Confirmed: S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Pilot Takes Place After MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS

ABC President Paul Lee confirms that, despite speculation to the contrary and Agent Coulson seemingly dead, Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot will take place AFTER the events of Marvel's The Avengers. Hit the jump to read his comments.

After the apparent death of Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) in Marvel's The Avengers, many were very surprised to hear that Gregg will be playing the lovable character - who has previously appeared in Thor and the first two Iron Man films - once again for Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot for ABC. It was speculated that the potential series would be a prequel to The Avengers, and then there were the various theories of how the character could be resurrected (Gregg mentioned "life model decoys" last fall when his casting was confirmed). Now, speaking with IGN, ABC President Paul Lee was asked how Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. would tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he reveals that the pilot (which has yet to be picked up for a full series) will actually take place after the final battle in The Avengers. "There is no question that it is part of the Marvel Universe. In fact, the story takes place after the battle for New York." Despite its connection to the MCU, Lee reiterates that it's more stand-alone. "This is S.H.I.E.L.D. They’re following their own particular stories. There are characters in it, Coulson, who clearly comes from Avengers. So it’s part of the world, but we’re going to be very, very careful that we don’t tread on the toes of the features and build a whole new world. And that’s what Joss Whedon does better than anybody else. He’s built a world for us."

Additionally, when asked about the possibility of introducing certain Marvel characters on the series if picked up, Lee remains optimistic. "I think if we’re lucky enough to have a great series, we’re obviously having fun with that. At this point though, we have a number of characters at the heart of the script who are real characters, who are the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the first task is to make those guys great and relatable and everything that a great show needs. Beyond that, fingers crossed!" Filming on the Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot will begin next week, with hopes to air on ABC this Fall.

Yeah, he had to be a life model decoy then. Otherwise, this makes no sense to appear after The Avengers

I think he'll appear in flashback scenes or something.

Well they're gonna have to do something pretty impressive to bring Coulson back and people perceive it well, because his death was the whole reason the Avengers decide to "Avenge"

So the pilot will take place after the avengers movie and coulsen will be in it.
How about starting the episode with the funeral of coulsen. All the agents would gather so we have an opportunity to get to know everyone and get a moment to say goodbye to one of the greatest agents.

Whedon said Coulson will headline the SERIES, so it means he will have a consistent presence. I dont think they can have a flashback every other episode.

Not sure how I feel about this. I love Coulson but how are they going to pull this off? Leave out the cheesy plot devices. If it is a life model decoy I will be peeved. The scene in Avengers will lose all emotional resonance. I would much rather that Fury just plain lied.

I still think it would be amazing if when Ultron creates Vision, he makes his face resemble Coulson to piss off and anger the Avengers. That would be a sob story worth of Disney... Oh wait... :)

I hope they remember that only Comic Book readers are NOT the viewers!

It was already pretty strange thing to see CAP going, i mean crashing into ice (in 1940s) & coming out Alive (2012)... That's still a massive massive leap that was taken in a blip! I remember people in theatre looking & whispering to each other on that; even my friend got shocked!
So they better not do that crap again!

The feeling of Coulson's death being cheap is one I'm sure we are supposed to feel. This isn't a meaningless retcon to appease the story. Go back and watch the scene with Fury, Cap, Stark and Hill. Tony and Maria don't buy what Nick says, and Steve is all ears (old-fashioned notion).

You can bet the other Avengers will not take the news of Coulson's death lightly, just as the audience isn't now. It will be a personal pain shared by the Avengers, which is in line with what Whedon has said about the Avengers 2.

We never see a body and have to take Fury at his word, which according to the movie, we shouldn't do. In short, COULSON LIVES.

I love the character and the actor but I'm really worried about this for the same reasons as everyone else here.

I can't see them going with a LMD though, I mean there's no way they can start the show saying that Coulson is really alive.

Not only would it take away from the movie but then it needs to be addressed again to all the Avengers when they see him again. Plus in the future when anyone dies we'd all be wondering if it's a LMD, it's just too much.

I'm thinking they'll do it like Lost where half the show is present day and half is pre-Avengers with Coulson around.

As soon as Fury admitted he lied about the Captain America trading cards, I assumed he also lied about Coulson's death. After all, we never actually saw him pronounced dead. We just saw him lose consciousness as the medics were arriving.

I'm sure what Whedon say will happen is that the medics patched Coulson up and then he got sent off to head up a SHIELD station where he doesn't have any contact with the Avengers and they never learn that he's actually alive.

They will have to bring in a few C and D grade Avengers to carry the show at some point...

How fast will this show become before it is boring enough to be a cross between a cop show and a some Sci Fi mess...

Not touching on the Movie characters is a total ripp off for the fans...

I think Coulsons final line was supposed to be "if they didn't have something to avenge." And since he was Furys 'good eye' I'm sure Nick read between the lines after Coulson went unconscious and made up his lie to get his Avengers together. He's THE spy after all.

Been screaming all along he never died. We never saw him die, we saw him black out. Then the SHIELD "Super Medics" Arrived. So an agency with tech 50+ years more then us can handle that right? Not to mention brain death is a bit AFTER that so...he never died, and Fury showed he was willing to manipulate the death using the cards...FURY LIES...COULSON LIVES...
