Snyder Defends Changes PLUS Watchmen DVD Details

In the UK, Zack Snyder and Watchmen artist David Gibbons answered questions by the press, including more of the reasoning behind losing the squid, and some of the DVD extras.

The big question: What have you got against the squid?!

Zack Snyder: I had a bad calamari experience as a child! Look I've got nothing against the squid. When I sat down with the studio and talked about the film, we had to make a decision about what stuff we included and what stuff we wouldn't. For me Watchmen is all about the characters, whereas if we included the squid, I would have to illustrate it in the story and cut out some of the character. So I wanted more character and less story.

So we came up with something else - no-one knows yet what we've done but we hope it's similar in philosophy to the ending of the graphic novel. I mean the end is all about taking a superhero all the way - you know it's the bad guy who is the one who wants world peace. It's a moral dilemma for all the characters involved.

David Gibons: The tone of the graphic novel - the message, the moral ambiguity - has still been left intact. Also it's not a squid; it's a fifth dimensional phalymapod!

How long will the movie be?

ZS: Our theatrical cut is around two-and-a-half hours. On the DVD there will probably be a three-hour cut, and a version with the 'Black Freighter' stuff [the Pirate comic running simultaneously through the plot of Watchmen] that is around three-and-a-half hours long. We'll also have the 'Under the Hood' mock documentary which we've shot. Which is supposedly shot in 1985 and about a TV show from 1972, and it has interviews with all the Watchmen, and has the comedian telling them to f**k off and so on. It's cool.

phalymapod is what the squid is called. obviously it's not mentioned in the comic so after 20 years of labeling it as a squid gibbons has i guess informed us as to what the technical term for the creature is. i'm glad to hear that "nobody knows" what they've done for the ending. maybe this means that theres no nuke's after all. and theres even still the possibility that they are leading us to belive theres no squid, when there actually is. the explosion seen in the second trailer is obviously nite owls dream of him and silk. in the new trailer there's some kind of shockwave that cracks the building of the city. teleporting phalymapod perhaps?

is that good or bad? i honestly believe that theres a lot more thought put into this campaign than everybody else believes. I call it "The Watchmen Conspiracy".read my other comments on the page when snyder announces the no squid ending. i've got a whole slew of theories as to what the outcome may be. I'm using phalymapod from now on.it sounds technical n stuff :). and c'mon guys dave gibbons supports this movie, you give alan to much credit. all those who oppose, don't give that man too much loyalty. just because he hates hollywood, doesnt mean you've got to follow in his footsteps.

yeah blacksword...that's what i've been thinking...maybe it still is a big publicity stunt, and i'm glad he's dwelling into the characters, i found that when i read the book that was the most intersting part, like for example: when Doc Manhattan was reflecting on his past, i thought that was really cool...so I still have good expectations for this movie, and i'm interested as to what the ending really is going to be like

A conspiracy? Come on seriously. Don't give Snyder that much credit. If you keep thinking that, you'll just be dissapointed when you see the ending of the movie. Might as well just accept that the ending has been mucked.

I'm glad that Snyder's including a version on the dvd with the black freightor running through it. I WISH he would also include a version with the damn squid though! Come on at least give us an alternate ending.
Your nuclear ending won't be as graphic. All the buildings will be gone and the people will be vaporized. The great thing about the squid ending is how gruesome it is. Everyone's impaled on broken buildings... bodies strewn everywhere. Squid parts are sticking out of buildings. It's looks awesome. You can't do that with a nuclear ending. You basically just end up with a desert afterwords.

