THE SUICIDE SQUAD Star Peter Capaldi Talks Possible DOCTOR WHO Return And Whether He'd Join James Gunn's DCU

Peter Capaldi has revealed whether he'd be open to returning as Doctor Who's titular Time Lord following his run as the Twelfth Doctor and expressed an interest in reuniting with James Gunn in the DCU...

Following Matt Smith's youthful Doctor Who lead, Peter Capaldi proved to be a very different Doctor (but more in line with the show's earlier iterations of the Time Lord). Of course, fans quickly fell in love with the Scottish actor's interpretation of the hero and they remain eager to see his Twelfth Doctor back in the Tardis.

Recently, David Tennant made his surprise return to the role for the show's 60th anniversary. By the time all was said and done, a bi-generation meant the Fourteenth and Fifteen Doctors - with the latter played by franchise newcomer Ncuti Gatwa - now co-exist in the universe at the same time...each with their own Tardis!

It was an unprecedented move and, during a recent interview with Forbes (via SFFGazette.com), Capaldi was asked for his thoughts on Tennant's recent return and the franchise's future with Gatwa's Doctor.

"I enjoyed it. I thought it was great and a lot of fun," he said of the recent specials. "It was wonderful, exuberant, and full of life, drama, and monsters. David was wonderful, and Catherine Tate, of course. It's Doctor Who, you know, it's a gas and a good thing in the world."

"It's a nice, fun, exciting thing, and I look forward to the rest of the specials and Ncuti Gatwa coming along. I've met him, and he's very inspiring and charming."

As for whether he'd be open to reprising the role, Capaldi added, "No. I'm a long-standing Doctor Who fan from being a kid. I like the idea that my Doctor is still out there. He's not available to come and be on TV. The real Doctor is not on TV, the real Doctor is out there."

Capaldi played the Doctor across three series and four specials, so it's easy enough to understand why he likely feels he's done all he can with the role. Past Doctors returning is always a tricky thing and, thus far, Tennant is the only one to have successfully done so on multiple occasions.

In the same interview, the actor was asked if he would be open to joining DC Studios' DCU after working with James Gunn on The Suicide Squad. He played the villainous Thinker in that movie and met his maker at Starro's hands.

"Of course, I would, absolutely," Capaldi enthused. "James was lovely; I loved working with him. He creates such a great atmosphere on set and is such a nice person to work with. I honestly think James is gifted, clever, and sharp, but I sometimes feel like he's making a film in his garage."

"He feels like a guy who would go off at the weekend and make these films because he has such enthusiasm and sincerity about them."

"I think that's what makes this work stand out; he means it. He has a meaningful relationship with all these comic book characters; it's not a commercial relationship," he concluded. "He cares about them, and that's wonderful."

Who do you think Capaldi could play in the DCU if not The Thinker?

@bobevanz - I felt like some the writing wasn't great during his tenure, there were some good episodes, but some terrible ones too.

I would love to see Capaldi in Doctor Who or the DCU again , fantastic actor!!.

His Twelfth Doctor felt like the one modern iteration that changed the most through his arc…

He started off stern , alien and kind of a dick due to his internal crisis of being a “good man or not” but as he figured out who he really was again which is “an idiot in a box passing through & helping out “. He embraced that more in Series 9 while Series 10 version felt like a blend of his 8 & 9 personality due to events that had happened prior.

He played it all with gravitas & amplomb and gave me some of my favorite moments of the show so I hope he does change his mind and return one day!!.

Would love to have him in the DCU, but move on from the Thinker. Shoot, could play a Riddler or Shade.

@Arthorious - was just a shame he left that show after season 1. I think it was because of DW

Asking those who have seen the show: where's the best place for a new comer to start? Would i need to watch episode one or is there a season that does a good recap or something?

@Arthorious - I've actually started watching Doctor Who for the first time myself over the past few months (saw a handful episodes as a teenager and it wasn't for me, but I now love the series). I'd start with Christopher Eccleston's run and just follow from there...you could pick a Doctor and just begin with their first series, but I think you'll appreciate it more that way.

