In the season finale of Hawkeye, we learned that Linda Cardellini's Laura Barton was once an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Her designation? Agent 19. Comic book fans will know that number belonged to Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird in the comic books, a character who would actually end up getting married to Clint Barton. So, it now seems clear that Laura and Bobbi are meant to be one and the same.
We're not sure what that means for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but "Laura" being hidden away on that farm certainly makes sense if she also spent years operating undercover for Nick Fury.
Talking to Marvel.com, Hawkeye director Rhys Thomas addressed the big twist and being able to pluck that part of Clint's history from the source material. "That's what's exciting about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's Marvel, and the comics are so deep. It's a universe. What I love is that these ideas could get introduced as we were sort of prepping the show."
"We've seen her over these years as his wife, and there was obviously a desire [to expand her backstory]," the filmmaker continued. "We should know more about her. There's more to her than just staying at home with the kids. It was a fun little thing to tease out over the season and again a nice little payoff that hopefully promises more of a character planted at the end."
It sounds like Thomas is optimistic that Laura's past could be explored down the line, and there's certainly a hope among fans that she could see some action in the not too distant future. Flashbacks could quite easily show Cardellini suited up as Mockingbird, though given Clint's lack of interest in superhero costumes, chances are she wasn't taking down bad guys in a comic accurate suit.
Are you hoping to see more of the MCU's Mockingbird down the line?
