How AGENTS OF SHIELD Can Improve

Hey CBM-ers, it's me, The Incredible Hulksta. I'm here to detail how Marvels Agents of SHIELD can improve. Read about where and how I think Marvel can turn the show around.

With Marvel and ABC now wrapping up the first half of Agents Of SHIELD's first season, I'm left wondering where the network and Marvel Studios will take things. I think it's generally well known that the show has missed the mark in a few areas, and while I agree, I definitely think that the show is not an immediate write-off. So I humbly present to you my suggestions for how the show can improve.

Oh, and obviously SPOILERS for the first half of the season.

USE THE ROSTER

My biggest complaint against Agents Of SHIELD is that the show often forgets that it belongs in the Marvel universe. While you get to see Agent Coulson every week, and we had episodes like the Asgardian episode or the one with Graviton; there's a lot of stuff involving people and objects made for the show.

While a show like Arrow is not my favourite show (sorry!) it does at least utilize characters from the DC universe and the comics. While it may not be perfect in it's execution, there's something to be said for the excitement regarding seeing characters like Deathstroke or Solomon Grundy on-screen. I don't quite get that same level of excitement from SHIELD. In fact, it almost seems like the show manages to miss more opportunities to include characters then it does to hit the mark. This is also not to say that every week a pre-established Marvel character should show up; but there are too few to make it 'must-see' TV.

The show needs to find better ways of incorporating some characters into the 'Case of the Week' that they seem to rely on. Can't there be a two-part episode with Taskmaster? Why not have Blade and the Agents team up to take down some vampire lord? This is the ultimate failing of SHIELD is that it takes a character that should appear in the show, and replaces them with a nobody.

MAKE THE CHARACTERS INTERESTING

Very few times in the first half of the season, the show has failed to create three dimensional characters. Most of these characters can be described in very basic terms, they aren't complex, or show motivations and drive for anything except the mission. The episode where Agent Ward and Fitz went into the field, only because we finally got some characterization for Fitz, a character who was for a while was essentially the Q of the team.

Even as the last episode ended, we got that clear deceleration that the show was finally going to address the death and resurrection of Coulson. Which I thought was pretty funny in how the show is at the point of teasing us with characterization.

The show needs to do better then the biggest stories for May and Ward being that they slept together and perhaps enjoyed it. Although it's Agent Ward, something tells me he underperformed.

NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS A BOW

While the show has ongoing stories and unresolved things that need answers; the show does seem eager to resolve immediate stories right away. When I think on the first half, I actually enjoyed the last episode mainly because we once again saw Mike Peterson brought back in an interesting fashion. I want the show to do this more; it shouldn't be afraid to have more endings like 'The Asset' where characters are left to be brought back later.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

While many people are quick to write off the show, I think Agents Of SHIELD isn't so much a bad show as it is a show that is missing marks that it can easily hit. Moreso then any other show before it, it has unprecedented access to a wealth of Marvel characters and can really make an enriching and rewarding experience for Marvel fans and fans of great action-adventure shows. Instead, we're just getting 'meh' characters and 'meh' action.

The last episode gave me hope that the show can and will improve, but it's not easy. The show has to prove that it can exist in a universe where we have seen The Avengers; something that for many years (err, decades) seemed like an impossible pipe dream. Something possible but out of grasp. you can't just show the impossible and then limit things; you have to keep letting the imagination soar and try new things, daring things. It's still not too late, so I refuse to write the show off.

AoS is doing fine. Yeah, they need to improve, but all first year shows do. And don't worry about the ratings. I saw an article in the most recent edition of TV Guide that their ratings double when factoring in DVR use, especially for the key 18-49 demographic. That is what networks and advertisers are looking at, so unless it starts dropping quite a bit, I would bet they give it one more season.

