It's been a while since we've heard something official concerning the new Tomb Raider video game, which will reboot the successful action/adventure series and will focus on Lara Croft's origins. Yesterday, Darrell Gallagher (Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics, who is developing the game) revealed that the release date will be moved from fall 2012 to early next year. He says that the delay is "to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game." Below is the full statement:

When Crystal Dynamics first set out to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise, there were two goals that we were extremely passionate about. The first was to create a modern Tomb Raider game that would surprise and excite gamers. The second was to make this the best game of our careers, something we would be really proud to be a part of. We truly believe that we have something very special on our hands and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game. In order to do this, we have decided to move the game’s release date by a few months, from Fall 2012 to the first quarter of 2013.

We're doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. The game is looking amazing and we can't wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.

Additionally, a new screenshot from the game has been released:

Developed by Crystal Dynamic and published by Square Enix, Tomb Raider will be released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Mac OS X in the first quarter of next year.

Lara Croft series is old and bland by this point. Even if they try making it like Uncharted, not many people are interested in it anymore. She's a relic, much like what she hunts. Never was a huge fan, though clearly I can respect what the series did for the 3rd-person action/puzzle/platformer genre.

Never a good sign. But I'm hoping it's still a good game.

ModernAvenger89, how's this not a good sign? They're taking more time to develop a good game, when is that bad?

@SteveRogersSon- They aren't! She's going to have a more athletic build. Think Olivia Wilde who is actually my choice to play Lara if they do a new movie. This is a complete reboot of the franchise.

I will play this game, but someone associated with the making of this game had better realize that Ms. Croft's pair of polygons are sorely in need of an increase in surface area!!!!!

So no posing lara croft, becoming too serious.......

Someone remind me why this is called tomb raider again.

I'll pass on this since the series didn't need a reboot.

I'll stick to this type of look:

I heard they are going to make this more survivor type game. Lara is still unexperienced young girl.

Cant wait. Hopefully the make this extra time count and make it as good as possible. :)

Neutral ultimately.

I'm sure the game itself is good, but I've never really played the series (Only got Underworld due to special offer on PS+).

Still if it means a better game, I'm all for Crystal Dynamics doing what they have to.

Wow, that sucks. I was looking forward to checking it out this year.

At least, there is a lot of other games to check out.

@JillValenfield I know, right? This better be the best Tomb Raider game ever. :P

Other games I'm looking forward to: TASM, RE6, Halo 4, Lego Batman 2, and Max Payne 3.

@AlexDeLarge Nice, dude. IGN gave the game a 9/10. It should be a lot of fun.
