Crystal Dynamics' Global Brand Director Karl Stewart recently sat down with John Gaudiosi of The Hollywood Reporter to discuss the new Tomb Raider film that is set to be made by GK Films.
It appears that the new film will be based heavily on the new game that is set to be released next year. As a matter of fact it will be the exact story according to Stewart,"The intent, so far, is that we go back and tell the exact same story. Of course, what we tell in 10 hours is very different than what they will tell in a blockbuster movie of 90 minutes. There will be some truncating, and we’re very excited to see what comes out."
If the new game is well received, then that will be good news. If not, then it could potentially be a big mistake. Also, it appears that they are not very far along in the process of making the film, as the only talent announced so far has been the writing team of Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus(Children of Men, Iron Man, and Cowboys & Aliens). Stewart also points out that "We haven’t gotten as far as director or cast just yet. Everyone agrees that we need to make sure that we nail the story first," which seems to be a good sign that they want to get a good story before they film.
Personally, the stuff I have seen so far from the new game has not really impressed me. However, the writing team of Ostby and Fergus has me optimistic about the movie. They have written some very good films, so there is that hope.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you want a new movie? If so would you be okay with it being heavily based on the new game? Are you liking the new direction of the game? Sound off with your thoughts below.
