This is going to be good.

HBO has released the first trailer for Watchmen and as well as confirming that this is indeed a sequel to the original comic book series, there are some massive, jaw-dropping reveals.

For starters, Jean Smart is playing FBI Agent Laurie Blake, a character fans will know as Silk Spectre II (it seems as if she's taken her father's name and never married Nite-Owl). Then, right at the end of this sneak peek, we see that Dr. Manhattan has returned to Earth after relocating to Mars.

The question is, what does he want and is he considered a hero or a villain now?

Regardless of what the answer might be, it's clear that this isn't going to be just a standalone story set in the same world as Watchmen; it will address what happened in the original tale in a big way and that's definitely something to get excited about.

Hopefully this is good enough and popular enough so we can eventually get a live action adaptation of Doomsday Clock.

@Comicbookart - I can't imagine anyone will want to watch a show that's episodes are constantly delayed.

It's crazy just how well Lindelof's sensibilities on that show match with Moore's on Watchmen. Both projects start off with a central mystery that's ultimately only used as a jumping off point for thematic and narrative explorations, and how these seismic shifts impact the characters and world at large. Both play with their narrative form, as well as non-linearly with time with occasional excursions so far removed from the story narratively, but right in line with the rest of the series thematically.

This is why I loved Leftovers and Lost. Admittedly, I don't know much about the watchmen, but I'm intrigued.

@deathlok1982 - The season openers for season 2 and 3 of The Leftovers were such bold, ambitious pieces of television story-telling. I can only imagine what he would do with this material.

All I know about Watchmen is from the movie. So will there be a team of people with special abilities in this or is it a cops vs vigilantes deal?

OK, now my question is whether this is a sequel to the comics or to the movie? Of course, only ending is what makes the difference.

Justin Theroux as Doctor Manhattan? He's ripped enough. And he's got the wang.
