EDITORIAL: The Top 10 Best Moments From ARROW Season 2

Season 2 of Arrow was a big success for DC TV, introducing a host of new characters including the Black Canary and the Suicide Squad, and setting up a spin-off show for The Flash. With Season 3 just around the corner, let's have a look back at some of the best moments from last year.

Editorial Opinion

Season 2 of Arrow was arguably the best single season of a CBM show ever made. The quality was fantastic, with almost every episode impressing, week-in-week-out. The stunts and effects were great for the big episodes - and particularly impressive for a CW budget. These, in combination with some great acting performances (most notably Manu Bennett and David Ramsey) and a willingness from the producers to embrace the DC universe's vast and rich character library made Arrow one of the best shows around.

Here's a list of my ten favourite moments from last season...

10) Meet Barry Allen, The Scientist

"I'm sorry I'm late. My train was late. Actually, the second one. The first one I did miss, but theat was my cab driver's fault. I have this great traffic app and he thought that he was right. But I'm here now though" - Barry Allen

A lot of people (myself included) were pretty hesistant when Glee star Grant Gustin was announced as the future Flash of the DC TV universe. It's safe to say Gustin silenced a lot of the doubters with his two performances in the mid-season finale - and got everyone pretty excited for his new spin-off, The Flash, this fall.

9) The League Returns, Unthinkable

"I Am Nyssa, daughter of Ra's Al Ghul, heir to the demon" - Nyssa Al Ghul

"Felicity Smoak. MIT Class of '09" - Felicity Smoak

After two impressive appearances earlier on in the season, The League Of Assassins returned to Starling to help Oliver take on Slade in the finale. Their surprise arrival was just one of the many moments in the two-part finale that had me out of my seat in excitement. Bring on Ra's Al Ghul for Season 3!

8) Welcome To The Suicide Squad, Suicide Squad

"Give me a break, this ain't no task force. Let's call it like it is. Welcome to the Suicide Squad" - Floyd Lawton

Michael Rowe was one of the season's suprise packages as Deadshot, first impressing in a Russian prison team-up with Diggle in Keep Your Enemies Closer, and then as a member of the wildly entertaining Suicide Squad. I've been a big fan of the team for a few years now, and would love to see a rumoured spin-off show come to light.

7) Enter The Canary, City Of Heroes

"Where the hell did you come from?" - Roy Harper

Season 2 started with a bang, as fan-favourite 'Green Arrow' character The Canary exploded into the Arrow universe for the first time to save Roy's life from a few punk-ass kids. While she was missing her signature scream, she sure as hell still packed a punch or two, and went on to become a big part of the season.

6) Malcolm's Return, State Vs Queen

"There are parts of the world where death is an illusion. I've been to one. I learned to be very convincing" - Malcolm Merlyn

Barrowman!! He was never really going to stay dead was he? Season 1 villain, Malcolm Merlyn, returned to our screens alive and well after his supposed death last year. Even more suprising was the revelation that Thea was his daughter, and that he trained under a certain 'Ra's Al Ghul'. His return to the main cast for Season 3 has me very excited.

5) The Hood & The Mask, The Promise

“You know, when we first tried to get off this island, it was as strangers, but now it’s as brothers” – Slade Wilson

The core storyline behind Season 2 was always 'Oliver and Slade' - a friendship that turned them into archenemies, both on the island and in the present. But no moment highlighted their brotherhood as well as the pair of them suiting up in their hood and mask to bring down Ivo on the Amazo. It's a shame things turned so sour...

4) Enter Deathstroke, Blind Spot

"Your incompetence has now cost me four lives, Alderman. Fail me again, and yours will be the fifth" - Slade Wilson

Sebastian Blood did a fantastic job as the season's early antagonist, but nothing could beat Slade Wilson suiting up as the fearsome Deathstroke for the first time. After Blood's efforts to bring Starling City under his control hit a snag, Slade is forced to do a little old-skool killing, in an impressive show to keep Blood in line.

3) The Final Fight, Unthinkable

"I already know how you feel. I know what it's like to hate. To want revenge. And now I know how it feels to see my enemy so distracted, he doesn't see the real danger is right in front of him" - Oliver Queen

This is what it all came down to. The standout action piece of the season saw Oliver and Slade take each other on, for the first and last times. The scene made great use of juxtaposition between the past and present, ultimately ending with Oliver defeating his nemesis both times, in Starling and impaling him through the eye on the Amazo.

2) Moira's Sacrifice, Seeing Red

"There's only one way this night can end, and we both know that, don't we, Mr Wilson?" - Moira Queen

From misguided villain to selfless hero, Moira Queen endured one of the most difficult character arcs on the show - but her love for her children always remained constant. It was fitting here, then, that she died so that Thea and Oliver could live in a shocking last few minutes that no one saw coming.

1) Slade's Speech, Three Ghosts

"Once he has lost everyone and everything he values, I will drive an arrow through his eye" - Slade Wilson

What a moment. Slade's speech to Blood at the end of the mid-season finale still gives me goosebumps everytime I watch it. His threat to bring, not just Oliver, but everyone he works with and loves down really highlights how strong the core group of characters on Arrow are - and how scared you are for them if Slade is after them. Fantastic stuff.

