Chatting recently with SHH, Isaiah Mustafa, the actor branded as the "Old Spice Guy", reiterated his interest in taking lead in Marvel Studios' tentative Luke Cage movie, meeting with the studio, as well why hes keen on the 'Power Man' in particular.

Are you trying to get meetings with Marvel?
"I've already had a meeting with Marvel. I talked to them and I told them that I was a gracious reader of their comics and that I wanted to be Luke Cage. So we'll see where they take it."

We see it, but why Luke Cage? There are a handful of heroes over there that you might be also right for, but why him in particular?
"When you say “handful” you're not joking around, but it's because what's going on with him right now in the Marvel Universe. I think all their [early black] characters were these Blacksploitation characters – these jokey, clownish characters – but now they've really developed the African-American characters. Luke Cage has a lot going on. He's this man, he's got all these powers and abilities and he can use them to save whatever major city, but instead of doing that he uses them to help Harlem. He wants to fix his neighborhood, and that's what's so admirable to me. Instead of leaving and going someplace bigger, he stays right where he needs to be and tries to do the best that they can.",

Does Marvel currently have something actively cooking for Luke Cage, or are you trying to help them get a film off the ground?
They have something in mind, I think, and I definitely want them to see that I'm extremely passionate about it. I'm extremely passionate about being that character. I will do anything to get that role. It strikes me. It's very personal to me. I hold onto it. It's something that I desire more than just about anything that I can think of right now, as far as work goes.

Is there anything over at DC?
"I mean, you have to pick what team you're on, and I don't want to say that I'm not a DC guy, but I definitely grew up a Marvel maniac. That's what I read all the time. I don't want to say that I don't like Superman, Batman, Aquaman, all those guys in the Justice League. I think they're all great, but my attention kind of goes towards "The Avengers" and "The New Avengers", "The Secret Avengers" and everything that they're doing now at Marvel I like."

Sorry dude. You were great in that commercial and that's it. Shit, you are even on tyler perry's upcoming shitfest so how can we take you serious? If you're on luke cage I can't watch it with a straight face.

I just love you are underestimating him. I mean the guy is passionate about it and he seems to know what he is talking about so give him a chance.

Cross alot of amazing actors have been in Tyler Perry movies so does that discredit their acting ability? I think not every actor likes to do a fun easy role from time to time.

I think he's a fine choice as long as he buffs up so that he is the same size as Luke Cage in the comics. I'm not going to make the mistake of judging someone before we see a performance.

Plus, keep in mind, he hasn't even gotten the role yet. He's just been discussing it. Some of you guys are acting like he did get cast and that it's the end of the world...

You do realise that he could get jacked out of his mind for this role right? Everyone said the same thing about Chris Evans and now he looks the role 100% in Captain America.

Mustafa has a decent build, but not quite the physique I think Cage should have and he doesn't have that hard look like MatioShack refers to below. Crews is just too cheeseball of an actor. Don't care for either of them for the role.

I agree. I think he's just (this is going to sound gay) too good looking for that role. Luke is hard. He's not a super model. I honestly like Terry Cruise better for the role. The Old Spice guy or Michael Jai White would be better for Black Panther.

Michael Jai White or Terry Crews. That is all.

But seriously, I dont think he fits the whole Luke Cage persona. I have not seem him act in anything else but the Old Spice commercials and I cant stand those. But I have to give him credit on his enthusiasmm for the role. The guy obviously knows his material and that is a rare quality for actors who do these comicbook films. If he does get the role he definetly needs to bulk up.

Terry Crews ain't a bad actor. He's got the perfect build, the perfect look, and the perfect voice for Luke Cage. Marvel would be dumb to cast anyone else in the role.
Hawksblueyes

Luke Cage is not Buff. He freaking big. Besides that, he is not Mr. Nice guy like this guy is. This dude couldn't look mean or intimidating if you placed an AK 47 in each hand. He just doesn't. Call it acting all you want but Pee Wee Herman could never pull off Clint Eastwood.

This dude as cool as he is, has buff arms Falcon Buff not Luke Cage huge. And he has Mr. Nice guy written all over him. He is not Luke Cage. I respect his enthusiasm and I like him but no thank you.

Forget about his acting, he just doesn't look very intimidating.

How about The Rock? I'd love to see him get one of these roles.

You guys do realize that it takes more than a set of biceps to inhabit a character right? It's why they didn't cast triple H as thor as I recall some posters suggesting. This guy is obviously passionate about the character,

I mean how many comments are there on these forums about actors not caring about performance and how it suffers as a result? I'd rather see someone who gets the character than a carbon copy.
SageMode
SageMode - 4/20/2011, 4:10 PM
Terry Crews DOES NOT look like Luke Cage. Just because he's a big bald-headed black dude thats appeared in movies, that doesnt mean hes the best pick for Luke.

I wish people would stop judging based on current looks and typecasts.

As far as him being scrawny, Chris Hemsworth was muscular but somewhat scrawny before Thor.

Heath Ledger was dogged for being cast as the Joker before DK came out......and look how that turned out. now Arguably the Best Joker ever.

Id say give him a chance people. and he seems to be pretty knowledgeable with comics also, which im sure Marvel would take into consideration.

if not him, then id say Henry Simmons for the role

I have to disagree with you here Sage. Luke Cage is not a pretty boy like this dude and a few others who have been mentioned for the part. He is big and bad and cool as all get out. I think Crews fits him to a T.
