THE FLASH Star Grant Gustin Reveals Season 6 Was Going To End With "A Big [Reverse-Flash] Cliffhanger"

The Flash star Grant Gustin (Barry Allen) has revealed that the original season six finale was set to feature a major cliffhanger ending revolving around the villainous Eobard Thawne. Check it out...

Like every other production on the planet, The Flash has been forced to go on an unexpected hiatus as a result on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With episodes only set to air through May 12th, it appears as if the show isn't actually going to end its sixth season as planned.

While that's not overly surprising, the hope was the finales in the midst of production would eventually be completed and air later this year. Instead, it seems The CW is just going to end the shows with whichever episodes were 100% done. In the case of The Flash, that means we're missing out on a major Reverse-Flash twist according to star Grant Gustin.

"There was going to be a big Thawne cliffhanger at the end of what this season would have been, but that’s not going to be the cliffhanger we get," Gustin recently told TVLine. "[Episode] 619, “Success Is Assured,” is going to end up being our finale, so we’re going to have a different cliffhanger than originally planned."

"But the cliffhanger at the end of 619 does serve as a pretty good finale," the actor noted.

Up until now, Eobard Thawne has had a shadowy presence in season six of The Flash. There's been a lot of disappointment that he was nowhere to be seen in Crisis of Infinite Earths, of course, and it sounds like his return in the show's original finale might have gone some way in making up for that.

Unfortunately, it could be a while before we get to see what that was supposed to entail.

Thawne is one of the reasons The Flash is too confusing for me to get into. How many times has the guy died at this point? And he keeps coming back as a "time remenant" or whatever. And sometimes he's played by the Harrison Wells guy and sometimes he's played by the other actor.

Hmm, I hope that they are able to pull it off if they are ending the season early (but guess not much you can do about that with this pandemic). Save Thawne for next season then I guess.

I'd rank his original portrayal in s1, especially before you see his face, as one of the best live action CB villains, film or TV. He was a much more experienced speedster than Barry at the time, had no rational motive, and was just pretty scary.

I mean, duh? They brought back Angry Helicopter Noises, of course here was going to be more to it than a brief monster-of-the-week possession.

I hoped and thought they stopped shooting around 6x20 so I thought with luck we could end it there and they could later come back and shoot the final two in order to release them as a special two hour Season finale, sadly it won't be the case.

With luck they will use the footage of 6x20 for their Season 7 premiere and the scripts or ideas that were left for 6x21 and 6x22 will be used for S7 or they could expand on it as they dod their first "Graphic Novel 1" which seems to be the MO the new showrunner likes to use. That would be fine by me.

As for Thawne probably using a new host after he was exorcised from Nash's body, maybe he could somehow inhabit the body of Eddie, since he was his ancestor and it would be a huge mindfrack for Barry and Iris and the rest. Plus Rick Cosnett could pulled it off.

@NinnesMBC - My dream would have been if the season ended with Oliver showing up in the finale and it turned out that Thawne went into his body and that Stephen Amell would be playing Reverse Flash in Season 7 as a regular.