So there you have it folks! My ten favourite moments from Season 2. Do you agree with them, or have you got any other favourite moments? I'd love to know what you guys think in the comments, and if you enjoyed this then give it a thumb.

Also if you liked what you saw here why don't you give my blog, The Tiny Screen, a look? I'm currently reviewing shows like ArrowThe Blacklist and Agents Of SHIELD.

Moira's sacrifice is my favorite. Not because I disliked the character, but because the scene was just so well done and one of the most emotional in the series. I might be biased because I called that it would happen, but still.

Al fo these are great moments. The final fight was pretty awesome. I loved pretty much all scenes with Deathstroke in it.

You forgot to mention the massive street fight with team Arrow/ The LEague of assassins vs the mirikuru super soldiers.

This show honestly had some of the best fight choreography I have ever seen on television. The final fight proved that. My question is, where the hell were the fight choreographers during Smallville?

Holy crap!!! How did that happen! Massive fan of Guggenheim and the other two showrunners :D

@superbatspiderman

How did I miss that? Haha this show has too many great moments. Love the switch to Deadshot and Dig halfway through

@Everyone

Cheers for the support guys. I have to admit it was a real close call between Moira's sacrifice and Slade's speech for No.1 but I thought Manu Bennett just pips it haha :)

@Minty nice article, but I think that you're being way too kind. "Best CBM TV show"? You know what? You may be OK with that as really... what else is there to compete with it? SHIELD? Now that's funny. But a few seasons of Smallville of 60's Batman may have something to say about it.

Anywho, second half of last season killed it for me for three main reasons.

One: Deathstroke. Love the character, but there was waaaayyy too much Deathstroke the last half of the season. Less is more would've been nice for that cat.

Two: Archers. Seriously, I get that the show is called 'Arrow' but does every hero and villain, man and woman, have to be a fucckin archer?

Three: The women. All they do is pout, cry and get themselves in trouble. Useless. Black Canary was a super blah letdown and the only cool thing to happen to the only interesting woman was the *spoiler*...

death of mama Arrow.

FINAL VERDICT: Season 2 Arrow - 6.75/10. Loved the first half, got bored with the second.
StilettoRoyalty
StilettoRoyalty - 8/30/2014, 7:53 PM
@xcan - Marry me. I agree. I adored Moira Queen. The first half of Arrow was pretty great. But I feel like they lost their path from 2x14 - 2x20. They found their rhythm again from 2x21 - 2x23. Those episodes were possibly the best in the entire series. For me, Arrow always seems better when they focus more on the core team arrow fighting the baddie of the week than when they try to focus too much on non-Arrow 'heroes". Because I hate to say this, but the Black Canary ate the show for a long stretch and I just couldn't watch. I'm here for Arrow, not the Arrow & Black Canary show. Add in the fact that this Black Canary is not the one they will have as THE black canary, it felt as if they were wasting episodes on her. Just my opinion.

xcan - 8/30/2014, 8:35 PM
@StilettoRoyalty if you are a woman, marriage may be an option. If you are a man, friends is all we can ever be ;-) Black Canary just seemed disinterested, and yes, way too much focus on the 'Ollie & Canary' variety hour. Interesting theory on writing her out.

@Superhero96 I even got momma xcan to watch this show and she loved it. I'd go home every few weeks and she would gossip about it... until the second half of season two. Just like stiletto, you and I. Well at least there's the four of us in agreement. HOPING they bring back the diversity of the previous 1.5 seasons.

Ok, I have to ask, what do people see in this show?

I was hotly anticipating this show when I heard about it, but I don't get any channels that run it. Finally in March I managed to catch a few episodes aboard a plane when I was on vacation. I saw three total and didn't really have a whole lot to choose from, I can't recall all three, but one was the "Sacrifice" episode and another was the "Crucible" episode.

Anyways they did nothing for me at all. Too much of the time is spent cutting to flashbacks that I knew next to nothing about and rarely seemed to relate to the story in the present. It made me feel like they wanted to tell me another story, but didn't have the time to really get anything worthwhile explained while still telling the main story.

Then there are just alot of characters, which in itself isn't a bad thing, but in the Arrow pretty much every character has ulterior motives or hidden secrets that end up coming back to F over Oliver in the end. It becomes really hard to care about what he does or who he helps when pretty much everything comes back to bite him in the ass. If there were fewer characters this wouldn't be such a big problem, but with alot then there becomes a web where every little thing become a big thing.