I'm not setting myself up for disappointment at all. i totally think the hard evidence is pointing to the non-squid ending right now. but, there is no doubt in my mind that this whole ordeal is a marketing stunt. whether or not the stunt comes with a grand finale of happiness among fans, or we see something we knew was coming, well that will be realized march 6th. either way ill love the movie for what it is. chances are, with the whole reboot trend going on in the comic book movie world, this movie will be re-made in the future with even more watchmeniness. when zack "confirmed" the non squid ending, i wrote a whole description of what i believe is the most logical way the movie will end if it does indeed contain nukes. but watching the trailers repeatedly over and over, pausing and rewinding, some thing just don't add up. we should all know by now that the footage of the mushroom cloud where laurie kisses dan is his dream after the first night they "try" to fool around. so we haven't seen any footage of any nuclear explosions for the end of the movie yet. the only possibility is the new trailer where the shock wave causes buildings to crack and there's a big blue flash. that just doesn't scream nuke to me. it is for sure the result of ozzy's teleporter machine (which is of course in the comics, only not mentioned by name it's existence is implied) but what he teleports in the movie remains a mystery shrouded in much contradiction/controversy when it comes to online reports old and new. could be bomb, could be squid. i would not put it past snyder to film a fake ending and lie saying its the only one, or post fake online reports from supposed "early" viewers. the guy describes himself as a geek and would no doubt spend plenty of time online working it all out. but you're right when you suggest the bomb has the hardest evidence right now.

300 sucked and so will this.

Hollywood IS evil, I would rather John Waters direct with Divine's rotting corpse playing Sally Jupiter.
Anyone with any smarts should go watch Masters of the Universe if you want a real good "comic book movie", not some cheap movie version of real art.

but Dave Gibbons still rules supreme. Thankfully I can appreciate his work without hearing the smashing pumpkins.

im more pissed off with the team calling themselves watchmen than i am over the squid, i mean that really suggests the studio doesnt think an audience can comprehend the title being a metaphor..that was one of my favourite things about the comic

I agree rorschach01. I think it shows that the director himself doesn't even understand the graphic novel. If he doesn't understand it... we can't really expect him to convey WATCHMEN to people. He'll just convey another mediocre comic book movie.

well, i heard a rumour that he just had the characters say watchmen in the trailer and it will indeed be the crimebusters or the minutemen in the movie..wishfull thinking? hope not!
CrookedJaw
CrookedJaw - 11/16/2008, 11:24 AM
yeah rorschach 01, that's what i was thinkin, it makes more sense too, usually directors change things for the trailers

if dan was all like, the "crimebusters" are over, and nobody knows that's wat the team is called, it would sound super lame.

give snyder credit.
from what it looks like the movie might be half-way decent.
face it... the movie cant go on for 8 hours and he cant explain the characters in depth with the squid also.
remember no one thought this comic could be done anyways and I am really excited to see the movie, squid or not.
ive read the comic books and you cant make a movie exactly off of the comic books otherwise it would take centuries.
i am pumped for watchmen!

if you look at this movie for what it is..a movie BASED on watchmen, i guarantee you will enjoy it. but alot of the fanboys cant to that because they cant seperate the 2 mediums on this occasion because they love the comic so much and want to see it EXACTLY as is. when, in the history of book and comic adaps, has this happened?? sorry guys, just because you love something with all your heart its not going to escape the process of adaptation..nor should it. i can still open that damn masterpiece any time i want and enjoy it..the movie isnnt going to change that..and it might just get some more kids to think about reading it

It would be to confusing for people who didnt read watchman to have the Black Freighter in the movie.

People need to give Zach Snyder credit. Remember, without him Watchmen would be a "hip" modern day version. No matter the changes int he movie, the comic fans will always have the comic. Hollywood can never take that away. If you know what happens in the comic, why is it so important that it sticks to it 100x? A slight change or two won't hurt anything if they are staying to it as much as they can with all of the other aspects of the film. As long as the non-squid ending is passable, then it will be a good movie. The comic ending is in the comic no matter what.

am I the only person who thought the squid part of the comic was under-explained. Very cool and different, but it kinda just got to the chapter and there was a giant squid on an island. I know it was explained later, and the idea was to bring the story together at the end, but it still seemed a little hurredly introduced.

Personally think this movie looks awesome. I wonder what they will do with Ozmandias. Whether they will sort of make him look like a villan/radical from the start, or make it a shock like the comic.