I agree, I think one reason they aren't using any real characters is that they are afraid that they will want to use them later. But I don't see why they cant use Baron Vn Strucker or Baron Zemo, or USAgent or Sin or Blade or Taskmaster or Grim Reaper or Black Widow II or Blizard or Bullseye or Captain Britain or Union Jack Deathlok or Cloak/Dagger or Crimson Dynamo or Darkhawk or Punisher or Doc Samson or Dr Druid or Absorbing Man or Rick Jones or Thunderstrike or Songbird or Patriot or Namor or Moon Knight or Radioactive Man or Marvel Boy or a new Mandarin or Man Thing or Madam Masque or Ghost or Mad Thinker or Longshot or Living Laser or Unicorn or Wonder Man or Kingpin or Wiccan or Wendigo or Madam Hydra or Titanium Man or The Thunderbolts or Temugin or STILT MAN

I pretty much agree with these - particularly 'the bow' issue. The show seems to both move too fast and too slowly at the same time. That can basically be summed up as scenes moving along too rapidly without anything developing whilst still being dull in places. Too much exposition/chatting stuff in such a short space of time (45 minutes and episode!).

However, with regard to its place in the MCU I wish it would have a bit more conviction with its premise. I think it mentions The Avengers and Marvel characters too much. You can't show us this stuff so don't mention it - except for the big moments for a 'wow factor' in the series. Otherwise you end up with a 'Clint Barton Moment' in Thor which is pointless and bewildering for people unfamiliar with the MCU.

What you guys seem to be missing is that the show lacks character and good writing. You can have all the Marvel characters you want on the show but without good writing, it wont improve much beyond the Geek factor of having that character on screen.

As much as I dislike the show, I keep watching it because I want to see it do well. The past few episodes have gotten a little better because the story has revolved around the characters and not the other way around. We are starting to get deeper into what makes this team a team and that is a good thing.

@Lhrnbk- No, not all shows have weak first seasons. Look at the original NCIS or Criminal Minds. Both shows were strong right from the start and have only gotten better.

Rise hope for the show. The last episode was very good, even the fight scene. Hope for the second half and a quit of hyatus. 3 stops in half season are really annoyng.

The midsession finale was alright, but it felt more like the first part of a two parter. Yeah Ciulson was kidnapped but it wasn't a huge big shock reveal moment. And Mike Peterson "died" but we weren't given enough time with him in the show to actually care about him and I don't think he is actually dead. So or could have done better. It's just strange to see replacements of comic characters with original ones. Like the asgardian episode could have totally been about the Villain group the Wrecking Crew, because I doubt we would ever see them in A Thor film. And of tey don't bring graviton back then his inclusion was pointless. Also why can they believe I. Gods and giant green rage monsters but telepathy has to be fake? Never liked that in fiction.

Nice read! Great points. There are literally hundreds of characters that Marvel has the rights to that will never end up on the big screen. Why not use them. Even the ones that have had movies, but aren't getting other ones like Blade, Hulk, Punisher and Ghost Rider. This show could be GREAT, and that is the problem.

Everyone praises Arrow because its a D-List character in a contained universe. Low expectation + good return = Great show. On the other side there's AoS. Movie Star (Coulson) in a shared universe with the Avengers. High Expectations + not bad, but lackluster returns = Disappointing show.

Overall the show isn't THAT bad, it just isn't "WOW" either. I think they just need to abandon the "case of the week" format and move a saga format with overlapping story arcs. It worked for "heroes" and "Lost" and "TWD" and "Game of Thrones". Even Smallville became ALOT better when they dropped the "Monster/villain of the week" and that show lasted 10 seasons. If they did that one thing, they'd only have to introduce a handful of new/comic characters each season.

As far as the other major complaints, humor and Avengers name dropping, they don't need to stop but they could definitely cut WAY back on both. It comes down to balance. There's not necessarily too much humor as much as there is too little high drama, suspense and action. the show should be an action/drama with SOME humor. Its the same with the name-dropping. The real problem is that we get a lot more comic/powered name drops than we get comic/powered character drops and it comes off as kind of a tease.

Everyone is complaining like "Oh this show needs a hero." And stuff like that. Honestly, I actually LIKE that the show doesn't revolve around a superhero team. It would just feel too much like an Avengers repeat. Also, the fact that the team isn't super-powered presents harder obstacles for them to overcome.