And everytime I bring this up people assume I am just hating on the show and s**tting all over it, but in reality I really wanted this show to do something for me. Conceptually it sounds amazing and right up my alley, but when I saw the finished product it just wasn't even close to what I had envisioned it being. It also makes me worry about the upcoming Flash show too, especially since the Flash is possibly my favorite DC hero of them all.
StilettoRoyalty
StilettoRoyalty - 8/30/2014, 11:23 PM
@LewisLightning OK, I feel the need to defend my show. Admittedly, Arrow is a show that you need to start form Season 1, episode 1. Now even as I say this, as with any show, season 1 has its issues, as with a lot of shows in their first season. But if you stick with it knowing beforehand that it gets better as the show progresses, I think you'll enjoy it. Season 2 was a much better season up to 2x13. Now, I do agree that I've had my issues as well with the over-bloated cast at times, specifically when the show forgets that it's about Green Arrow. Like you, I often questioned the reason behind some of the plots, but I've realized that it all eventually ties back into the big picture. Flashbacks of his time stranded on an island are often used as parallels for the current plot in present day and seems to add a bit of continuity to the storyline. However, I do feel they've learned to write with a better balance with such a big cast. I also applaud them for not trying to write the show as a mirror to the comic version that never really gain popularity. No one wants to watch a show that has a predetermined outcome that viewers are rejecting. You have o be willing to make adjustments. This is a major turn they took in Season 2. It was refreshing. It reinvigorated my passion for it, and the stunts on the show reached cinematic levels. So again, I promise, if you start from the beginning, hang in there through the show's growing pains in season 1, you will love this show. You won't love every character, but you'll love the overall show & the massive production it requires to produce it.

Yeah, when people say they don't get the show based off of S1 episodes, I totally get it. S1 was sluggish and had a lot of issues. But S2 is really freaking awesome and blows its predecessor away. Unfortunately, you do need to watch the S1 episodes to get into S2, but it's definitely worth it. The second half of S2 especially was just incredible and rife with chaos.

I would've topped the list with the League of Assassins vs mirakuru super soldiers fight. Imo, that was the pinnacle of chaos.

LewisLightning - 8/30/2014, 11:54 PM
@StillettoRoyalty well thanks for your explanation, as I said, usually I just get dumped on for not automatically loving the show.

But I have to say those episodes I watched did absolutely nothing for me. Even if I were to go back to episode 1, season 1 and watch them all through I still feel like I wouldn't care. I feel Like even if I knew everything about those island flashbacks I still wouldn't care much about the show in general. I don't think it'd bring any more meaning to what I saw than what I experienced already.

I had the same experience with Smallville. I saw a few episodes but what I saw never made me want to tune in next week to see more, or if I didn't know what was going on in that particular episode to go back to find out what happened the previous week. I just feel that the shows' focus is 'off' so to speak. I don't really give a damn about all these minor characters (like the detective's daughter), and I wouldn't shed a tear if pretty much the entire cast was killed off (even Diggle and the other chick that helps Green Arrow). I mean I like Green Arrow and the action that surrounds him, but the show is WAY TOO bogged down with side characters that ruin the show for me. It gets to the point where the episodes feel more about the interpersonal relationships between each and every character rather than about a hero named Green Arrow who fights crime.

For me, it was always about Deathstroke. I have been waiting to see him on ANY screen for a long time (and, for the record, that Smallville abomination does NOT count!!!) I'm going to have a hard time watching the show without Deathstroke. I wasn't rabidly watching until Slade was involved and, honestly, none of the other villains can TOUCH what Manu did with Wilson. I'm going to check out the League of Assassins and hope that they prove as interesting as Wilson did.

Cheers for all the comments, thumbs and support guys! Honestly I guess the best thing about this show is that there were so many great moments I had to leave out at least five that could easily have made this list another day, and the ones that did make it could be shuffled around as well.

@xcan - I get where you're coming from mate, at the beginning of last year I honestly did not see myself enjoying Arrow as much as I ended up doing. Perhaps I have been kind, but that's because I enjoyed the season so much. I can't agree with you on the Deathstroke thing either as for me Manu Bennett was fantastic. You may be right about the archer overload though haha - it makes for kind of awkward one on one fights! :P

@Minghagz - No problem bud, glad its got you excited for next season!

Very nice article! @Minty :)

I tried to watch S1 back then, but I stopped after a few episodes. I tuned in again when I heard Manu was on the show, but again I quit after a short while. I then returned for the last four or so episodes. Still haven't seen all of S1, and probably never will.

I watched S2 whole, and enjoyed most of it a lot. I showed that one epic midseason trailer to some friends who were never much interested in Arrow, and afterwards they watched S1+2 and are now bigger fans of the show than I'll ever be. ^^

Season 3 can come, though they will have to cast a great Ra's to match their awesome Manu/Slade casting.

Great list.

One of my personal favorites was when Slade captured Thea and hijacked that presentation, showing her bound to the chair and Slade taunting them.

Slade is such an asshole, and I love him.

@Kyos - thanks a lot man, glad you liked it! Yeah I agree Season 1 was tough to get into, and the second half was a big improvement on the first. Manu Bennett is so great in the role, I agree they will need to go big with Ra's this year to come anywhere close to replicating his success

@TheDarkPassenger - Cheers bud! Very true, that was such a great episode as a whole. I loved the way in just forty minutes (of screen time) Slade managed to turn Oliver's world upside down. What a man
