Despite kickstarting the entire shared televison universe, the CW's Arrow has a lot to prove with its fifth season. Several lacklustre creative choices have left the show with a negative outlook from the fanbase, something the network is aiming to correct when Arrow returns in the fall.

In a recent interview with IGN, executive producer Wendy Mericle addressed the fifth's seasons efforts to tie back to the first, taking the show back to its crime drama roots as opposed to the more fantastical elements we've seen in the last few. “The show was always meant to be a gritty crime drama at its heart," Mericle said. "And then Flash came along, and oh my gosh, we have meta powers. And then Damien [Darhk] was, well, we haven’t done magic on the show, let’s try to do that. I think for Season 5, just because it is an answer to Season 1, and we are sort of closing this chapter out, we did want to go back to our roots and figure out what is specific to this show. What is our universe? Go back to, ‘What is Arrow?'”

Fans of the DC television universe will know that the time-meddling events of the third season of The Flash are set to ripple across every CW superhero show, though the specifics have yet to be revealed. Mericle says the the events of Flashpoint has given Arrow the opportunity to use a "reset" button if they so choose. “Flashpoint provides an interesting jumping off point for all the shows this year, in that we have this reset button available to us if we want it. We’ve landed on a few things, but the door is open. That’s the fun part. You can play with it in whatever way, shape, or form you want to. I think it will be small in some ways, and big in others.”

...for a show called "Arrow" the premise seems 'pointless!"

I am still enjoying Arrow but will admit season 3 and 4 have been the weakest. I was more disappointed in season three than 3 than 4. But over all they haven't done so bad that I want to stop watching.

they might as well do a crisis story and then bundle all of these shows into one to make a jl show. cause they are are spread way to thin.

“The show was always meant to be a gritty crime drama at its heart."

Was it though? I mean, the first season was centered around Oliver killing people without knowing why they were on his father's list, aimlessly pursuing some kind of vague revenge, and then culminating in a cartoonish plot to destroy inner cities that seemed more at home for a villain of Captain Planet. But the whole this really was just a backdrop for a soap opera love triangle, complete with hilariously offputting musical cues with the protagonists started [frick]ing.

"Gritty", "crime", and "drama" are all pretty generous descriptions.

@malsemarcel - They won't be together. It's unfortunate that the show won't reset her out of existence...but I'll take what I can get.

Arrow you started the current trend on CBTV shows, (smallville was over 10 years ago)
but youve gotten stale and the Daredevil came along, and it just hasnt been topped.

Somewhat apples to oranges.Marvel Netflix shows are aimed at adults and can get away
with graphic sex and violence and short seasons that require no filler episodes.

The Arrowverse has to anchor a television network and walk a tightrope between that
network's core audience of teenage girls and a mostly older male audience of hard core
comicbook fans.

"Legends of Tomorrow" should have Arrow, Supergirl, Martian Manhunter, and Flash on it and still be able to support their own show...

....in the 70's and 80's there were actors that supported two shows at once

Oscar Goldman(Richard Anderson) appeared on both Six million dollar man and Bionic woman as same character

Arnold(Gary Coleman) appeared on Different Strokes, Facts of Life, and Silver Spoons as same character

...there were so many more intertwined shows like....

Happy Days, Lavern & Shirley, Mork & Mindy, Jonnie loves Chachi
All in the Family, the Jeffersons
Maude, Good Times
Cheers, Kramer
Soap, Benson
Three's Company, the Ropers, Three's a Crowd
the Rookies, S.W.A.T
Dukes of Hazard, Enos, Alice, Flo
Cosby Show, Different world
Love Boat , Fantasy Island....so many many more