Someone said before me: the show don't need tons of known character, need better writings, better and more complex story a more attention to the writings (example: episode 10, the best so far. Ward vs a super killer filled with extremis. he get a punch, a Super punch..and he's not dead. come on.)

In my opinion, Melinda May is the show's best written character

Maybe if they included THE ARROW as a guest character they would do better ;) even Felicity doing a cameo would help them get better rating numbers ;)

@badmuffin - I agree that the lack of marvel characters doesn't make the show bad. However, it does make it very disappointing. If marvel/disney wanted to make a "Fringe" type show about shield agents without using a lot of marvel characters then so be it. Then they don't need the constant mcu references or even say that its connected to the movies. But they do it to get people to watch.

Since the producers went as far as to say the show is a part of the MCU shared universe, its only fair that the fans expect the same from the show as we do the movies. A universe populated by and effected by marvel characters. Otherwise, what's the point of a shared universe?

For example, what if instead of an Avengers movie, we just got a movie about shield agents stopping loki and they just referenced the other heroes and events instead of bringing them together? Lame, right???

Great editorial I completely agree with all your points. The show will hopefully or gradually improve but personally i did not enjoy the show and stopped watching. Just the lack of interesting characters and the characters coming off as cliche. Skye is annoying to watch as she reminds me of Darcy. I think if the show made use of actual agents from the comics it would be better.

The show missed its opportunity from the get-go.
The formula carved a "niche" (and a horrible one too) for its characters to fall into habit, doing stupid things only for the sake of this IDEA that they're a team of specialists.

This is to say that a few civilians making up half the cast is an awful choice. They aren't interesting, and are just annoying foils for dull-faced field agents.

Coulson could have been like the Doctor, as an explorer and problem-solver, who loves a challenge, and wants to do more than shoot people. Here, Coulson just tells people what to do, and has a history that we'll never see.

It's all a waste.

Blah, blah, blah, more Marvel characters, more multi-episode arcs...

Is there anything new in this editorial? Or were you just rehashing everything that AoS's detractors say in comments?

Just because of this, I'm going to rehash my comments from my past threads.

Why does a Marvel show need known Marvel characters? They've been writing amazing NEW characters for what, 60 years? Fanboys can't take the opportunity to try to relate to a character they've never heard of?

As far as the multi episode arcs, hmmm...

Oh yeah, we're smack-[frick]ing-dab in the middle of one! Centipede was introduced in the pilot, continued with the "Girl in a Flower Dress" episode, and now with the midseason finale. That gets you your multi episode arc and your "big bad" all wrapped up in a neat little package.

Now, the people with specific complaints about writing, and fight choreography, they have legitimate concerns, and AoS does need to step up some of the technical aspects of the show. I for one, love this show, and have since the pilot. But I take it for what it is, and entertaining, easter egg filled, FUN waste of an hour. Isn't that what TV is? Just something to keep us from having to talk to humans?

I love that AoS doesn't take itself so seriously (like Arrow, which if you like, that's great, I don't, but I see the merits). It feels so much like a 60's-70's comic book. It's campy, it's funny, it has action, drama, romance...

So, if your complaints are lack of known characters, go call the whambulance.

What most fanboys don't understand, is that bringing in SHIELD agents from the comics will not help AoS much, for 2 reasons...

1 - It doesn't need a ratings boost to survive. It's already ABC's top-rated new show, and is consistently in the top 3 for Tuesday primetime(it even beats the Voice)

2 - The majority of the show's audience is the GA, who wouldn't have a CLUE who these Agents are anyway. All it would be is a fanboy nod.

Shinanigans! Would you be cool if half of the Avengers were not from the comics? Shared universe, right? OR if none of them had powers at all?
MercwithMouth

@MoonDoggy

Yes! That's the whole point. Marvel is marvel, they can create any character they want, and guess what, it's still a Marvel character!

That's what nobody seems to understand. All they're doing is creating new characters for a new medium. It's not like you're gonna see Fitz/Simmons in avengers.
