GAME OF THRONES Creator Wants The Spinoff To Be Titled THE LONG NIGHT; Gives An Update On The Other Prequels
In a blog post, A Song of Ice and Fire creator George R.R. Martin addressed the recent announcement regarding one of the Game of Thrones prequel series, and revealed what he'd like the series to be called.
A few days ago, HBO revealed new details on the first spinoff for their Game of Thrones series, specifically that it will be a prequel set thousands of years before the main series and will detail the origins of a number of important figures.
Now, in a post on his personal blog, George R.R. Martin addressed the announcement and reaffirmed the details released by HBO, while noting that all of the planned spinoffs will be prequels. Also, he added what he’d choose to call the new series.
“All of the successor shows we’ve been developing have been prequels, as I have mentioned before. This one really puts the PRE in prequel, since it is set not ninety years before GAME OF THRONES (like Dunk & Egg), or a few hundred years, but rather ten thousand years (well, assuming the oral histories of the First Men are accurate, but there are maesters at the Citadel who insist it has only been half that long). We’re very early in the process, of course, with the pilot order just in, so we don’t have a director yet, or a cast, or a location, or even a title. (My vote would be THE LONG NIGHT, which says it all, but I’d be surprised if that’s where we end up. More likely HBO will want to work the phrase “game of thrones” in there somewhere. We’ll know sooner or later).”
Those of you familiar with Game of Thrones lore will know that The Long Night is a historical event in Westeros, where winter lasted an entire generation. This was also the era during which the Children of the Forest created the White Walkers, Bran the Builder created the Wall, and the legendary hero Azor Ahai were said to have lived. So, this should give fans a clearer idea of some of the character we may see in the series.
Aside from details on the prequel from Jane Goldman, Martin also explained the status of the other prequels being developed.
“If you have been following along, you know that we started with four, and eventually went to five.” Martin said on his blog. “One of those has been shelved, I am given to understand, and of course Jane’s pilot is now moving to film. But that does not mean the others are dead. Three more GAME OF THRONES prequels, set in different periods and featuring different characters and storylines, remain in active development. “
While it would seem that HBO is confident enough to move forward with all of their planned spinoffs, Martin seemed a little less sure, saying “one more pilot, and maybe more than one” could be filmed in the coming years.
