See what Zach Snyder had to say about Sucker Punch and Watchmen!

Zach Snyder talked with CBR after the first footage from his upcoming film Sucker Punch was shown to fans at Comic Con. Basically they discussed the film but the topic of Watchman critisism came up and Snyder had some interesting things to say.

Snyder on the crowds reaction to the Sucker Punch footage...

I think the crowd reaction was exactly what I would hope for. The only thing I had to gauge it on was really the girls. They hadn't seen the footage, either. They had no idea what they were going to see," he recalled. The cast includes Vanessa Hudgens, Jenna Malone, and Carla Gugino. "They were shaking and out of their minds. That was good."

On what exactly Sucker Punch is..

"It was really born from an idea I had about making this transition, visually, into a dreamworld. It just started building from there."

On criticism his film Watchmen has recieved...

"I wouldn't have made the movie any different knowing what I know now; I would've made it exactly the same way. I think that it's naïve to assume that there's another version - a more faithful version. That's one thing, for sure, you wouldn't get."

On talking to Watchman artist Dave Gibbons about his concerns about leaving out "the squid"...

"When I talked to him about it - asked him if I was crazy - he was like, 'No, [of course not]. The squid was a layer of the graphic novel that we were always afraid wouldn't work.'"

For those of you who have yet to see the trailer for Sucker Punch I have included it below.

The "squid" was the ONLY thing about the Watchmen comic I DIDN'T like. I felt that it took you out of the story, didn't feel like it was part of the same comic. Snyder's ending was brilliant and totally worked for the film.

Watchmen adapted the imagery faithfully and had MOST actors bring their A-game, but otherwise it was pretty lame as an adaption. Sucker Punch, well, I dunno. It looks imaginative and cool but not excellent.

preacher: I think "the squid" worked great in the book at the time it was written. I also think Snyder's ending worked great for the film at the time it came out.

Sucker Punch looks really wild from what I've seen. I will definitely be checking it out.

Can you imagine if Fox made Watchmen? A LOT could have gone wrong. Synder did a great job with the adaptation. I'd put the Director's Cut right next to Iron Man.

@Anil Rickly: I agree commpletely. After watching both 300 and Watchmen, I am convinced Zack Snyder would do an epic job with superman. Thats an awesome combo: A script written by Goyer and one of the Nolan brothers, directed by Snyder. It would also have freedom being a reboot and all

SERIOUSLY, IF YOU GIVE THIS GUY A PROPERTY HE WILL GIVE ITS FANS EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT, THERE WILL BE SOME THAT HATE OF COURSE, BUT THE GUY CAN DELIVER..LOOK AT THE ARTISTRY OF THE SCENES HE CREATES ALONE, THAT ISNT JUST A TALENT THATS A GIFT. TO PUSH FOR A VISION THAT PROBABLY BIG WIGS AND MONEY INVESTORS IN THE FILMS WILL WANT TO CHANGE UP, THIS GUY MAKES WHAT HE WANTS TO SEE HAPPEN.

History lesson:

When Watchmen originally came out, it received a hell of a lot of praise, of course, but the last issue and ending - and the squid in particular, came in for a fair bit of criticism too (although hugely admired, he was yet to attain 'uncriticisable' status at that time, unlike now it seems)

Many felt it was rushed (Moore was often criticised for having weak endings compared to his beginnings) and that the squid would not have resulted in the 'peace' that came about. Many felt that the squid would in fact have heightened tensions, that the Russians would suspect trickery and wouldn't be so quick to believe it as they did, especially as it would almost certainly be discovered as fake very quickly (they had genetic engineering tech. so it wouldn't be hard to analyse the squid's construction to reveal that it was all too terrestrial in origin).

As mentioned in the interview above - Moore and Gibbons knew this was a bit of a push, but Moore really wanted to put in as many comic tropes as possible - the squid being his twist on the alien invasion trope.

/history lesson

Forgive my near-blasphemy, but Snyder's solution was more believable and elegant than Moore's, without changing the actual outcome at all.

The Ultimate Cut of Watchmen takes pride of place on my DVD shelf (even had to buy it on import as it wasn't available in the UK). It isn't perfect, but it is by far the most ambitious comic to movie adaptation yet and a true work of art.

Snyder is and always will be an absolute legend in my eyes for having the balls to even try to make it and the moxy to fight the studio to make it his way, let alone pull it off as well as he did.

He's also, imo, one of the most visually striking directors out there, further evidenced by that beautiful Sucker Punch trailer.

As much as I'd love him to do Superman, I think his tastes are too 'adult' for that - he'd have Lois naked and Superman pulling arms out of sockets... actually scratch that - Snyder for Superman!! :D

KeithM- Although we do dissagree about Superman Returns, i can't help but to completely agree with every single thing you just said. I even made a review of the graphic novel prior to the film's release and my conclusion was that although Moore's work was a masterpiece for it's time, it had many flaws when read by today's eyes. And as for Snyder, he is THE visual master of the moment. There are no better visual artists in the film industry as we speek. Surely he might be surpassed eventually, but at the moment, he reigns supreme! Snyder for Superman INDEED!!!

I feel that all the boo-hooing over the movie is silly. The movie is fine and I feel just as excited to watch it now as I did when it first came out. It's not like it's Batman: Forever bad. I think we're past that kind of bad now. I hope. Even Green Lantern, though it was a little cheesy and I have never been much of a GL fan, was cool to watch. I am a comic book fan. No movie based on a comic book is going to capture the way every single fan saw it in their heads when reading it on the page. Let's just enjoy seeing how other people see things when the movies come out and, if we don't like it, just keep reading the comics.
