Arrowverse Creator Marc Guggenheim Clarifies SUPERMAN TV Series Confusion; Shares Brandon Routh Concept Art

Brandon Routh got a second chance to play Superman in Crisis on Infinite Earths and Arrowverse creator Marc Guggenheim has now clarified recent comments about plans for a spin-off TV series. Check it out!

Last week, comments from Arrowverse creator Marc Guggenheim went viral in which he seemed to suggest there had once been plans for a Kingdom Come-style TV series on The CW featuring Brandon Routh's Superman.

The Legends of Tomorrow star first played the Man of Steel in 2006's Superman Returns. However, thanks to the small screen Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, he was later given the chance to find redemption as that version of the iconic hero. Fans were left wanting more but was it ever really going to happen?

In a new blog post, the filmmaker addressed his remarks and offered some much-needed clarification about the supposed spin-off:

"One such follower asked if I had any promotional photos of [Brandon] Routh as Superman from the Crisis on Infinite Earths event that I showran. Thinking nothing of it, I posted what I had on my Dropbox and casually mentioned — because I thought it was a fun little nugget — that Brandon and I had talked about some kind of “sequel series” for his version of Superman.

"Well, that little comment kinda went viral. A friend of mine, a comic shop owner, texted me that suddenly his Facebook feed was nothing but articles about the comment — some of which exaggerated said comment into a 'possibility' (there is none that I can reasonably conceive of) or even 'talks' (which haven’t happened, unless you count Brandon’s and my little chats)."

"I share because it’s (a) an amusing anecdote that demonstrates how even the most innocuous of comments can, occasionally, go viral; and (b) a great example of how much love there still is for the Arrowverse. I don’t often write about the latter in this newsletter because I want it to be forward-facing as opposed to backwards-looking, but I really am humbled by and grateful for all the passion fans still have for our little endeavor"

You can read Guggenheim's comments in full here. While this Superman TV series wasn't ever actually in the works, he did share some never-before-seen concept art from Crisis showing Routh suited up as the iconic superhero.

Superman Returns was largely considered a disappointment when it was released, leaving the character on the shelf until 2013's divisive Man of Steel. The movie hurt Routh's career but, after a successful stint in the Arrowverse as Ray Palmer/The Atom, he got to put things right with this older Kal-El.

Would you have liked to see Routh star in his own Superman TV series?

@ObserverIO - well, this news makes me sad. Was hoping something would come of this...but on FX, TNT/TBS, USA, or even Syfy. Networks with a little more liberation with the writers/directors to do as they need.

@lazlodaytona - I gotta be honest I forgot what the article was about for a second there, got carried away with all my clowning around.

Yeah, it was a great guest appearance on Crisis. But I don't know if Gunn and Safran would wanna go in this direction, even as an Elseworlds project. Even on TV. It's a shame.

Also, I remember when they were appointed heads of DC, Guggenheim was very vocal in saying it should have been him instead. So maybe he burned that bridge, I dunno.

I woulda totally watched it though. But then I watch pretty everything DC.

Brandon Routh is an under rated actor. Dude was great as Superman in a boring Superman film, he was one of the best characters in legends of tomorrow and he’s been the best live action super saiyen we’ve seen in a movie so far.

@DrReedRichards - I'm not one for fancasting but I've decided the only person I want to hear yell "You think I'd like being complemented, jackass?!" is Iman Vellani.

I want him to have his own series as the Man of Steel. It was awesome seeing him as Superman again during Crisis, but Jon Cryer's teriffic performance as Lex Luthor ruined it when he replaced him as the paragon of Truth. I'm tried seeing him being Lex's punching bag.

Routh deserves a last shot as Superman. But he needs a break from Lex Luthor.

@cyclopstb - I get what you mean but I thought this was such a fun moment and purely in character for Lex

Cryer was great though , he’s close with Rosenbaum as my favorite live action Lex.

What do you think of Michael Cudlitz so far , I like his more darker almost Kingpin-esque take on the character but need to see more.

@cyclopstb - I'd love to see a 6-to-8-episode mark on MAX with there being about 50 min. long episodes.

Big fat no. Routh is an overrated average TV actor on his best day.

That costume probably is my favorite live action Superman suit so far…

I thought Routh was fine in Returns (his characterization was somewhat of an issue) but I liked him better in the COIE crossover personally so I wouldn’t have minded seeing a sequel series about him.

Initially I thought it wouldn’t have made sense since almost all his supporting cast was dead but after the Multiverse reboot at the end of the event and the yellow S Shield he had at the end , I wouldn’t be surprised if that wasn’t the case anymore.

Plus it was never outright confirmed that this was the older version of the Returns Superman , he just could have looked like that Superman and also had a son named Jason so you could have recast his supporting players because getting the cast from the movie would have been difficult for the most part.

Anyway it’s a moot point because nothing ever came of it outside of informal conversations and with S & L ending , I doubt DC & WB would want another version of the character at the same time as the DCU version (as dumb as that is imo).

If we can bring back Routh and also try and get Zachary Levi as Shazam, we can have a Chuck reunion of sorts. Superman vs Shazam, Chuck Bartowski vs Daniel Shaw.
