HAWKEYE Director Rhys Thomas Talks Laura Barton Twist And Hopes To See It Expanded On In Future - SPOILERS

Hawkeye director Rhys Thomas has talked more about the big Laura Barton twist in the show's finale, teasing that we could see more of her past in a future project. Find out what he had to say right here...

In the season finale of Hawkeye, we learned that Linda Cardellini's Laura Barton was once an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Her designation? Agent 19. Comic book fans will know that number belonged to Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird in the comic books, a character who would actually end up getting married to Clint Barton. So, it now seems clear that Laura and Bobbi are meant to be one and the same.

We're not sure what that means for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but "Laura" being hidden away on that farm certainly makes sense if she also spent years operating undercover for Nick Fury.

Talking to Marvel.com, Hawkeye director Rhys Thomas addressed the big twist and being able to pluck that part of Clint's history from the source material. "That's what's exciting about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's Marvel, and the comics are so deep. It's a universe. What I love is that these ideas could get introduced as we were sort of prepping the show."

"We've seen her over these years as his wife, and there was obviously a desire [to expand her backstory]," the filmmaker continued. "We should know more about her. There's more to her than just staying at home with the kids. It was a fun little thing to tease out over the season and again a nice little payoff that hopefully promises more of a character planted at the end."

It sounds like Thomas is optimistic that Laura's past could be explored down the line, and there's certainly a hope among fans that she could see some action in the not too distant future. Flashbacks could quite easily show Cardellini suited up as Mockingbird, though given Clint's lack of interest in superhero costumes, chances are she wasn't taking down bad guys in a comic accurate suit.

Are you hoping to see more of the MCU's Mockingbird down the line?

''it's clear now that Laura and Bobbi are meant to be one and the same''

No it's not. My guess it is more of a fun nod to the comics. Bobbi Morse can still exist seperately, especially given that the MCU has changed monikers before (Ghost, Power Broker, Iron Patriot)

@bkmeijer - I hope that’s what this is. It becomes kind of much when everyone is secretly a superhero level agent. There should be supporting characters that are just normal people. If they are written and acted well and mean something to the main characters they won’t be ‘boring or shallow’ just because they can’t beat people up.

I like Clint and Laura’s dynamic as is. I feel like she is Clint’s connection to the normal world, she grounds him. Making her another superhero would kinda ruin that.
We saw in this she was able to help him with some stuff remotely but I liked to think of that as her being savvy and having picked up a few things over the years by being his silent partner, and/or maybe she was an intell personnel with shield, and that’s how they met. Again, I think it adds more to hawkeye’s character if they had a normal meeting and dating experience: meeting at work, there was a spark, they went out, etc. No crazy superhero dramatics.

@Spiderfan2226 - exactly. I don't mind Laura having worked for SHIELD, but not everyone within SHIELD was some big time superhero agent indeed

@bkmeijer - Was just about to comment pretty much the exact same thing. Her past as Agent 19 is probably just an Easter Egg that nods at Clint and Bobbi's relationship in the comics, but Bobbi could still quite easily exist in the MCU as an entirely separate character.

@JoshWilding

"We're not sure what that means for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

Well you seemed pretty sure about what it means in your article the other day, or are you saying now that the other article written by you was merely vague guessing and pure clickbait?
Just curious :)

I think Bobbi was infiltrated in Fisk's organization. So, she was discovered and she entered the agent relocation program. As part of the agent relocation program, she was given the name Laura.

bkmeijer2 - 12/28/2021, 7:47 AM
@Repian - it did seem like there was a connection between Laura('s watch) and Fisk, but nothing that needed her to be Bobbi or get a different name.

The way Clint talked about the watch made me think she was gonna be discovered only if the watch was found. And we all know that didn't end up happening.

I watched and enjoyed AoS like many others on this site, but this is honestly for the best. There was nothing introduced in that show that's worth carrying over to the main MCU at this point.

The darkhold, Ghost Rider, Viper, Deathlok, Absorbing Man, Mockingbird, Inhumans and Graviton should all be rebooted if/when they're re-introduced to general audiences.

hummingbird68 - 12/28/2021, 7:43 AM
@Allabin - I don't think you're wrong particularly in regards to Mockingbird, but this is a dead end for the character. Hawkeye has wanted to retire for ages now and we've known for sometime that this show was his swansong. How and why would they move forward with Mockingbird as a character ...... she comes out of retirement because?
Allabin
Allabin - 12/28/2021, 8:00 AM
@hummingbird68 - @hummingbird68 - I agree with you there. My only guesses for a future Mockingbird apperance are either a one-off west coast avengers crossover, or a prequel with younger actors playing Clint and Laura/Bobbi.
Kyos
Kyos - 12/28/2021, 9:32 AM
@Allabin - Or... OR they could just use (variants of) these already established characters. There's still hundreds of completely unused characters in the Marvel catalogue, so why not keep a handful of lesser characters in tune with the first ever MCU show? They'd lose barely anything with it, and keep part of their existing fanbase happy.

@hummingbird68 - you say that like Hawkeye didnt already retired like 3 times before lol, also that wasnt stated anywhere and I guarantee you we hadnt see the last of him by any stretch.

I have a crackpot theory that we might see the West Coast Avengers assemble in Quantumania to save Scott, Hope and Janet from Kangs TVA. A roster is sorta complete:

Hank Pym
War Machine
Hawkeye
Mockingbird
Moon Knight
Vision
Scarlet Witch (maybe)
U.S. Agent (maybe)

Emphasize on *crackpot

bkmeijer2 - 12/28/2021, 8:41 AM
@Allabin - I'd take off Moon Knight and throw Shang-Chi in there.

Would be great to see Rhodey just be there to make sarcastic remarks

MrMediocre - 12/28/2021, 9:23 AM
@Allabin - I know the show isn't out yet, but I don't think Moonie fits here.

If anything, I can see him aligning with Blade and Black Knight, leading to an eventual Midnight Sons.

Just a matter of time.

The day when they'll be FORCED to 100% put their foot on the ground and make it absolutely clear whether AoS is canon or not is not that far away.

And then fear will find you and

Did anyone else feel this was just kinda lifeless? Like there was action and stuff happened and Kingpin, but it didnt feel energized. Clint (or maybe it was just Renner) felt tired and bored so the whole show felt that way. Thank God for Steinfeld and Pugh
YonnyLayna
YonnyLayna - 12/28/2021, 11:18 AM
I mean why not have both? Cardelini as Agent 19 and also introducing a variant of Pallickis Mockingbird latter that is not behold to Renner's Hawkeye staying or not 2 badass female characters and everyone is Happy.

“though given Clint's lack of interest in superhero costumes, chances are she wasn't taking down bad guys in a comic accurate suit.”

So Clint controls what Laura wore is what you’re saying? This conjecture makes zero sense.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 12/28/2021, 3:02 PM
For me it felt like a nod to comic book Bobbi Morse but until more is presented it would be jumping the gun to say Laura Barton here is an amalgamation of Mockingbird.

AoS's Bobbi is still canon until something more concrete states otherwise.
asherman93
asherman93 - 12/30/2021, 1:03 AM
@NinnesMBC - If it were up to me, I’d make Laura into Bobbi’s predecessor, and she passed on the mantle of Mockingbird after suffering an injury that forced her to retire.
