GREEN ARROW AND THE CANARIES Spinoff Series Not Moving Forward At The CW

Nearly a year after its backdoor pilot, The CW has formally passed on the proposed Arrow spinoff Green Arrow and the Canaries, which was set to star Katie Cassidy, Juliana Harkavy and Katherine McNamara.

While this move was likely a long time coming, The CW has formally announced today that they have decided to pass on the proposed Arrow spinoff Green Arrow and the Canaries.

The now-canceled show, which aired a backdoor pilot on January 21, 2020 as part of its flagship series' final season, was set to star Katie Cassidy (Laurel Lance/Black Canary), Juliana Harkavy (Dinah Drake/Black Canary II) and Katherine McNamara (Thea Queen/Green Arrow) in the lead roles.

Thanks to a considerable amount of pre-release buzz, the backdoor pilot managed to draw 893,000 viewers. This was a season-high, not including the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover. It even managed to score considerably more viewers than the actual series finale the following week, as the uneventful final episode more or less closed out the show's run with a thud rather than a bang.

It's now unclear where the characters could go after this or if the series finale will be the last we see of them in the Arrowverse, but with some retconning, it seems possible that any one of them could reappear on The FlashLegends of TomorrowBatwoman, or Superman & Lois at some point in the future (Supergirl and Black Lightning are both ending after their upcoming seasons, so it seems improbable any of the three starlets would appear in their respective final seasons).

Well that sucks, it makes for the first Arrowverse spin-off that is not given a show after having a backdoor pilot.

Always thought that it being centered on Guggenheim's baby of the fanservice ship he favoured over canon was a so-so idea and Mia as a character was the same for me. Maybe if the spin-off had been focused on other characters from the comics like Connor or Emiko it could've lead somewhere.

However I hope they consider the choice of exploring the loose ends left in the episode to be addressed in a show like Legends, given it was a suggestion done by Guggenheim. We would get once again Katie Cassidy and Caity Lotz sharing the screen as the Lance sisters as well and dive in what exactly was gonna happen if Mia failed in as GA that would set back the city into chaos.

And I also thought that if GAATC worked then Mia would time travel annually to join the other League members and take Oliver's seat in the table, considering Barry made it out of consideration back then. So now I wonder what the plan for that would be.

Current shows: The Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Stargirl and Superman & Lois. (SG and Black Lightning will say goodbye this year)

Coming up: Wonder Girl and Ava DuVernay's Naomi which isn't necessarily set in the Arrowverse franchise.

And two weeks ago Swamp Thing finished it's re-run on the network too. Hope they make an soon announcement to know if nothing will change or if HBO Max or someone will find it a new home.

@Nightwing1015 - Yeah I couldn’t keep up without obsessing over it, so now I just rewatch the flash with the kids, a year and a half now and we’re only a bit into season two

I was looking forward to this. I thought the Mia Smoak angle was cool and her teaming up with the Canaries would've been bad ass plus the idea of William being like their Oracle would been pretty cool.

I'm gonna miss Arrow's style of grittiness compared to the rest of the Arrowverse.