@Arthorious -
Best place to start, if you have tolerance for bad CGI and campy acting: Season 1 with Ecclestone.

Best place to start, if you need it a bit modern: Season 5, first Matt Smith episode is a good introduction as well given his history being explained to Amy and the viewer. VFX and camera work also got more high budget.

@Arthorious - For starters you can ALWAYS easily jump in at the start of a new incarnation, every time the Doctor regenerates it is a soft reboot of sorts however in this case as the intro is in the last of the 60th ann. specials then isn't a bad idea to start with those.

New who is way more to modern tastes and easier for non-Brits to get into I would think and there are a fair number of missing episodes from classic who. So for that and other reasons I would never say start with any from classic Dr Who, always would say start with new-Who and the first of those with Eccleston was designed to bring everyone upto speed with the basics as such always a solid idea to watch that one season.

As Tennant is back also makes a lot of sense to continue from there and watch his entire run to understand his character and relationship with Donna and Rose to fully appreciate him in the specials but it shouldn't be considered NEEDED as such, just aids appreciating the specials.

I would likely then go straight from the last episode of the 10th to the specials whilst it is fresh to mind...

...can then go back and watch the rest if you want, Matt Smith was great as the 11th but many increasingly had issue with the writing etc with the 12th and 13th.

If you do want to taste test classic Who, just watch the anniversary ones as in 'The Three Doctors', 'The Five Doctors' and 'Dimensions in Time' the last of which was after the show had ended and was made for Children in Need. It featured the five surviving actors but also had the first two shown using stock footage, if you manage to find that one and watch the other two decade specials then it will give you enough of an idea if you like specific incarnations enough to want to go back that far to watch them at all.

Thing is it is NEVER required to know anything from years back, let alone decades back to understand episodes. They are primarily targeted towards kids, with a view to it being family sat together watching. As in not the sort of stuff for kids that parents have to endure and rather the sort those of any age can enjoy. They are never going to expect a 10yr old for instance to know something that occured in the 80's for instance even if a modern story features elements/characters not touch upon since then or earlier so they always ensure they tell the audience any required knowledge. That is easy for them to do as the companion won't have any knowledge of that past thing either thus ready made excuse for quick exposition or narrated flashback like for instance with the Toymaker which was last seen on TV before I was born and I'm in my 50's.

@Arthorious - I'm gonna be an outlier and say if you wanna get started, just get started now with Ncuti Gatwa's christmas special, the Church on Ruby Road (Doctor Who Special 4 on Disney+). It's designed to be a new jumping off point for Doctor Who, but you'll be waiting a bit for new episodes.

Other wise, I would start out with Series 1 of the 2005 reboot with Christopher Eccleston, and go on from there. Each time the showrunners change (Series 1, Series 5, Series 11, now Season 1), the show allows new viewers to jump in fresh. Some of the lore remains consistent, but the expectation is once you get hooked, you're gonna go backwards and figure out all the lore for yourself.

Fantastic and enigmatic actor, haven’t seen much of his doctor as I stopped watching all of DW religiously with Season 7 (just HATE Moffats writing).
But the episodes I saw of him were neat.

Would be a welcome choice for Alfred, Riddler, Dr. Fate, Nergal or Merlyn.

I wonder if he's specifically refusing to reprise the role for multi-doctor specials or in a special case like David Tennant's Doctor. I mean, I don't think I've ever heard of Capaldi's stance on multi-doctor specials but it would seem that he's not exactly fond of them from what he's saying. If he was a fan of those kind of specials, I'm sure he'd understand how gutted fans are to not expect his return as he would've dealt with during the Five Doctors when Tom Baker didn't return.

I'm still crossing my fingers for a full on Eccleston, Tennant, Smith, Capaldi, Whittaker, and Ncuti special, but with Eccleston's hatred of RTD and Capaldi with no interest in returning, I sadly think the time for it will pass on and all we will have left is David Tennant returning every chance he gets.

At least bring back McGann lol
