It Doesn't Sound Like HBO's WATCHMEN TV Series Will Be Sticking All That Closely To The Comics

Zack Snyder delivered an extremely faithful take on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen but it doesn't sound like the TV series will as the plan is to expand the world and avoid a literal translation.

Despite the fact that 2009's Watchmen movie is a modern masterpiece, a reboot is now in the works at HBO. While there's no denying that the classic comic book series is well-suited to television, it's pretty obvious that there's not enough material to fill out more than a couple of seasons. Well, HBO President Casey Bloys has addressed that and made it clear that we're not getting a straight up adaptation here.

"I don't want to talk too much about it, but Damon is thinking about it in a way exactly as you describe it," Bloys said when IGN suggested that the main Watchmen story is suitable for only a single season of TV rather than an ongoing series. "Which is, how do you take the material and derive from it a TV show, without making it a literal translation?" So, does that mean adding new material?

"I think so, yes," Bloys responded, adding: "Damon is one of the smartest, most passionate, most thorough writers I've ever worked with so he's really thinking about this in amazing ways. Again, I don't want to talk about the details of it, but when you sit with him and you see the way his mind works it's really kind of amazing." That's interesting but it could rub some fans up the wrong way.

It sounds like the Watchmen TV series could adapt elements of Before Watchmen and generally just expand on certain scenes and moments to make the show last much longer, while also adding new content never thought of by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. How do you guys feel about this news?

Snyder' Watchmen was accurate visually, but not thematically. Adding new material is risky, but as long as it fits with the main idea of the story it could turn out alright.

This is like adapting A Tale of Two Cities but featuring five cities because two cities are only enough for one or two seasons. Smdh.

@Valdez - Not thematically? It seemed to have most of the themes of the book intact and even explored.

@Valdez - Snyder just cut off the squid, but overall he did a solid job in Watchmen. Both visually and thematically. IMO.

@Valdez - ive never understood people issues with Snyder' Watchmen it is line for line shot for shot the same with the exception of the squid. How is it not accurate thematically its exactly the same

@Ha1frican - I disagree. Story wise it's basically the same, except for the squid, but I've heard the movie described as "all text, no subtext." Snyder keeps the plot the same while removing the subtlety and meaning of the book. He made it a dark and edgy superhero story, while to me it seemed like the book was satirizing that whole concept.

All for this. Love Snyder's Watchmen and especially his designs and set pieces. I hope this show is close to his vision and I think it can be cool to stretch it out over several seasons as there's a lot they can explore like with some time spent on the Watchmen's actual adventures together before they split up.
