Loki season 2 finally premiered on Disney+ yesterday evening and the stage has been set for what looks set to be an incredibly exciting Multiversal adventure for the God of Mischief.
A creative team change doesn't appear to have hurt the series in any way, with directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead stepping in to take the helm of the first episode in place of season 1's Kate Herron. Eric Martin, meanwhile, has replaced Michael Waldron as Loki's Head Writer.
If Benson and Moorhead's names ring a bell, it's likely because they previously worked on Moon Knight for Marvel Studios. They helmed two of six episodes and managed to sneak a clever Marc Spector-related Easter Egg into "Ouroboros."
When we catch up with TVA agent Casey, listen closely, and you'll notice that he's listening to the same self-help recordings that Steven Grant used in Moon Knight. Like in that series, the woman's voice says, "Solving puzzles is a great way to keep your mind awake."
ComicBook.com spoke with Loki executive producer Kevin Wright and learned how Benson and Moorhead made the leap from Moon Knight to the God of Mischief's show.
"They went on the Moon Knight and it was like this really kind of full circle path of they were doing additional photography on Moon Knight and we had a number of scripts already ready to go on Loki and sent Kevin Feige to go recruit them off the set of Moon Knight and be like, 'Hey, see if they want to come in and meet with Tom and I about Loki season two.'"
"I think there was some trepidation of, 'Do we want to come into a season two?' They took the meeting thankfully with Tom and me and we were able to convince them why we thought they'd be great for it, but we wanted them to change it up a little bit. There was no point in doing the same thing again."
Despite this fun nod to Moon Knight, we wouldn't bank on the hero making an appearance here. In fact, there's still no word on when or where we'll see the character again as Marvel Studios hasn't officially announced whether Oscar Isaac has any intentions to reprise the role.
It would be a tremendous waste if Moony doesn't return, particularly after that big Jake Lockley tease. We've heard rumblings about him showing up in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, though nothing is confirmed on that front.
The first episode of Loki season 2 is now streaming on Disney+.
