Last year's WGA strikes slowed the DCU's roll, and while Creature Commandos will still premiere in 2024 as planned, Waller is no longer likely to be released before SUPERMAN (formerly known as Superman: Legacy).
We'd expected the Max series to set the tone for the DCU, revealing how James Gunn intends to reboot the DCEU while still keeping many of the actors he worked with on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
While we wait and see what happens on that front, scooper Daniel Richtman is today reporting that both Waller and Peacemaker season 2 will begin shooting later this year. Gunn has yet to confirm or debunk these claims, though they do line up with what we've previously heard about plans for the shows.
Gunn previously confirmed that Waller comes first, with Peacemaker up next. When plans for the latter to get a second season - as part of the DCEU - were announced, the filmmaker said, "Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max."
"To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can’t wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in season two."
No plot details have been revealed for Peacemaker season 2, but when Waller was announced, it was confirmed that Viola Davis will reprise her role with the show set to also feature appearances from "Team Peacemaker." The series will be written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Supernatural).
"For me, it was just about seeing who Peacemaker was," Gunn told us in 2022 when we asked about how he made one of The Suicide Squad's most despicable characters someone we could root for. "I knew that I loved the guy. I knew that I felt sorry for him and I knew that he was trapped in what would be called toxic masculinity."
"He’s trapped in this world set down by his father that has forced him into being a certain way, but in his heart, he’s an artist. He’s the guy we see at the end of episode six playing the piano. That’s who Peacemaker is, and yet, he’s become something completely different than that."
"He’s a guy whose soul was truly saved by rock ‘n’ roll," Gunn continued. "That was his ultimate form of rebellion, but also his way of maintaining himself and who he is to some slight degree. I think if I loved him, I always figured other people would probably fall in love with him too."
