD integration (so far ahead of IM2)...I'm bummed the numbers aren't projected to be higher. but eh, he's a very little known character starring a non-major star. Sorta risky from a certain point of view I suppose. hopefully it hits $250mil domestic at least and Cap can do the same or better.

Good to see it's doing pretty well. We all know Thor is kind of a tough sell, but it seems their marketing was effective. I think Captain America may have an easier time since the character has better name recognition. Then again, it's facing the challenge of opening the weekend after Harry Potter.

I'm just happy that damn fast and furious movie didn't stay at number one. That would have been embrassing.

I contributed to last nights profit for Thor. I live in America so it was my first time seeing it, and I think it's better than Ironman. Then again, everything seems better (or worse if it's bad) when you see it the first time.

The most important thing is whether it has "legs" or not. If the numbers fall drastically within the next 3 or 4 weeks, then a big opening weekend would have been all for naught.

Thor is tied with Ironman for the best Marvel movie so far.

I have to say 60-65 million is a bit disappointing to me for such a great movie, especially as from the views of co-workers who saw it, it seems to have great mass market appeal.

I think the good word of mouth will make it beat that prediction and get to over 70 million for the weekend and have great legs over the following weeks. It's doing GREAT in my country as in it's second week it's still selling out some showings. Sadly our country is too small to make a big impact on worldwide gross.

It was a really, really good movie, but I don't think it was one of Marvel's best. Surprisingly, it didn't even wow me as much as Fast Five did, but I still loved the movie. And after the credits confirm the Avenger's main villain, hint hint, lol.

Going to see it tonight. Probably gonna see it in 2D though, as I've heard the 3D isn't all that great, and makes some of the action sequences a bit blurry. What do you guys think, 2D or 3D?

Anybody know how this compares to the opening weekends of Iron Man 1 or 2?
