DC Studios Co-Chair James Gunn On How PEACEMAKER Season 2 Makes The Leap From The DCEU TO DCU

DC Studios co-chair James Gunn hints that he's cooking up an explanation for how John Cena's Peacemaker transitions from the DCEU to DCU.

James Gunn is back on social media interacting with fans but this time, instead of talking about Superman: Legacy or some other upcoming DCU film, Gunn was answering questions about Peacemaker season 2.

In terms of progress, Gunn is working on episode 6 of season 2, today.

He also confirmed that season 2 of Peacemaker will have a completely different opening number.

However, things got really interesting when a fan asked about how Gunn would navigate the fact that season 1 of Peacemaker was firmly set within the DCEU, with cameos from Zack Snyder's Justice League bookending the season finale.

Gunn cryptically, teased, "You'll have to wait and see."  And in response to a follow-up comment about it being easier to just make a new show, Gunn replied that he didn't want to go that route, "Because it's my favorite thing to do, it's the biggest original Max show ever, and I have a way in. It won't be confusing."

The "I have a way in" reply is especially intriguing. One could easily infer that either:

a)these actors making the leap from the DCEU to the DCU will be playing the same character, albeit one in a new dimension

b)these will be the same DCEU versions of these characters that get transported to a new reality.

Either way, it sounds as if Gunn has an explanation and he thinks it won't confuse the general audience.

Aside from John Cena's Christopher Smith, Steve Agee will also reprise his role as John Economos. While Gunn's wife, Jennifer Holland will return to play Emilia Harcourt.

The show was one of the most critically acclaimed projects from the DCEU, achieving a 94% approval rating on the aggregate review website, Rotten Tomatoes.

ABOUT PEACEMAKER Season 1
Peacemaker explores the continuing story of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of James Gunn's 2021 film The Suicide Squad—a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.

The 8-episode television show was created by James Gunn for the, "then-named" streaming service HBO Max.

The show stars John Cena as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase / Vigilante, Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos and Robert Patrick as August "Auggie" Smith. Dee Bradley Baker voices Peacemaker's pet bald eagle, Eagly.

@bobevanz - it did in TSS (I loved douchey Peacemaker in that film) but the humor and writing felt dumbed down in the Peacemaker show.

@CoHost - pretty much. Shit was torture to watch.

@TheLobster - I'd agree with that some of the stuff was cringe bad. That scene when he naming all the different people Economos could've framed instead of his father was brutal. Also the singing in the van was a bit too. But other than that I loved every second of it

I really liked season 1 so I’m excited for a season 2 while still apprehensive about how this is all going to work.

Best bet….James Gun just says the first film is not connected to the DCEU and both The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are part of the DCU.

You just know Gunn is keeping things pretty wholesome and PG for Superman Legacy… but the second that movie’s finished, the flood gates are going to open, and all the F-bombs and dick & fart jokes he’s been keeping to himself for past two years will finally see the light of day in Peacemaker season 2.

The main reason I'm bummed out Black Adam crashed and burned because, at some point, they could have had a short fight between Cena and the Rock on the big screen. Obviously, BA would have to be de-powered for a spell or Cena picks up temporary powers like Butcher from The Boys. That would have been cool way down the line.

I love that the people who always ask these kinds of questions are the ones who wouldn't be confused by the idea of a multi-verse, new continuity, etc.

Just stirring up shit for the hell of it.

@RedFury - I mean, even if multiverse stories CAN be confusing using it to alter canon or transport characters from one universe to another is always easy enough to pull off with good writing such as for instance the end of Back to the Future showing things have changed in a brief scene if a time travel reason or simply sucked through a portal into a strange new world that has been done a lot in easy to follow scifi and fantasy story plots.

I thought it was pretty good. Certainly not great.

It's still all about Superman Legacy.

If that is great, then I'll give Peacemaker II, etc. a shot.

If Legacy isn't good, I don't care about the other stuff.

Wow, after writing Legacy, he is now busy with S2.

The comicbook movie genre will be revived by Gunn.
