WATCHMEN HBO TV Series Character Breakdowns Are Most Definitely Not What Fans Will Be Expecting

We recently found out that Damon Lindelof's small-screen take on Watchmen would not be a direct adaptation of the source material, & if these breakdowns are any indication, that was a huge understatement!

We already knew that Damon Lindelof's upcoming HBO Watchmen series wouldn't be a direct adaptation of Alan Moore's classic tale, but based on some new details about the show's characters, it doesn't appear to be any kind of adaptation whatsoever.

The guys over at That Hashtag Show have shared some descriptions for the show's main players, and there doesn't appear to be a single recognisable character among them.

Angela Abraham: African-American female cop. Independent and intelligent, she's also a realist. She's married to Cal, with whom she has a daughter and is fiercely protective of them both.

Cal Abraham: African-American male who is the stay-at-home husband of Angela. While he seems at home as the king of his castle and being a loving husband and father, it's clear his past has a different story to tell.

Looking Glass: A good looking cop, the native Oklahoman isn't simple as his rural accent makes him appear to be. A top interrogator and behavioral scientist, he may also be a bit of a sociopath.

Panda: An ethnic desk cop, he's cynical and tough and puts his job first. Not a friend to many, he uses comedy to keep people at bay.

Red Scare: Mafioso, track suit wearing cop. His Russian accent lends to his abrasiveness.

Pirate Jenny: An androgynous and lustful bisexual cop, Jenny is an anarchist at heart.

Jane Crawford: The wife of the police chief, Judd, Jane is a veterinarian who's sharper than her guarded persona lets on.

Old Man: A former cop who is still an imposing figure despite his age.

So, the Watchmen TV pilot will be about... a bunch of Oklahoma police officers?

There are a couple of possibilities here. For one, the names and even the breakdowns could be faked in order to throw people off; or, the descriptions are real and the show is going to be about a bunch of Oklahoma Police officers!

If you've read Moore's comic you'll know that the cops did have a small presence, and were known for having it in for the costumed vigilantes that began to do their jobs for them. Is there a chance Lindelof and co. have based the series around that premise?

We'll just have to wait and see, but in the meantime be sure to let us know what you think in the usual place.

I guess it would be interesting to see the whole vigilante type as a villain and mainly as an obstruction of justice from the police pov, but then again I think these are fake

"Who watches the Watchmen?" Who's gonna watch this shit?

I'm down for this if it's handled well. One of the things I hated about the Watchmen movie was it being a blind panel-by-panel adaptation without regards to the film medium.

@Brave - EXACTLY

@Brave - And something that sounds as though it has nothing at all to do with the source material would be better? I mean it could be good just because is a good show, but it sounds nothing like Watchmen.

I thought the film was okay but beautiful to look at.
Thought that opening was great, and Rorschach was amazing.
Definitely felt like something was missing though, like it was close to being a good movie but not quit there.

Have no idea what this is about though?

Maybe the characters are fake but the traits are real?
Idk I thought this "He's cynical and tough and puts his job first. Not a friend to many, he uses comedy to keep people at bay" was a bit Comedian-ish.

Uh....this is [frick]ed up. I mean, I'm all for adapting Watchmen at length and taking our sweet time with it, but this just sounds like a totally different thing. And you know what? This has nothing to do with the characters' descriptions or who they are as people, but if these are the series regulars than I honestly have very little to no interest in the show. Suffice to say, based solely on this, I imagined an HBO adaptation of Watchmen to be *very* different.

Gonna have to give HBO a big "Noooo spank you" and a "Good luck" on this one, I don't see it working out.

I’d actually MUCH prefer they do something like this in universe but separate from the core story. It’s already been done as well as can be done in live action imo so if this is happening I’d rather it be something new

maybe this will be the watchmen world from the perspective of normal people

@dracula - That was one of the two possibilities the editor pointed out at the end of the article.
Saga
Saga - 4/27/2018, 6:17 PM
@dracula - that would work for a DC or Marvel universe type show. Only abnormal thing in this backdrop would be Osterman and we already know that Ozy's plan was uncovered afterwards so that wouldnt work either

@Saga - Technically we already had a show like that, Powerless, and yeah, it was mostly bad, it had one or 2 great episodes, the rest ranged from ok to crap

if you replace "cop" with "vigilante", i think you get a much clearer image of what lindelof is going for. new vigilantes in the world of watchmen. ...interesting.
Kevwebsz
Kevwebsz - 4/27/2018, 6:09 PM
@automaton - So... Maybe same world but focusing on different heroes somewhere else or post watchmen with new heroes?
