It has been quite a journey for Phil Coulson. After facing his death in
The Avengers, the character came back to the MCU through
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2013. Though the first season was rough, the Marvel television show has earned the respect of many devoted fans, constantly reinventing itself and retaining its title as the most underrated show in the superhero catalog.
Unfortunately, the series may be coming to an end through cancellation after Season 5. But if this is the case, Marvel and showrunner Jed Whedon are ready.
We are in process… We’re ready for if this is the end. We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way. We can certainly pivot and there are certain things that we’re putting in that at the last minute could be adjusted. But we know at the end we’re not moving off that mark. We’re going to do what we were planning to do, and I think that it’ll be thrilling either way. I think that nothing will be the same after [the 100th episode], so that I guess is the definition of a game changer.
As the Season began, the Agents were facing the end of the world, but as ratings decline it may soon be the end of
their world.
If the show does get cancelled it will be interesting to see if fans will ever see these characters again. It is possible that some may be appearing on the new Disney streaming service where Marvel is sure to challenge fans with another high-budget offering. This is all uncertain at this point. Hopefully the show will be renewed, but fans do acknoledge it has been lucky to have gotten this far.
Knowing Whedon and the improvement the series has been showing,
Agents is sure to end with a bang.
