THE SENTRY: Marvel Studios Rumored To Be Developing A Solo Project Following THUNDERBOLTS

We recently learned that The Sentry is likely to be Thunderbolts' big bad, and a new report claims that the movie will be followed by a solo project for the unhinged superhero. More details after the jump.

Earlier this week, a very interesting rumour started doing the rounds suggesting that The Sentry will be Thunderbolts' lead villain. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is said to be responsible for his creation, which would makes sense given her interest in Super Soldiers.

When things inevitably go wrong, the CIA Director assembling an entire team of them might be the only way to take The Sentry down. However, that isn't going to be where Robert Reynolds' story ends. According to a new rumour shared by scooper Daniel Richtman (via The Direct), Marvel Studios is planning a movie revolving around The Sentry.

The MCU's version of the character has been described as "a conflicted and [powerful] villain [akin to an] evil Superman," and a spin-off makes sense on a number of levels.

In the comic books, Robert was a meth addict who broke into a laboratory and ingested an experimental Super Soldier formula. Granted the power of a million exploding suns, the crook became the world's most powerful superhero. However, his fractured mind also created The Void, a threat formidable enough to destroy everything

Even if he is one of the Earth's greatest heroes, The Sentry is also one of the world's greatest dangers. With that in mind, there's plenty here to explore in a future movie or TV series, and we're definitely curious to find out what Marvel Studios has planned for the character on screen.

There's still no word on who will play The Sentry, or even if there's any real merit to this rumour. The only thing making it hard to believe is that if Robert were pitted against that team of Thunderbolts, he'd make short work of them (this is the guy who tore Ares in half, remember).

However, it's possible Marvel Studios plans to depower him somewhat, making him more akin to Captain Marvel. After all, she's supposed to be the MCU's most powerful hero, but still struggled in combat against Thanos.

Would you guys like to see The Sentry star in his own solo project?

Sentry would be a better origin movie instead of a tv series, but I think his character needs a show. There's a difference between say him and Echo, it all comes down to future potential

Ain't no way Disney is sticking with the drug-addict origin story.

Sentry, one of the most underrated heroes out there. Very interesting character.

@Urubrodi - I agree. I never understood all the hate he got.

I did think the explanation for his origin was a little weird. The part that he was a hero in the Marvel Universe for a long time but no one remembers him, including the readers.

But I always liked the idea of him being as powerful as someone like Superman but being terrified of fully unleashing that power.

@CorndogBurglar - Agree with everything, would add that him being basically his own arch nemesis with the Void was always a cool idea in my opinion. Tbh and this part might piss some people off, always thought Kryptonite was a cop out. Superman was way too powerful and they needed an excuse as how someone like Lex Luthor would be able to fight him. With Sentry, the psychological issues and the Void are more interesting. And yeah he is another "copy", but some copies improve on the original.

About ten years ago, RorMachine ran a poll on this site asking people to vote on which character they most wanted to see lead an MCU movie. It was odd at the time, but Sentry had more votes than bigger names like Black Panther and Dr. Strange.

@Jarvisjackrabbit - I am a Sentry fan and I approved that poll... He is such a great character wished they made justice to him.

Wonder if they'll do any of the meta shit.

When I think of The Sentry, I think of the wonderful hoax, rather than the actual character itself.

As Marvel Superman parodies go, I prefer Hyperion. JMS and Gary Frank's Supreme Power is a modern classic, IMO.

I also have to wonder if the Void might become some sort of weapon to utilize against another universe in case of an incursion.

I still hate Sentry with a passion like i used to tho.

I think Sentry works best in a team setting. All the members on edge because they know he can flip out at any moment. Having to talk him down then eventually having to try and take him-Void down.

I thought they were going to slow down on the projects. You know, quality over quantity. Clickbait. It's not a real thing until it is officially announced.

I mainly know Sentry/Void from Siege, and man, what a beast of a character.

I hope he's not revamped too much to fit the general tone of the MCU. I don't expect him to be ripping people in half in a bloody manner, but whatever they do, they must not disappoint with this one.

I like this idea. This could be really good if they don't nerf him too much.

This will never happen, but imagine how insanely great a Sentry/Deadpool throwdown would be.

I want a montage of Sentry digitally inserted into some of the MCU's most notable moments.

@comicfan100 - that would be pretty fun to see. Could easily see him fit in in all of the Avengers movies

I like Sentry, and I think he's a good addition to the MCU. Just think they should wait a little longer. NWO/Thunderbolts should just focus on the Hulks.

As for it being rumoured, this is an easy one. Just say any relatively known superhero is getting a project, and you're probably right.
