VIDEO GAMES: Reboot Details And New Look For Lara Croft Revealed!

Square Enix have revealed the first details about a reboot of the hit Tomb Raider series (which has been adapted into comic books plenty of times!) and also the iconic characters sexy new look...

The game has been described as follows:

After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was traveling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive.

Here begins the first adventure for a young and inexperienced Lara Croft in a story which charts the journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive.

Darrell Gallagher, Head of Studio, Crystal Dynamics, had this to say:

"Forget everything you knew about 'Tomb Raider,' we are exploring things that have never been done before in this game. This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other."

Tomb Raider makes its worldwide debut in the January issue of Game Informer magazine. The cover story features 10 pages of exclusive content and is available beginning today for subscribers and on newsstands December 11.

LEE: Thanks bud! :) I've got to agree that this both looks and sounds great. I think this might just be the best direction for the franchise...the last few have been good, but the formats been getting a little stale IMO. (especially when compared to the superior Uncharted games!) And as much as I like Blunt as Croft, I have to say that Gemma Arterton is a PERFECT casting choice! She's a brilliant actress and would make an amazing Lara. Wicked idea dude!!!

JOSH @ Damn, if the franchise goes this way, they can't go far wrong bud!

You are 100% and hit the nail on the head... they have been a bit stale of late!

... An thanx man, hey wicked article, 'bout time they tried something new, kudos dude!

She will be in shape, and will probably have decent boobage (I don't really care about her boob size I just want to enjoy the game itself). I played Batman AA for the fun not to stare at Harley Quinn or Poison Ivy's nice asses lol. It's just a bonus. People saying that Lara has to have huge boobs is such a stupid thing to say. Let the game speak for itself, not some stupid gimmick like double Ds. Your maleness amazes me people lol.

That's funny that you mentioned Uncharted, JoshW. I said in a comment on 1UP that they should totally copy Naughty Dog's Uncharted gameplay and it'd do very well. While still being original in other aspects.

If they are aiming for a reboot.... they'd better return Lara to her tomb-spelunking roots. It's not Tomb Raider - origin story or not, boobs or not - if there isn't a Tomb to Raid.... hence the title. You might as well get rid of the Tomb Raider title and make it "Lara Croft: Origins" and put on a semi-pseudo Uncharted-type game copy out.... because if they are rebooting the franchise with a younger Lara Croft before she got the Tomb Raider moniker, then it only makes sense to get rid of the title rather than slap an old title onto the back of a new "animal" and still consider it part of the original franchise.

PS... I want the original Lara Croft's satchel... you know, the one backpack that holds just about EVERYTHING? :P

this is pretty cool, I like that they rebooted this franchise the original team never ran the stories as good as these guys do, Anniversary, Legend, and Underworld were some of the best Tomb raider games since the original. granted anniversary is a remake of the first but they improved it so well. I hope this still stays with the continuity they have established so far, I like the reboots story.

epic find @Josh! What issue is that?? I haven't received it yet.

I have never really been in to the tomb raider games but as I was reading this story line I got goosebumps. I would love too explore the origins and rise of this raiding babe!!

I really hope they make it extremely hard to survive. I hate games where they take scenarios that you know would be hell and make them so friggen easy.

@Leee777- Sorry buddy but I'm going to disagree with you about Gemma. She's hot as hell and I love her every minute she is on screen. But she doesn't have the chops for an action hero. You need a really bad ass bitch to be Lara Croft. And Gemma is too much of a girly girl. You need someone with balls (so to speak), someone like Angelina Jolie.... oh wait...
Osiris
Osiris - 12/6/2010, 6:53 PM
Gemma does look the part LEEE, but Solid not just a bad ass is needed, she needs to be athletic, like a gymnast/ martial artist, I say a nobody would be good, someone like Alison Carroll who motion captured for Lara in Underworld but acting skills will be required.

I'm sick off all reboots of everything.
I'm sure the game will be fantastic to play, but i don't see any reason in changing her origin and history just to make a new game.
There are still alot of artifacts and mytology for Tomb Raider to discover, and the devolopers on Crystal Dynamics made an suberb job in strengthen the mytology of Lara.
Bottomline you can add alot of story taken place in Lara's past, present or future. If they want this game to take place in her early years, sculpting her into the heroine we all know?, then fine with me, just make it take place in the Tomb Raider continuity. Don't erase everything else.
There is absolutly no need for a reboot of the whole history/franchise just.

Just make the game right.

Edit: I like the new design of Lara, but they can do that without rebooting the series.
Osiris
Osiris - 12/7/2010, 3:34 AM
agreed Kuffs, hopefully this is just more back story to the already established reboot, the only back story they did was about her parents they never show what happens between her Moms vanishing act and getting trapped in the dig site (flashback in Legends)

On the new look:
To me I see a little Jessica Alba, a little Adriana Lima and a little Kate Beckinsale with Riku's haircut...Carpenter is pretty, but not close enough to me.

On the new premise:
The "reinvention and origin" thing is fine with me so long as certain things about the character are either explained or the character is set up right for the future. If they do this right and set it up well then the players will embrace it. It would be nice to see them return to the tomb raiding too. They have been pushing her in interesting new angles since the creative team switch. I hope this trend continues.

Yeah if she was a HISPANIC-ISH looking chick in the Game Informer picture then she'd look like Charisma C.
Next you'll say it's Michelle Rodriguez...
