New GAME OF THRONES Season 5 Character Portraits; Show May Run Past Season 7

Following their collector's covers, EW have revealed these stylish character portraits of Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), Jon (Kit Harrington), Arya (Maisie Williams), and Tyrion (Peter Dinklage). Plus, HBO's Michael Lombardo would like the show to last longer than the planned 7 seasons...

Though major deviations from the source novels are inevitable as a result, Game Of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have always maintained that they envisioned only 7 seasons for the incredibly popular HBO series -- but what if someone high up at the network wants it to run longer? “We’ll have an honest conversation that explores all possible avenues,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo tells EW after admitting that he'd prefer if the show kept going for a while after 2017. “If they weren’t comfortable going beyond seven seasons, I trust them implicitly and trust that’s the right decision—as horrifying as that is to me. What I’m not going to do is have a show continue past where the creators believe where they feel they’ve finished with the story.” Whatever happens, let's hope they come up with an ending that pleases TV and book fans alike... if that's even possible.

Episode #41: “The Wars to Come”: Cersei and Jaime adjust to a world without Tywin. Varys reveals a conspiracy to Tyrion. Dany faces a new threat to her rule. Jon is caught between two kings. (Written by David Benioff & D. B. Weiss; directed by Michael Slovis.)

i see it stopping at 7 or 8 and they probably will do spinoffs. Heard they may consider a movie.

they really seem to be pushing Arya to the foreground with this promotional campaign. It makes sense, since her story arc is one of my favourites in the book, and gets awesome this season!

@LubedUp they were apparently thinking about adapting the 'tales of dunk & egg', which were short stories written by martin set 100 years before the current story. Also, adapting Robert's rebellion has also been discussed.

A spinoff would work. There are the Dunk and Egg stories - three of which will be released together this year in a book called 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'. They are set before Game of Thrones.

But, yeah, there is a ton of material that they haven't included in the series so far. They apparently aren't continuing the Iron Island story in Season 5 and there is the whole Lady Stoneheart thing.

I won't elaborate on what those plots are, I don't want to spoil anyone, but there is a ton of material there.

If they want the show to run for longer than seven seasons then they won't lack material to pull from.

My Dream as a book reader is that GRRM is taking so long because he's finishing the series and releasing the books just a year apart. Maybe WOW will be released early 2016 before the 6th season and ADOS in early 2017 before season 7? I'm a dreamer I know haha

@BruceJordan I've learned that every time I hope for something regarding the release GRRM's novels I get let down. I've just accepted that the show is going to probably diverge on its own path while taking notes from what GRRM has told them. We can continue to dream together...

I'd LOVE to see the events of Robert's Rebellion...but only if they had done flashbacks in the show itself. It's obviously too late for that now, and so I have no interest in seeing a separate prequel show with entire recasts of all the familiar characters involved. That's how we got The Hobbit and the Star Wars prequels, after all.

Sometimes, less is more.

@Bl00dwerk

Is it really that good? I tried watching it but it was hard for the 1st episode to hook me, probably because I just got through binge watching Davinci's Demons at the time. I guess I'll give it another shot. I need to make list of shows I need to watch.

Aside from that, I'm excited for this upcoming season and of course Dragons!

Had they stayed faithful to the story, you know...... the [frick]ing books, the could EASILY run for 11 seasons, AT LEAST.

But, since they(the producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss) dindn't give any kind of [frick] to the fans, we're all used to this mess.

Oh, well.

You know that GRRM has blessed every single deviation from the books? As well as even going so far to say that some are an improvement on his work?

Oh hell Dany!!!!! That last pic she looks like a goddess!!! Jon snow and Tyrion look badass as well.

I'm just happy my three favorite characters have lasted this long (Dany, Jon and Tyrion). I really can't believe it since GRRM loves to kill off great characters. Looking at you...viper, Ned, Robert, Robb, Hound, tywin, Joffrey, etc etc...

Can't wait for this to start up again... To only be done in ten weeks is a sin, but I love sinning.

@MercwithMouth That doesn't mean shit.

It's like saying that we should feel ok with George Lucas' mess he made on the original trilogy, just because he's the "Creator".

if they had to stop at 7 they'd stop. they know it's more important to maintain a culture and a reputation that creatives have freedom to tell their stories without the suits meddling. game of thrones may end but by having this kind of environment, they will lure the next big cable tv show, so in the long run this is the better decision
Omegacron
Omegacron - 3/13/2015, 12:27 PM
I think they should just tell the story from the books, then stop. And as far as GRRM has said, that will basically be everyone coming to their senses and uniting against the Others. Anything else should be presented in its own spinoff series.

@LubedUp yeah I'd be down with that too, but I still think Robert's rebellion could work if it was fleshed out a bit. Honestly though, I'd watch anything in this universe, I'm too heavily invested not too :D
