GAME OF THRONES Won't Be Getting A Sequel Series; Maisie Williams Comments On Arya's Fate - SPOILERS

Although the Game of Thrones finale does leave room for potential follow-ups, HBO has taken the possibility of a sequel series off the table. Plus, Maisie Williams shares her thought's on Arya's fate...

Sunday's series finale of Game of Thrones gives the surviving characters a fitting sendoff and wraps up their respective stories, but there is also some room to continue some of their arcs - Arya's, in particular.

At the very end of "The Iron Throne," the youngest Stark girl decides to set sail and explore "whatever is west of Westeros," and as divisive as the episode turned out to be, most fans agree that they would still return for the continuing adventures of the Night King-Slayer.

Well, that's probably never going to happen.

While speaking to THR about the final season and HBO's plans for the future, HBO programming president Casey Bloys was asked of the idea of a direct sequel had ever been explored.

"Nope, nope, nope. No," was his rather definitive response. "Part of it is, I do want this show — this Game of Thrones, Dan and David's show — to be its own thing. I don't want to take characters from this world that they did beautifully and put them off into another world with someone else creating it."

He continued, "I want to let it be the artistic piece they've got. That's one of reasons why I'm not trying to do the same show over. George has massive, massive world; there are so many ways in. That's why we're trying to do things that feel distinct — and to not try and re-do the same show. That's probably one of the reasons why, right now, a sequel or picking up any of the other characters doesn't make sense for us."

Speaking of Arya Stark, actress Maisie Williams tells EW that she was pleasantly surprised to find out that her character was getting a happy ending after being taken to such dark places over the years, but she does have one regret: not getting to kill Cersei.

“I just wanted to be on set with Lena again, she’s good fun. And I wanted Arya to kill Cersei even if it means [Arya] dies too. Even up to the point when Cersei’s with Jaime I thought [while reading the script], ‘He’s going to whip off his face [and reveal its Arya]’ and they’re both going to die. I thought that’s what Arya’s drive has been.”

Most fans probably expected something similar, to be fair!

It never made sense to me for HBO to do sequels without the guiding hand of Martin or some direction. There was room to explore the past but that was also shut down.

Arya's ending was random as well, didn’t like how she basically used Gendry and then left. She really should have been the one to kill Cersei.

I'm not interested in prequels if what we just got was the [frick]ing future/endgame for that world. Or at least HBO's world.

Even with hundreds and thousands of years to explore prior, I just feel numb knowing that Season 7 and Season 8 are its future.

@Kurne - Same. And a similar feeling is what's keeping me from getting excited about The Mandalorian, or any other post-ROTJ Star Wars content really. It's too bad. :(

@Kyos - Yup, exact same feeling about Mandalorian. What is it-- 25-30 years before Force Awakens? That's a lot of time but it still feels pointless.

@Kurne - I never understood that way of thinking about prequels.

It would be one thing if the prequels had the same characters. But if it's far enough in the past that the characters are different then I don't see it as being a bad thing at all.

It's like Star Wars and Knights of the Old Republic. It's so far in the past that it's all fresh, even if we already know what eventually happens in the far future.

@Kurne - I really enjoyed season 7 thus why I was so let down by season 8. I think a prequel of the children of the forest and the first man/men would could work for a few seasons. maybe.
But for Bloys to come out and say how he is not going to try to do any follow up or corrections to D&D'S work even with all of the backlash and heat they are catching from fans and the fact that many people will be canceling their service I believe seems unwise on his part.

That's good, IMO.

I'd rather not see a sequel series. Lets keep it years before the show.

Not sure how it became ‘The Arya Show’

“We want Arya to kill this person, that person, another person”.

Arya got her kill with Night King. That’s enough.

Leave moments for other characters. She’s not Wolverine of FoxMen afterall.

@IronGenesis - Exactly. She killed the Night King. The biggest threat to the entire world that was ever in the show.

John Snowballs should have killed Dany (which he did) and Jamie Lannister should have killed Cersei.

I'm burned out on this franchise after this last season. All of the good will previous seasons earned was spent in full by the series finale. I'm even tired of the talks about how disappointing it all was. So I'm stepping out on this one now.

They really should’ve let D and D walk and give someone else a go at it. Continue the show where this left the stark children.

I think at some point I'll watch episode 2 of the final season (maaaaybe episode 1 as well), and that'll be it for me.

@Kyos - I'd argue the best eps of the season. Best moment for me was Sam learning his family's fate, the first time I truly cared for Sam.

@MrCamw1 - From what I'v heard and seen it definitely sounds like the best one. And ending there would leave me with the illusion that the White Walkers might've actually mattered in the big picture.

CorndogBurglar - 5/22/2019, 3:59 AM
@Kyos - Yeah. By episodes 5 and 6 Dany's army of Unsullied and Dothraki spawned so many troops that it looked like she never even fought the White Walkers. It's like they fought the White Walkers but it had no consequences whatsoever. They were the most easily beaten army in the entire series.

Honestly, a sailing show focused on Arya where she never returns to Westeros just keeps getting pirate adventures, faces Voodoo magic and discovers Americaeros would have a different feeling to Game of Thrones. Just saying that the specific reason they mention in this article is invalid.

Man I feel sorry the actors. They were part of the greatest TV show of all time. Until the ending. It completely changes the narrative.

The writers did it. Not the fans.

Give me a damn break. D & D adapted GRRM story. So what the hell does the CEO of HBO mean no direct sequel. Mark my words....10 to 20 years down the line...these characters will be revisited by other showrunners. D&D do not own the characters or story.
