GAME OF THRONES To End With Season 7?

GAME OF THRONES To End With Season 7?

Although we're only coming towards the end of season 3 now, and George R.R. Martin still has two books in the saga to go, producer Frank Doelger reckons HBO won't go past seven seasons..if they even get that far! Read on for more..

We know that seasons 3 and 4 of HBO's Game Of Thrones will both be adapted from the third book in Martin's saga, A Storm Of Swords. That means seasons 5 onward have the remaining two books -- A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons -- to work from. But what about the two other books Martin is still writing? Well, what about them indeed! While talking to Rolling Stone, obe of the show's producers Frank Doelger reckons that no matter what happens, he'll be happy if we see seven seasons.

"[The number of series] is being discussed as we speak. The third season was the first half of book three, season four will be the second part of book three. . . George R.R. Martin has written books four and five; six and seven are pending," Doelger told Radio Times at the BAFTA Awards last weekend. "I would hope that, if we all survive and if the audience stays with us, we'll probably get through to seven seasons."

We have already witnessed a few changes from the books of course, but I would assume we are in for even more drastic ones if the showrunners need to come up with some kind of ending before we actually get one from Martin (although the writer has apparently told the need-to-knows how things end ..just in case). Books 4 and 5 will also have to be streamlined quite considerably to squeeze the major events into a final couple of seasons. For those of you that have been reading, is there anything you couldn't do without them dropping? Sound off below.

Assuming book seven is actually the end...

I'd prefer the keep it going until a solid resolution. I think most members of the audience would rather it doesn't just go on and on and on.

"Just in case" meaning "Should the old corpulent fellow die suddenly."

Or start making hbo go a streaming service without having to have a cable subscription makes no sense

Well, HBO has already said so long as Martin keeps writing them, they'll keep making them. Of course, that comes with the assumption that ratings would remain as consistent as they have. So far, that part has been working out pretty well for everyone.

Honestly, the show cuts out and reduces massive amounts of the book as it is; and they've done a great job with the amount of time and money they have available.

This is one story that just cannot be rushed. I mean look what they've had to do with Jamie, his moral/character "transition" takes a good stretch of time in the book, but they've really had to reduce that in the show. It's completely understandable, but man, you really need more like 20 1.5hr episodes to get across everything in the books. (and a lot more money)

Judging by how long it takes Martin to get the books out, I don't see how they can end the series before the 7th book is released. book 7 likely won't be released until 2018

Honestly, and I'm speaking as a big fan of the books, as well written s book 4 is, in the grand scheme of the whole story I found it pretty pointless. It was almost like Martin shifted focus away from his main characters until he figured out what he was gonna do with them, while we learned about a bunch of nobodies!

@ Charlie: I completely agree w ya man! The first 3 books? Incredible! I'm currently TRYING to get through book 5, which, after plodding away, even actually FORCING myself to get through book 4, I had higher hopes 4 the 5th. But its not much more exciting than 4! Book 4 introduces a whole slew of new characters whereas book 5 brings back the characters we know and love. There's no reason why season 4 and 5 couldn't b each separate book, just highlighting the more exciting parts, which are few and very far between.

I'm down for that. A story is only great when it's ending is just as good, if not better than, the beginning. Stories that never end honestly become stale and meaningless, only trying to make readers/viewers happy instead of focused on telling great stories.

@RorMachine: oh I agree completely w what you said about book 4 being pointless and about a bunch of nobodies! Lol and it was such a massive book to get through, but I did it, anticipating a return to the page turning excitement of the further adventures of the main characters and what'd we get? Although more interesting than 4, still rather dull.

Maybe I just got too spoiled by the first 3 books. And trust me. I'm ALL about story and building up the backgrounds of the characters, I'm not just an action junkie. But damn.

I highly doubt that they will end it if the ratings don't drop. They have never had as great a success as GOT. I really do hope they get to finish the series, because I doubt GRRM will finish the books

I think hbo would gladly let the show take a year off towards the end letting Martin finish the last book. Other hbo shows have taken a year off before

Yeah just take a break and then come back to finish the series off.

BTW the publisher made him split ADWD into 2 books because it was soo massive that's why we got AFFC. Which is the worst of the books but it's not terrible I enjoyed it people like to complain to much the book is awesome !

They should find a satisfying way to end the show. There's no way they can duplicate the books exactly.

Wouldn't mind if the first episode each season is double as long (but still 10 episodes) and that every episode is at least 55 minutes to 60.

I'm alright with alterations to accommodate the format the show's creators are working in. I'd love to see the whole series followed as faithfully as possible, but it is what it is.

book 3 and 4 were 1 book originally.
If you judge them as one book, all those new characters would be put at the end of the story.

quit picking on GoT book 3.5 guys :P

Couldnt get past the third book, I say stick to series books are quite pointless, Characters getting killed after few hundred pages on their favorite drinks, armors and maidens without solving anything, It had shock value for first book but I think author gets off on creating new character just to kill them to introduce some more.

The king slaying was for damn good reasons.
Jamie is barley even an oathbreaker if you understand he was forced into the kings guard as a hostage more or less.

he actually writes well, he isnt going to hold your hand and spell everything out to you.

I'm sure G.R.R.M is sorry Ned stark didn't survive being beheaded like Bruce Willis would though. ;)

Just make a big screen movie out of the last book as a two-parter or somethin'.

if they plan to fit it all in seven seasons (most likely they'll change a lot if this happens) then each episode will have to be an hour and ten minutes and would need to move much faster then it already is, and most likely ten episode would not suffice. 20 in a season would help.

Seven seasons is fine by me, so long as they tell the story as it is meant to be told. It's a great series, a little overrated but I enjoy it.
