So yeah, we're getting a Tomb Raider movie from the director of A Field in England.

According to Deadline, a sequel to MGM's 2018 Tomb Raider reboot has been given a release date of March 19, 2021, and British filmmaker Ben Wheatley is set to take over from the first film's director Roar Uthaug.

Alicia Vikander has signed on to reprise the role of Lara Croft.

Wheatley is best known for disturbing/surreal movies such as Kill List and High Rise, but the director did take a step closer to more mainstream fare with recent action flick Free Fire. Still, it's very surprising to see him take the helm of a big franchise picture like Tomb Raider.

Production is expected to begin early next year on the sequel, with Amy Jump on board to pen the script. The movie will be produced by Graham King through his GK Films banner.

Never saw Tomb Raider, but this is such a weird choice to direct. Wheatley’s got a pretty distinct voice, I never expected him to jump onto a franchise, let alone one like this. Dunno how much creative leeway he’ll have

I'm excited for this news! I liked the first one and I really liked Free Fire so I think the director could do good work. Funny enough I literally looked Tomb Raider up last week to see if there was any movement on a sequel.

@suitekid - Right there with ya. I was a little worried they weren't going to move forward with a sequel because of the box office take. Awesome news!

Free fire is very underrated, I'm surprised they went with him as the director.
