You might think that there is some huge reveal to the recent trailer from NetherRealm Studios about their upcoming Mortal Kombat. The new game is set to be retelling the first three Mortal Kombat games after the thunder-god Raiden sends a message back to his former self. We will finally understand why Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Reptile all look similarly and why the undead Scorpion has it out for his blue counterpart. But actually, it's just because Sub-Zero killed Scorpion and his family.

This ninth game in the Mortal Kombat franchise is simply titled Mortal Kombat and will retell the story of the first three games. It will be played in a 2D style reminiscent of the earlier games but have updated 3D visuals. The game's fatalities are said to be the most gruesome yet, pushing the envelope as compared to previous titles.

Ed Boon of NetherRealm studios(one of the creators of the game franchise) said they are aiming for around 26 playable fighters in the finished game with about 50-60 fatalities total. So far the following fighters have been confirmed: Cyrax, Johnny Cage, Kitana, Kung Lao, Mileena, Nightwolf, Raiden, Reptile, Scorpion, Sektor, Shao Kahn and Sub-Zero.
