EDITORIAL: Idea For Tie-In Comics To Marvel's AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D

This season, we were introduced to Joss Whedon's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The show has received mixed reactions across the board. Here is an idea I had to help improve the experience of the show.

Editorial Opinion

Joss Whedon's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has received a mix reception from critics and fans alike. Everything ranging from "I love it," to "it's ok" to "it's not bad but it's not great" to "worst show ever." Honestly, the reception has surprised me more than anything about the show. Usually, the CB fan community has a pretty universal response to films and television. For example, it is agreed among the entire CB fan community that Batman and Robin and Green Lantern are utterly terrible films. But, despite the vastly differing opinions about the show, everyone agrees that there is improvement to be made. For example, one of the common consensuses is that the show should replace the character of Ward- given last week's episode, opinions about Ward have started to change a bit, but I remain unconvinced.

This article, is to present an idea I had that could possibly help improve the show. As I said before, we all agree that the show has positive qualities, and negative qualities. In my opinion, one of the shows greatest highlights is, Melinda May, played by Chinese American actress Ming-Na Wen. In my opinion, May is one of the best thing's about the show. She's also my personal favorite character. Ming-Na brings a lot to the table when she plays May. Quiet and reserved, her stone faced performance is anything but cardboard (unlike Agent Ward). The writing for May is also great. She's this character shrouded in mystery. She doesn't talk about her past, but when she does, it's in the most minute detail. This, I believe, has gotten viewers hooked on the character of May. So, how could this possible improve the show? I'm getting to that.

In the pilot episode, when Coulson was assembling his team, May was adamant that she did not want to go back into the field. Why? Later, still in the pilot episode, after beating down a guy, Ward reveals that May was apart of an elite special ops team (I forget what the specific name of the team is, I haven't seen the pilot in forever).

Another small hint about May's past was revealed in last week's episode which was set after the event's of Thor: The Dark World. May was able to wield an Asgardian staff without succumbing to the effects of the rage imbued within it. The way the staff works is that the wielder relives a moment when he or she felt their greatest pain and regret, and they gain power from the rage that they felt. After the ordeal, Ward asked how she was able to handle seeing this painful memory. May's response is, "I see it every day." This is great writing! It gives a little bit of mystery to the character without revealing too much.

While it's inevitable that the show will explore May's past, my idea for improving the show is slightly different. How about Marvel writes a prequel comic about May's life before she joined Coulson's team. And this comic could delve into May's past. Back when she was a member of that special ops team. What that memory she sees is. It could help give us a complete picture of Melinda May.

What do you guys think? I don't often write editorials so I'm sorry this is so short. As always, reviews and thumbs up are appreciated.

Great editorial. Though I think a prequel episode will take place rather than a comic book. Hopefully one day we might actually get a complete backstory on Fury himself. As for now, 'Tahiti' is the only reason I'm still watching.

The show is good. Its patient, they have the time to slowly develop there characters.

I Think the worst part about the show is the fact that they start a new plot point and don't get back to it for a few weeks as they start another one. That and the fact that the writing isn't that great.

I guess that the only reason why I find myself watching the show every week is because it is in the MCU, and I desperately hope for crossovers and ties.

How about an actual Agent of SHIELD or a Hero

I actually like the agent of shield and its tone, it has a nice balance of comedy and seriousness. I kinda wish the Avengers would have had the same tone instead of just being some kind of comicbook farce. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the Avengers but the comedy was just to much.

Plus the whole Tahiti and Skye looking for her parent's storyline is intriguing enough to keep my interest.

SHORT ANSWER:

cancel it.

pretend it never happened.

start a new, unrelated show with agent coulson and one or two sidekicks. like the two kids from "item 47".

i agree. Also I would like to see Cobie Smulders' character replace Agent Coulson once How I Met Your Mother is done. Seriously, Agent Coulson is lame.

Breaking Bad gave us Walter White; and within one episode, we cared deeply for him. don't tell about the time they have to slowly and eventually "get it right". It's a shit show all around.

I had an almost identical editorial waiting to type up!
Regardless, great right up man, I'm sticking with AoS all season, don't care how good or bad it gets, I need my fill of live action Ccomic book TV shows

Add a b-list character to the show at least.

None of the cast are interesting. They are average career TV actors playing generic TV roles that happen to be set in the scrap yard of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The 1st error regarding AOS was it's premise. Since it's set in current Marvel time it was doomed to look like a second rate version of the films. So IF they were going to do a SHIELD series it needed to be set before Iron Man.
The show has little to say. We have a SHIELD crew running around looking for superguy of the week and thats about it.
If Disney wanted to do a Marvel show they should've done something that wouldn't be such an easy effort. They needed to tell a new story that doesn't rely on the movies.
SHIELD also is very NSA, CIAish. Smart people don't look at those guys as the good guys. Many of us are disinterested in shows the make shadow governments look like the good guys. And amazingly SHIELD seems less organized, controlled and professional in the series than in the films. The show has kind of made them into nothing more than libidos in suits.

This show has nothing going for it. It's just more Marvel. That's the only draw. And that's not much of a draw unless you're 6 years old.

Was it just me or was anybody else hopeing that Coulson's team was gonna go after that thing from the very last instant of the post credits scene from Thor2?

@MCott, only you and the majority of Marvelites agree about your views on the GL movie, but you don't speak for everyone. Get lost.

Fits and Simmons are definitely my favorite characters thus far. Outside of Coulson.

The fact that I actually gave a crap about Simmons life in "FZZT", after 5 episodes is a testament to the writing and her acting.

Hey skull boy, I consider myself a marvellite and I did not hate Green Lantern, I'm not the world's best movie critic but it was what it was to me. A superhero story.

But then again I like daredevil also.

@skullboy, if you read my article I said that it was an example of a common opinion among CB fans.

@everyone else you know it's funny. I wrote this article about a specific idea for the show. And instead, everyone is just talking about the show.

You know, I was actually hoping people would talk about my idea for a Melinda May prequel comic. That's the idea I was talking about.

It may just be my opinion, but I think May is one of the best written and best performed characters on the show.

Great thought provoking article. Yes an indepth Agent May backstory would be a very compelling and interesting storyline. Maybe her unit was part of a failed super serum expiriment and she was the only one who survived, or maybe a failed mission where she watched thousands of innocents perish and was powerless to stop it and/or was partly responsible.

The past couple episodes have been getting better imo. I like May as well and I can't stand Ward(the actor and the character). We all want names we know to show up and be a factor. Not all new characters :-( The cameos aren't enough, seeing Fury and Hill was good, but we need more!

I thought this was one of those editorials where some fanboy with his head half way up his ass tries to "fix" the story before it's even told. l love this show already and I'm excited to see where it's going.

That being said; great idea! I would love to see comic tie ins for all the characters. Maybe a series of one shots that can come out during the months between seasons.

Chloe is the one who needs to go. Fitz and Simmons can do her job, she is redundant and a the production comes to a screeching halt when she is given screen time. And it's not just the writing.

Melinda May is a great character, she's the "charismatic bass player" in the band and she deserve to be developed as well.
Yes, I assume the idea of the prequel comic book

Anyway less humiliating then "no, this show is not related with the cinematic universe" one.
diabolik

the show is slowly improving but not fast enough, i agree with the May character. it need more room to develop and its the most interesting character. People need to know more about Coulson too. The mystery about his resurrection. Need to do something about that cause people are loosing interest in him, quickly. Tie in comics? good idea but perhaps it need more. they have the source to pick material from, they should push the envelope more.
